Favoured character names.
« on: December 29, 2009, 05:14:02 pm »

I'm pretty sure everyone has a bunch of names that they prefer to give to characters in games.

Fantasy-wise, I am normally a variant on Maggarg, like the chaotic evil sorceror, Maggarg the Entropic. As a player of DF, I also have a few characters called Astesh.

In Sci-Fi I have characters with super-manly names, like Hank Steele or Ray Locke.

I'm too much an immersion gamer. If possible, I'll try to inject myself into a game (name and image). Force of habit.

I'm apparently not much for using an alias in games aside something that would make it known it's me.

I suppose gimmick names whenever appropriate also works. Like General Eric Guy (Gen. Eric Guy) or something else.

I just prefer certain names based on my preference for certain classes. Maggarg sounds warrior-y to me.

Zai (Kazun, typically, when last name's required) is what I almost always put in for main characters. Everybody else is either default or whatever I feel like naming them at the moment I have to name them.

MMORPGs it's Muffles, or sometimes Wuffles if Muffles is taken.  Most other games it's my real name.  Redguards in Elder Scrolls are Cyrus.

I used to call all my characters mario after super mario and all my pokemon (type)man. Now I just call everyone normal peoples names like Tony or Jack even if its an animal or Im playing a fantasy game.

Either that or I call them Fisku or Onion.

Typically the name is the last thing I think of, and they tend not to be very memorable.

Bjorn Darkwyn was a ranger i played in a PBEM, he died rapidly to a skeletal dragon. It was memorable because he died trying to hold the beast off so that the rest of the party fled. They decided not to flee, defeated the thing and had to drag my corpse and 3 unconscious characters out of the dungeon. IIRC the survivors had 3 hp between the two of them. It was ok though, his stats were to high compared to the other characters, the con hit from being resurrected helped bring him back into balance with the party.

Kai (I dont recall the last name) was a "pseudo-asian" fat, bald, middle aged ninja|swordsage gestalt werewolf with the astrologically destined powers of breathing underwater, scrying, bless water and the ability to talk with plants. Don't ask, it was a very over the top campaign with some ridiculously over powered feats with unique abilities based on when your character was born (and that was determined randomly). Was infected with lycanthopy in game, and unable to get a cure in time. Kai was tasked with saving the world and failed, did a bit of time travel participated in the death of a few gods, and somehow retained both his status as royal assassin and an alignment of Lawful Good at the same time. He was also one of the least powerful members of that party.

Justin Case makes a good backup character name.

Gerard Thibedeaux has a nice ring to it, though I have never used it.

Nothing in particular, but I like names that start with R S or J.

Big McLargehuge is always a good name. In fact anything from the "Space Mutiny" episode of MST3K is a good name. Slam Squat-thrust, for instance.

I admit that I'm not wacky enough to use "out of setting" names.  I try to use stuff that works within the game instead of just something funny.  My best joking name was for City of Heroes, an 80's Rock-themed cyborg superhero named Herr Mettal.  Pity I couldn't use umlauts.

Back when I played D&D I could come up with appropriately crappy fantasy names for every new character, but they sounded kinda samey.  Not having played a lot of games where names are important (and there's no generator available) I don't really have standards.  I used to just use my real name, but that felt a little too familiar.

Nowadays though, I just use Aqizzar for everything, since it's distinctive and pretty much universal.

I tend to use names based on Croatian words. In Lords of Creation, my god Velik Broj is Croatian for "Swarm".

Other than that, I use names based on the setting/race. For DnD, I use Celtic names for Elves, Russian or Nordic names for Dwarves, french or English names for humans, funny names for Halflings, Spanish names for Gnomes, and monosyllabic names for trolls.

Elf: Rannas

Dwarf: Viktor

Human: Benoit

Halfling: Eddy

Gnome: Gomez

Troll: Tog

Wouldn't "swarm" be "roj" :P

Anyway, in Haven&Hearth I have a nice bloodline thingy going on, the characters in it were named:
1. Goran Starodub
2. Ognjen Goranov
3. Davor Ognjenov
I'm sure you see the pattern.

As for D&D, I tend to go with the setting. But I do like French-sounding names for knightly characters.

I usually just name things with Paranormal meaning.
Like Ghost or Phantom.

If I run out, I just name them things like Guardian, Knight, Defender, and so on.
