What are the ":O" looking characters represent?

Looks great, except a lot of the symbols are confusing. :)

Rocks. In game I'll have a feature to see what items are. But I just chose a round object for rocks.

Hmm... you really have all the easy stuff present.
It would take a pretty ugly rewrite to add more conventional stuff in.

Maybe give the enemy NPC some sort of health variable,
 and basic AI so he can flee instead of running around like a Skittle.

You can call this "Murder Game" until more features are added.
