Combat Suggestion
« on: October 15, 2007, 10:43:00 pm »

I don't know if this has already been said, but having like a kind of 3-D view available for combat would be awsome, where you can like see the guys fighting and stuff... I didn't see anyhting in the bloats, so yeah.

The next release has windows in which you can see the z-levels above and below you.  Check out the adventure mode movie in the Future of the Fortress 2 thread.  Is that what you mean?

Actual 3D renders aren't planned for this game, as far as I know. That kind of thing was in the first Slaves to Armok, but it slowed down development too much. This one is sticking to tile-based graphics to focus on gameplay and other areas.

The arguments for and against 3D hardware-accelerated 5-million-poly renders and suchlike have been said elsewhere on the forums.

Ooo.  it might be kind of neat if there were optional combat cutscenes like in Feda: Emblem of Justice (and uh...probably most of the top-down tactical games on the Sega and SNES, back before Final Fantasy Tactics).

Where you say "Soldier B, go hit Archer C" and you get a silly anime style cutscene where soldier B swings his sword on one half of the screen, and then archer C falls over on the other half of the screen.

I can't imagine a bigger waste of programming / artistic time, but...hey, it would be fun!

(And totally impossible to do wrestling in!)

((And even MORE impossible to change the combat messages or mechanics later, or to add nifty very rare occurrances, which is why nobody does graphics in roguelikes!))

(((And how would you display some of those horrifying critical hits, anyway?)))

Huh... good points.

Wait... now I remember why I hated most RTSes...
those annoying combat cutscenes....

anyone ever played Fire Emblem?

If you haven't, don't.

( Yes, the attacks do sorta look cool, but imagine that over... and over... and over... the entire 50 hour long game... and over... )

Fire Emblem is a turn based strategy game not a real time strategy game.

In a way, Dwarf Fortress mode is niether, since nearly every combat descison is detirmend by the AI,

It more like... AI based... or something. While players do have some control over where the dwarf squad goes, its not guaranteed the Squad won't cancel to go eat food, or go to the wrong postition... and all of the "attack" decisons are made based off AI. (i.e., will I attack THIS sasquatch, or THAT gopher?)

The most control players have is mostly where their Dwarf Squads start, how many Dwarves are dedicated to Squads, And what they arm themselves with.

Now adveture mode, is arguably, completly turn based.
You can either move, or act in one turn.

Come on, you know it is basicaly turn based.

And you said Fire Emblem was real time, which is what I was correcting.

I'd say Dwarf Fortress is a 4x game. Or a sim game. I and my friends call it SimDwarf internally, because it's easier to pronounce.

I wouldn't call it a 4X game just yet, since you can't really explore or expand in any meaningful way on the world map (that is, you can't find and claim new lands for your civ). And it's not possible to exterminate anyone yet. 4X games usually have a grander scale than just one outpost. However, with the Armies arc it'll certainly be heading in that direction.

It definetly is a management sim. Though I'd rather call it just DF than SimDwarf.  :p

Yes... it is a 4x game.
However, clearly stated in the first three lines...

" A 4x Game can be eiter Turn-Based, or Real-Time... "

so yeah.

Still turn based.

Hehe mickel, "SimDwarf" is what I also thought when I first played DF. It felt, to me at least, like an enhanced version of SimAnt, substituting ants for dwarves.
