Take some of the used wood and turn it into charcoal, then form that carbon into Diamonds (wiki artificial diamonds)

umm, used wood? do you mean the gears? Not sure we have any other wood items avaliable yet.

Pencils could be made with erasers at both ends, but what would be the point?

I will gather again.
attempt: 100 0.0 +20
quality: 66, 1 :o
quantity: 11-66=1, 98-1=97
Walking around the cove, you stop next to a very large palm tree, thinking that a good influx of wood would(no pun intended) make for good materials, you carefully scoop the tree out of the ground and bring it back to the ship whole. However on the way back to the ship, you notice a slight shimmer in the sky to the north, and the Dragon in the cove shifts and wakes up quickly, a man who was sleeping on the other side seems to talk to the large creature and hops up to it's back and with a massive outflux of air it takes off into the sky. A few more moments and the silver shower is upon you, gouts of flame appear higher up in the sky, torching the thread like raindrops before they get close to land. A single strand manages to slip past them and hits the brush nearby. You watch in horror as the silver thread instantly consumes the plantlife around it, growing into a squirming mass of silver worms. Thinking quickly you contain the creatures in a globe of your powers, just barely containing the mass as they grow at such a massive rate, and lowering the temperature inside your bubble you throw it all into stasis and decide to bring the mass back with you before the dragons above fly down to check what they may have missed.

quality: 37
quantity: 48-37=11
You decide to swim down under the water during the threadfall, and find fish everywhere waiting the feast that is drowned threads. Further down strange looking shells with some type of squid relative squirting it along from the opening catches your eye. Grabbing up several of them, you haul your catch back up to the ship.

Well, as intended, I'll give the gears over to group storage.

However, I have(improvised) plans for the "scrap".

I'll combine the bark into a small bowl, and fill it with the sawdust, after breaking the sawdust down further into a very fine dust. I don't really have a plan for it, but maybe someone else can use it? I'll just have to wait and see the results.
attempt: 100 +20 (ok time to check the roller:

Ok, I guess it's working, you people are crazy lucky though.
quality: 80
base influence: 58+80+28(materials)=166
Putting the gears into group storage, you turn to the shavings and leftovers from your work yesterday. Skillfully weaving the bark into a basket like bowl, you squeeze just enough to seal the whole item into a solid wooden container. Meanwhile, in the other hand you crush your sawdust into a very fine particle sand and fill the bowl with it. On a whim, you use a finger wrapped in pointed power to carve intricate swirls around the outside edge of the bowl.

Take some of the used wood and turn it into charcoal, then form that carbon into Diamonds (wiki artificial diamonds)
attempt: 22+20=42
You claim one of the three wooden gears from the stockpile, and ignite it using your powers. After a careful burn, the charcoal that remains goes into a compression cycle. Or at least that is how it is supposed to go. It takes a great deal of energy to create fire from nothing, and you find yourself in need of a rest before you even manage to make a viable flame. Perhaps you are going about this the wrong way?

The tough old bird is really crafty. And try as you might, you can't seem to kill the darned thing. After much struggling, you give up, and allow the fat bugger to live another day.

Holding your hand just so, a blade of glowing light shoots from your fingertips. Like a jedi's lightsaber your power slices through fish like a hot knife through... well fish. Scales and bones and guts fly everywhere. In the end you hold a large heaping helping of fillet o fish. Fully cleaned, and sushi grade fresh.

As the day ends, a massive rumble starts in the back of the ship and the portal to the world closes. After a few more moments the swirl of color and nothingness takes over the viewport, as the ship lurches to it's next location:

Once again, I don't need what I made and put it in the group pile.

Due to the relative lack of decent resources, I shall gather, and only because it is the first day of a waorld and a failure is tolerable.

I don't think they did, but did the pern books ever get around to investigating what the thread actually was? From what I remember, all the interesting sci-fi parts were trashed after the first book, and the meteor was forgotten.

I believe the book that has more detailed info on the threads was 'All the Wyers of Pern' Where they find the supercomputer and return to the spaceships and all that jaz.

And nope, this isn't Wonderland. No real target world this time around, a random one from the depths of my mind. :)
