The Ideal Bay12 Forum Post
« on: December 28, 2009, 02:23:57 am »

In the DF Modding section of the forum, there is a Raw Travesties thread that puts all the raws through an algorithmic text interpreter and generator to creates something not entirely unlike a raw file, given the proper text.

I've decided to do the same, except with ten pages of Recent Posts on this forum, from basically every single sub forum, to create The Ideal Bay12 Forum Post, or more accurately, a batch of them.

Unsurprisingly perhaps, the first ideal post has something to do with Space Marines and VASSAL, but I'm not entirely sure what.

To quote the site itself.
Quote
Suppose we're doing an order 3 travesty. Travesty analyzes the original text to find all the combinations of two characters (one less than the order) that appear in the text. It also constructs a table of all of the letters that follow those two-letter combinations and how often those letters follow the combination. Travesty then takes the first two letters of the original text, looks up that character sequence in the table, and randomly selects the next letter according to the frequencies in the entry. It adds the new letter to the beginning string of two characters and uses the second and third characters in that string as the new two-letter combination to look up. This process continues until Travesty produces the requested number of characters of output.

For example, when I put in chat logs of me and a female friend of mine the other day, the generated output consisted of almost nothing but her user name followed by either 'XD' or 'Oh gosh.' So yeah, pretty accurate representation, actually.

"No amount of groping will set her on fire" - Now I just need to know if that's a travesty or a complete line from some post.

And hey, I recognize something of mine in there.

I have compiled a Ideal Aqizzar Post, compiled from a random sampling of his posts, including the first one he ever made.

Modified to read easier.

Given your writing style, typified by very long posts with complex sentence structure, when you're posting something serious, perhaps I should shift up to the highest fidelity, (order 9, that is sequences of 8 characters at a time rather than 4 or 5), and generate something very long. I'll break it into paragraphs for readability, if you can call it that.

Quote
As a new guy, it behooves me to say that reading posts and playing three simultaneous forts. It's affected my thinking. About a week ago I had an early morning waking dream where I was playing a lot recently. Kind of inspiring really. In regards to moving water up Z-levels, if the whole thing a future recounting of past events would be quicker the let a mountain form and carve it down. And good old biological improbability. Thinking trees, fine, cool. How about: why are the Na'vi were so deep in the Uncanny Valley it's hard to take them seriously, especially are so similar it defeats the purpose.

Dats runty works. Orks don wurshop no bighed demons, an weez prop'r mean and grean. Seege'z in yeer too!

Oh god, 'stealers in the well. EDIT/BUG REPORT: Adventure mode is painstaking. If nothing like a leader before switching to crossbow (and a hammmer at the same four-arms-and-eyes morphology? Yeah, the visuals are top notch, even if I wasn't I've got nowhere near as well. Man this games rules. I haven't seen it to know how science that modern chemists and metallurgists don't. Boeing and NASA know more about Earth politics in Avatar, with a lower center of mass, and big thick hands that can carve stone without tools, could probably atrociously hammy acting by Alien Princess.

It'd be awesome to watch on acid when you told him to change equipment, but the liaison sadly informed me none was to be had. They in turn asked for rock scepters, goblets, and blocks of all things. Surely the Mountainhomes have no personality tags, and their quarters. Do they only burn up break time while idling at a location, or does the program expect that from all games. Now the question of whether only vermin-type creatures can still be fished, like Teddy Roosevelt. Everybody talks about how awful that game was.

I'll bet I'm only person here who's ever actually in the meeting hall, and put an arrow through their amazing WorkerDrone get so balls trippin' that he warps space and time, igniting friend and foe alike. If you have to explain why the Hell do you keep saying it? What is it? I assume it alters the actions of megabeasts to make a platforming-shooter tie-in that was among the lamest attempts at a serious movie I've ever see them except on coastal human artwork.

That's what you call a 'story angle' and it must be expanded on. Well, I know what I'll be making crabs, and in the Dwarf

A human caravan from Gil Cish have arrived, along with a weapon, taking potshots at the Battle of Lashes, where she stood alone in elven territory. And the Cameron was supposed to do battle on, like, Monday. Last Monday that is. I couldn't find good information on the way in between humans attacted by at least tip over from wind resistance. Oh, and thanks for no discernible reason. I guess so words would be less jarring. Substantively, well... Hooray for the almighty Toad.

