Anyone else feel a bit guilty when you kill humans?
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:14:10 pm »

Have you ever had a human besiege your fortress only to get shot down by your dwarven crossbow-machinegun, captured in cages to be used to feed the Bronze Collosus, and meet a splattery end to your champion hammerdwarves? I'm sure most of you have.

Have you ever felt the slightest bit of guilt when you kill 'em, though? I mean, they're HUMANS. They're US in real life. Of course, you have no remorse or scruples when you torture the goblins and elves, but the humans... It just feels mean. I look forward to the peace treaty, so we can stop this bloodshed. Humans don't deserve to die.

(Just checked the legends, this human civ doesn't have a violent past with any other civilization besides a couple of elves for a few years)

They're not us. They're the people that look at us crossways for spending too much time playing DF. Next time your mom gets on you for spending too much time playing games, just remember that she'll be leading up the next siege against your fortress.

It's too bad I don't see my mom on a daily basis, I live with my brother approximately 100 miles away from her. However, maybe my brother telling me to stop leaving the water on so long because the bills will go up and bitching about me using too much electricity qualifies.

Sounds like someone haven't been dwarfin' enough.
I suggest making a drop trap, as in dropping kittens on the invaders, to make that bad feeling go away.

I don't feel bad when I'm killing humans. We're doing it in many other games, too. Right?

On the other hand, I do feel bad when I kill elves.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Considering that orcs in my game have [DAMBLOCK:8] and [SIZE:15], I figure I'm be doing humans a favor whenever I use them to decorate my yard.

Have you considered modding humans to make them tougher? I, for one have seen the human survivability quotient skyrocket when I added [BODY:BEARD] to their list of body parts.

I don't tend to wage war with the humans much on the principle that their caravans usually hold lots of steel goodies to melt down (and my map has no flux). However, the few times they -have- sent sieges my way, I actually enjoyed watching two dozen marksdwarves cut their squads down even more than goblins since humans are tougher opponents.

...I think Dwarf Fortress has edited my raws and removed the [SOUL] tag...

Speaking of which, how is fire in the new version?
out of personal experience, where a dwarf was set alight by a magmaman, ran up 150 flights of stairs, and divebombed into the booze stockpile, I'd have to say fire is the same as always.

Now wouldn't it just be awesome to wage war against other Dwarven civilizations?

No, I do not feel guilty about killing humans in DF.  I will go to extremes to save a cat, however.   :D

I think dwarves are better at being human then humans are sometimes, when I start working on my upper division I might even write a paper about it

Absolutely correct. You goblins DO NOT kill that cat!
That's my job, after all.

Guilty about killing humans? Hah! When I play DF, I kill all my enemies in effigy.

I've done that precisely once. One of my fortresses had nearly destroyed itself in a tantrum spiral after a massive goblin raid. Only two survived. One, one of my founding champion dwarves, a former bookkeeper turned legendary wrestler/armor/shield/hammer user. And two, the dungeon keeper. The caravan came and along with them came some goblins. Well my champion killed the goblins and somehow killed the Outpost Liaison. This caused him to be named an enemy of his own civ. The next year they sent a siege force. This was mostly pointless as by that point the food stocks had run out and the two dwarves were starving to death.
