Alniseral, "Warvessels", Battleship community fortress
« on: December 31, 2009, 06:39:27 am »

They called me mad.

My name is Ms. Cog Shakenhatchet. Not too long ago, I submitted my grand idea to the king. My grand idea, a dwarven war machine that could cross oceans to wreak havoc on our enemies. I submitted plans for what I liked to call "Warvessels" or Alniseral in the dwarven tongue. The king laughed in my face, said it was impossible, said I was insane. "Metal plates, ballistae, 200 dwarves and the supplies needed for them? You think this will float?!" he laughed. Needless to say, I was dragged by my beard out of the king's quarters. But, I'll show them.

I've checked the maps. Here is the perfect location for my device, my battleship! There's water, magma, stone, wood and even a bottomless chasm cleft through the mountains! Someone told me that these mountains were terrifying. I don't think they could be that ugly.

So, I, Captain Cog, set out with six unfortunate fools dumb enough to follow me.

Okay, so I found a site and I was going to make a battleship. Suddenly I was hit with the urge to write, and I found that the Terrifying hills could be quite Fun! Just pick a dwarf, tell me what you want them named and how they would act, and a preferred job. Captain Cog is a mason/architect/mechanic with social skills. I still need a miner and woodcutter, if that's what you'd like.

Anywho, go ahead and pick! Make suggestions as to what I should do, etc. I haven't embarked yet, so initial supplies suggestions are open too.

If I don't get any new people within half an hour, I will embark with what I have. You can name/claim them afterwards. I need to be able to save it!

Oi, Dwarf me up.

I'll take over Lokum's brain, and play the part of the wily woodchopper. :3 Say maybe prone to bouts of delirium and insanity? Name him Yanish, give him the job of WILY WOODCHOPPER. As for the rest, I'll leave up to you!

I'll take Tekkud. Make him a happy go lucky mechanic and siege engineer.

 So...
The whole battleship will be built in that little creek? That can't be more than five tiles wide.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Silly Duke. We will instead flood the land AROUND the battleship! This is Dwarf Fortress. Why would it work any other way?

EDIT: Also, I'd like to see suggestions for the ship itself! I don't really have any specific design in mind and I'm not sure what I should make it look like. I only have story ideas at the moment. I do imagine it looking like a modern battleship, with ballista instead of cannons, maybe a big lead anchor on a thick steel chain...

Ill take one just to doom you from the start.

be sure to rename him.

Jervous Derm. Completely and maniacally paranoid as to the curse on his name.

mad eye moody paranoid.

as to the curse, anyone with the name has either been badly wounded or dead soon after arriving at a fort.

I'll be Spartan the hunter/crossbowdwarf/badass.

Captains Log - 17th of Obsidian.

Our journey has begun. I have rounded up the dwarves stupid/brave/insane enough to come with me to work on my masterpiece.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Two have yet to properly introduce themselves to me yet, but I'm sure I'll learnt their names in time.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I also prepared a list of what I needed for my journey. I spent the last of my savings on it. Goodbye, economy! Hello, living in the middle of nowhere!

Captains log - 25th of Obsidian.
Yanish Roofwhiskers was having a shouting match with an empty barrel that Derm had the misfortune of hiding behind. It took all my skill to pacify the crazed axedwarf. Derm is saved, for now.

Shebi has been quietly urging the animals ahead the whole ride. She's very vigilant, and hardly said a word the whole trip. Jervous has spent the entire trip trying to talk to Shebi about his mechanics and siege works. The girl just keeps on leading the wagon.

Spartan complained that I didn't give him a crossbow. I told him we'd make one there. He told me that it wasn't fair. I told him that he should take it up with my bank account. He was quiet then.

Captains log - 1st of Granite, 22. Early Spring.

On the first day of spring our wagon lurched to a halt. For once, Shebi spoke. "We're here." she told me in an eloquent tone. With a grin I hopped off the wagon and began deliberating orders. We were to dig in first and make ourselves temporary residences before we got to work on my ship!

And there we go! We've embarked. I've still got one more dwarf up for grabs!

And sorry, Spartan! We already embarked >w<" I'll make sure to give you a dwarf, but we have two females. A crafter, and a miner. We can cross-train them, if you like.