-This has probably make those too. I'd love to throw in some other outre sea creatures as opposed to do battle on, like, Monday. Last Monday that is. I couldn't find good information on the wiki about what speed does affect so... Does a dwarf's agility level, and hence speed, have any effect on how long it takes them to sleep, eat, or drink? I've never really noticed, but I just blew through a four day vacation and I'm not going to update the save is here. Got a good movie out of Sergeant Slaughter, Sigourney Weaver getting good, the bipolar plot jumps in with more slo-mo and singing children. Altogether I'm glad I saw it so I can stop talking about? That would do that.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the tag is, but I've deputized some help and built a proper jail. So far, there's really ought to breath fire. No demonic beasts besides the hyrda. I'm not use to having to physically turn my head to see the whole pond fills. I can't even run. By the way of my turn - I promise I'll play after work tonight until my year is finished. I will be the only ones filled. Make a half dozen buckets, wood is fine, and designate a furniture stockpile, preferably on the way - Unobtanium makes them to sleep, eat, or drink? I've never really necessary once your fort gets large enough, faired nowhere near as well. Ah yes, and one last bit of housekeeping, left for me by Coelocanth woke from hibernation to finalize the traders.

A mighty train of five wagons, laden with more slo-mo and singing children. Altogether I'm glad I reread the comic to see Dave's Kernel again. The Dwarf Fortress Log of Sedil Zalìs, 24th of Hematite, 1053 I'm not use to having to physically turn my head to see the whole ship crashing straight down. And good old biological improbability. Thinking trees, fine, cool. How about: why are the Na'vi were so deep in the Uncanny Valley it's hard to take them seriously, especially are so similar it defeats the purpose. [MASTER_THIEF]? [RELIGION:ANY_APPROPRIATE_POWER]? [BABYSNATCHER]? Dats runty

I'm interested in these vermin creatures that can be fished like Teddy Roosevelt.

Yeah, everybody talks about how awful that game was.  A pity it runs into a few noticeable repeats, but still, that's some golden stuff.

I've decided to have a go at compiling something of mine.

Some key sentences:

"In IVAN, I met a sturdy zombies were like a nuclear reactor cooling skill for melee and another hand."

"You focus, and a -Black bronze warhammer-, both for Christmas, and left shoulder."

"Holding a pieces of wood plated greaves, but brands are just have him do whatever it was once the direction whether forward or bashing implements onto the whip, but my iron boots of gold (2kg), one party coming at anyone on top of the active Translator."

"Body Control your arms madly and everyone on the Init.txt file."

"The vomit-green rug on top of the far end of tags added to crawl away from making 16 color tag in the different sizes litter the wrestling skill for melee and attack)."

"General -2 penalty to charisma when it may not even a few meters as a pressure plate."

"Holding a Steel Full Helm- shaped like TA are going to the now-broken iron shoulderpads without serious boots+, and leather leggings along the ground up, the last demon screen (in AM) is too large pile, but after a while even smelled by columns is supposed to a lever or pressure plated boots."

"You can obtain and wear burning to be played like a space shuttle lasted apart from customizeable greyish trousers."

"Owns an Iron handaxe and a veritable crapload of tags added, and go stand on the field."

"Straining your mind draws vivid images of you, both features would really be useful if applied to reattach its head a few times until it lost balance, and one of those - at close range."

"Thrust rack: Allows loading an Iron Battleaxe."

"Full graphics supporting several scars along the armor has 12 unspent bolts."

"...a shirt of leather sandals+."

"Or to sync anvils onto the Elves, Dwarves, but.... The head snapped off."

"The zombies, then a Zombie Elite Bowman > anything like the tide."

Some of the RTD-based segments came out really awful.

Ampersand: I know what your doing, but I can't put the name to it. It's only been a year since I took AI and all ready I've forgotten the name to the process.

Everybody else: WARNING, WARNING BORING TECHNICAL INFORMATION FOLLOWING. Basically what Ampersand is doing is using the entire bay12 forum, as a 'dictionary' of not only words but sentence structures as well, to generate sentences.

Sentences are generated by picking a random word (or a high probability word depending on how complex your program is) and then to get the next word(s) it picks them by looking at the first word and sees which ones in the dictionary are similar or near in use; In other words if the first word picked was 'hello' and according to the dictionary the word 'world' always came after 'hello', then the sentence would be 'hello world'.

As for the sensibility of sentences, each time it looks to choose what comes next if you specify that the next four words should be similar/near instead of just one, you'll start to get more coherent sentences. They'll still be nonsense, but it seems more correct. However the trade off with using more words is that you need a bigger 'dictionary', however something like the entire fourm should give a large enough sample of text to work with.

Note about above: This is how I was taught it. Ampersand maybe doing it a completely different way, but it should give you some idea of how it works. And Ampersand feel free to correct me if you want.
