Alternative: Rope ladders / Knotted ropes. They could be "built" on any floor/ground tile bordering any vertical drop, and allow access up & down that drop (in cases where there are drops in 2 or more directions, the game gives a "wadx" prompt to ask in which direction the rope should hang). This is better than existing climbing because a) it allows climbing up/down surfaces too sheer to climb, b) it allows faster movement than climbing, and c) it can also function as a lifesaving restraint. By assigning a dwarf to the other end of the rope (which might be done automatically), it doubles as a safety harness, so that if somebody deconstructs the floor that the dwarf is standing on, or Toady implements a random chance of accidents in the workplace, the rope will slow the dwarf's fall, and stop it completely just before the bottom (or 10 z-levels, whichever comes first).

That was a spam post necro, but regardless, add your vote to mine for Ropes in the Eternal Voting if you feel strongly about this.

ropes and ladders would have huge potential to enhance adventure mode as well

one example is using a ladder to sneak through the upper-floor windows of towers or dark fortresses (if they had windows)

ropes would be super helpful in exploring underground as well and would allow realistic spelunking to take place, not only would they allow the adventurer the usefull ability to descend in areas where there are no handholds but if they could be tied in place and left there then it would allow an adventurer to leave a bread-crumb trail of ropes to follow back up on the way out
