An as-of-yet unnamed community TBS
« on: December 26, 2009, 06:36:59 pm »

Even I don't know much about mechanics, though I am, as of this word, deciding that each turn will be a half-day(so day1, night1, etc) and it will not, at least yet, be heavily action-oriented.

The general feeling, for now, will be relaxed city bulding.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay, where are we?
Well, that's not very helpful. Lets look closer, at the non-? square.
Hmm, still too far out? Once again, we focus on the one blank space.
Finally, some detail!
But still not enough. Zooming in again...
Great!
Now we must decide where to settle.
(The coordinates are a to d for the rows, and the columns are 1 to 4)
(The map heiarchy is
Overworld
Large
Middle
Small
Micro (unseen, but splits each Small square into 16, just like all of the other layers)
Local: The insides of buildings, mostly. Will probably use an 8x8 grid or 16x16)
Once a tile has been chosen, I'll create another map, and we can start building.
To refer to a specific tile on any map, you can give absolute coordinates, starting at the Overworld level (Current:B2-A2-C3-??) or prefix the level(O-B2-A2-C3-??, L-A2-C3-??, M-C3-??, or S-?? refer to the current one) the -?? can be omitted, I am just using it because it is undecided for now.
Any ammount of stuff can be done in each turn, resources permitting (including time, though).
So far, all graphics are MSpainted, and I am adding tile types as I need them.
Can you make it Total Annihilation-themed?
Don't know what that is.
Can you explain it?
There's two factions, ARM and CORE, fighting a war of total annihilation against each other. Primary resources are metal and energy, both obtained from numerous sources. All units are expendable machines, except ARM's are piloted by clones, and CORE's are controlled by computerized brains. Technology escalates in levels, without completely replacing the previous units by new ones. There's a sufficiently diverse set of both mobile units and stationary defences to keep the game varied. Also, artillery firing across the global map. I can provide unit lists for both sides if you need it.
Hmm, well, the tech-level I had in mind doesn't really fit in well, but maybe I can have it transition, with the aid of magic? It won't be a direct copy, but I could use it as inspiration for the late-game...
As for the location, I will wait for at least a second person to cast their vote, since this isn't a single player game, and where to start is a big choice. Later, I might allow single-person small choices, but as it is, this is something big.
Actually, "technology escalates in levels" is slightly too broad. You have the initial constructor, the Commander, which is Level 0. You build the Level 1 factories and structures with it, or some of them at least. Level 1 factories build Level 1 builders (one for each Vehicle, Kbot, Aircraft, and Naval), which build Level 1 and 2 factories and structures. Level 2 factories build Level 2 builders, which build Level 3 buildings that are most prominently superweapons.
Well, B1 is as good as anywhere, and I want to keep this going. I'll start on the sub-map, though if anyone thinks you should settle somewhere else, I don't mind changing the area.
Also, this is not like DF, you can expand your site.
I'd settle for B2, actually (B12 would be ideal, but the map won't go that far). A strip of beach is good for many purposes.
Well, they are consecutive, so why not start on either and expand to cover both? B1/2!
I have B1 mapped (Only needed one new tile type), and B2 shouldn't take long, either.
B2. Don't want to flood out to another tile just because we want to expand.
Well, B2 it is.
You arrive at the future site of... whatever this place will be... and take stock of what you have:
-1 person (you):
  • +16 work-hours per day-night cycle
  • Consumes one food-unit per day
  • consumes one water-unit per day
  • Weak magical abilities(+1 MP per day, max 4). Unpracticed(can improve with work)
-30 preserved(will not decay) food-units
-10 water-units
-10 wood-units
-one set of basic tools
  • Axe
  • Shovel
  • Saw
  • Hammer
  • And others
-Seeds
  • 10 fast-grow(100 daylight hours to fruit) food-plants(produces: 1.2 seeds, one food-unit,0.2 water-units)
  • anything else you come up with within reason.
-anything else you come up with within reason.
Construction:
-Farm plot(2 work-hours, 1x1, must be built on fertile land. Grass is fertile enough, but sand isn't.)
-Shelter(20 work-hours, 8x8)
-anything else you come up with within reason.
(the nxn is size, in sub-tile units. Each tile of the local map is 16x16 sub-tiles. Yay, finally, the last subdevision!)
At the moment, technology is very low, since you simply don't have the resources to make anything fancy. Another person will come soonish(2 days). Weather predicted to be calm for at least 6 days. Indevidual trees are not shown on any map-level larger than the sub-tile grid, except in large enough quantities(at least three in the 16x16 area)
I don't know how much of this will work, but I do like the idea of eventually reaching global war of nonliving machines controlled by the living beings.
Start to build Shelter, as a question how much food-units/water-units do we consume and how fast?
