Having RAM
« on: December 30, 2009, 05:34:22 pm »

If I have less than the minimum amount of RAM, what does this mean for game preformance? Can I not play the game at all?

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

It depends on the game. Generally they'll start, but they'll be forced to page to disk (using your hard disk as storage for stuff being lightly used) and as such will suffer drastically reduced performance.

How drastic?
Also, does anybody know where you can buy DDR ram nowadays?

I may need to get some RAM for my computer.

It currently uses 1GB of Page File memory all the time. More when playing games etc.

so... Kinda slow.

Ah, I see, DDR proper.  You'll probably have to go online for that.  Try TigerDirect.

Check NewEgg too; their prices tend to be similar, and while TigerDirect's gotten much better over the years their return policy in case of failure is still a serious pain in the ass.

Ok, thanks. I've bookmarked a page or two for future reference. But, What are the issues I have with not having enough ram?

Basically, RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It sits in a PC hanging around doing jobs that need to be done. It stores information that needs to be readily available to run a program, such as a computer game. This computer game will have been designed to use up a certain amount of RAM to run itself the way it was meant to, so say you had 2GB worth of ram for a game that needed 1GB you'd be sorted. Your game would use up 1GB and be happy. But say you only had a 512MB of ram for that 1GB game, your game wouldn't have enough space to put all its junk that needs to be readily available... So this memory deficeit moves onto your page file, which is basically using your harddrive as RAM. Buuuuut, this is extremely taxing on the system and really really inefficient...

Feel free to correct me as I have no idea how this works...

What I know is, a lot of games won't even run if you don't have the minimum RAM, they'll just give you a message saying so.  Short of that, one effect I remember is game assets being missed or improperly loaded, like broken scripts and game areas full of invisible objects.  Have fun trying though.

I am waiting for RAM to come all up in here and post something.

...

So OP do you know how many RAM slots you have in your computer? A better RAM chip is more expensive (2x better is more than 2x cost). But if you're already full you can't just add a new one.

Anyone have issues with compatibility if you have two RAM chips from different companies at the same time?

most stores that sell ram have ddr  and ddr2, rarely do I find a store with ddr3. Even best buy does not keep it in stock. I know at least 3 walmarts that have ddr and ddr2 for desktops and laptops in stock as well.

rarely do I find a store with ddr3.
Well, considering that it's by far the most expensive, not to mention the newest, that's not surprising.
DDR is expensive because it's now sorely outdated.
DDR2 is the cheapest now because it's mainstream.

8GB of DDR3 here.
I don't foresee any shortages of RAM.
