The Dentist
« on: December 28, 2009, 10:47:01 pm »

Does anyone else hate the Dentist with a passion? Aside from my fear of anything medical, the dentist always seems to find something to bitch and moan at, I mean I know my teeth suck but come on! About 2 times ago, I threw up all over the place when I was getting the X-rays lol. Medical stuff makes me feel like my stomach is going to explode and makes me nervous. Thank god that they replaced the metal scrapper thingys with this sonic water pluse thingy. Makes it less painful (those metal things were painful!), and a little less bad. But still, the dentist sucks balls.

Edit: I have a dentist appointment tomorrow at 10A.M.  :-[

There is no reason it be afraid of X-Rays.

They will only fuck you up if you are infront of them all the time.

Or you are just REALLY unlucky.

Also dentistry isent a scam, eye doctors are a scam.

I used to hate going to the dentist, until I finally convinced my parents that I had a really crappy dentist and they agreed.  Not coincidentally I've had to get a lot of work done over the past few years, and the guy I went to actually knew was he was doing.  He didn't try to humor me and he actually had a soft touch, unlike most dentists who think they need to talk the whole time and seem to grab around mouths like they're made of rubber.

Last week I went to a different guy to get a crown cemented back on, and while he did good work and didn't irritate me, he was kind of a dick.  He didn't talk much at all and was pretty rough, the kind of guy who expects his patients to be as blase about the work as he is.  Like stabbing that scraper thing into my exposed post so hard I thought he was trying to pierce through it.  It didn't actually hurt, but when I reacted to it he obviously thought I was a pussy.

Then after he cemented the crown on, he had to clean off the excess.  By shoving floss in between the crowns hard enough to make my gums bleed.  Then pull the floss out hard enough to yank the crown back off.  What's better than feeling something let go and being told to bite down on a cloth?  Being told all that with a voice that suggests its your fault.  And he wonders why I don't floss, because I don't want to rip the rest of them off.

So he comes back ten minutes later to try again, this time using a different, entirely successful cementing technique, begging the question of why he didn't use that method in the first place, but whatever.  So he did reasonably good work, in that the work is done with no lasting problems, but I'm not going to him again.

Wait until you can't eat solid food or drink anything but lukewarm liquid and tell me that again.

The X-rays are not so bad, but they triggered some junk from my stomach to come up once lol. I just hate getting my teeth cleaned, call me a Pansie, and pussy, whatever but it hurts for me because of my crappy gums.

My gums are really good becuase I always end up cutting them up and it made them really resistant.
You just need to put them through more to make them stronger.

My dentist is reasonably nice, even if she likes to remind me to floss and use mouthwash every time I visit, sometimes mentioning specific tailored brands suited to whatever problem I have at the time. Too acidic diet, that sort of thing.

However this might be because of the large amount of money she has probable earned from all my various work.
Mostly cricket injuries, as I refuse to wear a helmet. I could wear a gum shield, but that's also really uncomfortable. Less so than metal teeth however...

On chairside manner, my dentist is quite good, if a little talkative at times. She does tell me exactly what's going on, which is nice, and has a decent sense of humor. It's hard to answer questions with a numb mouth however, but I get the sense that most of those are to try and get my mind of the fact that a large drill and several dangerous pieces of metal are being inserted into my mouth.

Your eyes need much less attention than dentistry, for the most part of your life anyhow. Towards the later years you may need a bit more work, but most insurance companies tend to highlight their dental-care program before their eye-care one.

True, I don't count it as a good clean unless my gums are bleeding afterwards. It only actually hurts if mouthwash containing alcohol is used directly afterwards. Which it is. A little pain is good for the body and mind, and better through gums (brushing) than the face (shaving).

What is that supposed to mean?  Of course you only need to see an eye doctor if you have actual eye problems, and then not very often.  I want to know why that makes them a "scam".  They're specialists, of course you only see them occasionally.  However-

I would be glad to explain it to you, but not here. ;D

I should have known that statement was just more of cow trying to gin up pointless self-aggrandizing arguments, so consider the matter closed anyway.

I'm fine with the dentist, mostly. Of course, I have a good dentist. And he's been my dentist my whole life. I still have a couple little problems with the dentist, but nothing anywhere near serious and the first two really only apply to the nurses (I don't know about other dentists, but mine has like five nurses that do most of the pre-checkup cleaning and shit before he comes in for about five minutes. Speeds things up while allowing him to have multiple patients, I guess).

The worst part is the electric toothbrush. In case some of you have something different, I'll describe it. It's like a toothbrush, but replace the head with a rapidly rotating cylinder of some material like firm rubber or something (I've never examined it closely, to be honest). It just feels really damn weird on my teeth. Sometimes I get really nervous just thinking about the feeling, but then it ends up being a tenth as bad as I expect it.

Oh, and the flossing. They're rough as fuck with that. I'd rather they watch me as I flossed and told me how to do it right, because then I wouldn't end up with what seems like a mouthful of blood.

Also, new to the last time I went (like two weeks ago), the dentist scraped his sharp hook thing between my bottom front teeth really hard, which hurt for a second but wasn't that bad.

But all these are minor problems, really, and don't last less than fifteen minutes after the semiannual checkup, so it's all really not bad.

Rubber head on the electric toothbrush? sounds barbaric.
The one used by my dentist is the same as a normal toothbrush, except with the rotating thing, and it blasts in a strawberry tasting toothpaste stuff. Feels wierd in a good way, and my teeth feel all...clean...afterwards. Also somewhat shiny, but that may be my imagination.

I probably don't know what I'm talking about, if that would cause pain or anything. Honestly, it's just a weird feeling. It doesn't even really damage the gums if it hits them.
