How do I hear things in my head?
« on: December 31, 2009, 02:42:15 am »

When you think, you talk in your head. When I type this sentence I talk in my head.

How do I hear what I say in my head? Can it be called talking if I am not actually talking? I'm imagining what I'm saying and I understand and comprehend it, but how do I hear what I imagine?

(Yes i've tried googling this.)

I would imagine that what you are hearing is your brain, upon understanding your ideas puts it into words, reciting them in your head .

You're telling your vocal cords to move to the words.

I've often wondered this and I came up with this explanation:

When we 'hear' sound, the sound itself does not actually carry and recognizable form, it's just highyly focused air pressure. Our brains receive that stimuli through the ear drum and then proceeds to interpret the 'sound' with a series of electrical signal patterns across our brains. This puts us under the illusion of 'hearing' the sound.

When we consciously think of words, music, etc., what we're really doing is telling our brain to recreate the electrical signal patterns it came up with from the original stimuli. When it does so, we fall under the illusion that we are 'hearing' the sound from an external stimuli. The quality of a persons memory also affect the quality of the sound 'heard'

This can also happen subconsciously like with schizophrenia or more commonly with dreams.

But this isn't very dwarvenly. So i'll lay it down cold- The reason you can hear voices in your head is because you aren't drinking enough. Or maybe it's too much; But that would be heresy now wouldn't it?  8)

How do I hear what I say in my head?

The same way you imagine anything? I'm not sure I understand the question.

You just typed that sentence. When you typed it did you say it aloud? Or did you say it in your mind?

The latter. I don't generally speak what I'm typing or reading aloud; I'm not sure many people do.

If I said everything out loud that I typed on the internet, my voice would sound like gravel by the end of the day.

Well there you go. You just heard yourself in your head. And I asked how is it possible to hear myself talking in my head if I am imagining it.

The firing of synapses in your brain. Further than that I'd bet we simply do not know.

I don't know what you're asking. You hear yourself talking in your head BECAUSE you're imagining it. They're the same thing. You're forming words in your head and simulating what they sound like, as part of the normal linguistic process.

You can imagine images, smells, and other sensations in your head too; you should try it sometime, it's fun!

I don't speak what I'm reading but if I'm typing I have to say it or I usually end up with horrible grammar.

Good question. I think it depends. Language is something made by humans. If they don't speak a language the answer is no. But they can still hear noises and make noises in their head like we can.

A mute person can still think in their heads. Whether or not it means anything.

If they don't speak a language the answer is no.

[...]

A mute person can still think in their heads.

These statements appear contradictory.

A person who doesn't know any higher language will still certainly think to themselves, but it probably won't be terribly organized/structured or easy to form into memories.
