Is DF a communist game?

Think about the economy, almost everything can be used by everyone, and the only person who has any money manages all of the trading!

It's not really a game, It's a brain-washing device made to eventually transorm a large percentage of the world population into stark raving mad commies.....

Pre-economy DF is fairly communistic in the literal, ideal sense of the term.

There's no money used, and people work to provide for themselves and the community and, in exchange, get whatever they need.

Maybe, its hard to say Dwarves do have property however it can always be repossessed in the name of the greater good, I think its up to how you play it, I treat my my masons and minors nicer then the rest and give them large engraved rooms and offices. I hate my fisherdwarfs and build seige firing ranges  that overlap with there fishing grounds

Why the hell are you doing this?! Those dwarves are most likely the bravest guys in your fort. They have to be, because they go that close to water.

Once you hit the economy the communism largely goes away - people have demands to be happy and if you don't satisfy them they may revolt.

And then economy DF is fairly communistic in the worst, steriotypical sense of the word.

People all get told what to do and the bottem class (haulers) work endlessly for little gain, if dwarfs step out of line (or the leader is just bored) they get put in prison or killed, war against hippies (elves), conscription.

Most city/empire management games tend toward 'Communism' because it gives the players something to DO.  I only ever recall one game that tried to go against this principle it was called Majesty in which the player interacts with units by offering rewards for task completion, the units have free-will and judge risk and rewards.  Another factor to consider is that strategy games in general evolved from boardgames which necessitate all decisions being made by players.

Civilisation 4 did that. Even though there were different goverment systems, even when you chose Democrocy you could never be voted out.

I like Majesty.

It's hard to match a political ideology to a game. Particularly where the player is in the position of an all-powerful overseer.

Dwarf Fortress depicts a command economy, but insofar as you read a political message into it at all, the game itself is profoundly pro-freedom by showing just how unworkable a command economy actually is in any but the smallest, simplest society.

And you murder the nobles in the truest Bolshevik fashion, only with magma.

Holy cow, it all makes sense.

DF is communist at first. From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.

But then once the nobles start showing up and the "economy" kicks in, things turn Soviet.

Hammerings and prison sentences for everyone!   >:(

In real life, communistic type societies break down at around 150-200 people, tops.

Below that amount everyone knows everyone else, and so people are honest and hard working. Everyone is happy.

The problems kick in when you get a very large number of people. Communism simply does not work with large populations because human greed, laziness, and selfishness ruin everything. When you no longer know the person you are harming due to your own actions, you care a lot less about harming them casually.

Ever leave garbage behind in a public place?

You're casually harming the janitors, who you do not know personally, but they have to nonetheless clean up your mess for you, and the messes usually end up being horrific things after having been left there for hours upon hours.
