Do some Dorfs just love being homeless?
« on: December 26, 2009, 02:21:28 pm »

This is just getting ridiculous.  I have 195 free bedrooms for "rent" in my fort (and rent is turned off, so it's not like they can't afford them).  I even have 24 non-designated beds for just in case.  Yet somehow about 20 of my Dorfs still have no room to call their own and are sleeping wherever they happen to be when they get drowsy.  It's not that they lack funds; one of them has over 2000 dorfbux, and he's currently sleeping on top of a lever he was pulling casino-style to get more money.  What is WRONG with these little idiots?

iirc, you can't turn rent off, but you can turn off "0 Rent", which is what happens when something becomes so expensive the game defaults it to zero.

Either way, none of the rest of my Dorfs have any problem renting the zero-rent rooms.  Yet this certain handful insists on sleeping on the cold stone (or sometimes green glass) floor instead of renting a damned room.  What gives?

They've spent too much time with the Philosopher, and they've rejected living a worldly life in favor of stoicism?

An amusing theory, thwarted by the fact that there's no philosopher in this fortress.  I think they're actually just a pack of skinflints who refuse to spend a penny more than they have to.  And if that means sleeping on a rough shale block floor, so be it.

Most likely they spent all their money on food or something (shops). No rent doesn't mean free food. And they get evicted when they go into debt even if zero rent is set.

Are these dorfs, perchance, hunters? THey've been known to ignore lodgings.

You missed the bit where I said their accounts are quite healthy.  None of the usual causes are at fault here; they're just being Dorfs.  Hell, I had one Dorf who got unhappy about having no work for 2 seasons in a row because he spent the first season On Break, and then proceeded to spend the next season chasing my mayor constantly as said mayor actually DID do work so he could have a meeting to complain about how he had no work last season.

And no, there are no hunters in my fort.  Any Dorf who comes in with Hunting as a job, I turn it off immediately.  The last thing I need is a Unicorn invasion on my fort, which some witless hunter would inevitably cause.

Check those 'grass-sleepers' account. They propably WON'T rent a room that have '0 rent' because, incidentally, their account is on minus value.

0 > minus value.

I suppose I should give up on anyone actually reading what I've posted...  Anyway, it turns out that the Dorf who's decided he'd rather sleep on the ground ALSO spent an entire freaking season slacking off, and has ALSO been chasing my mayor around like a lost puppy, demanding attention that the mayor is trying to devote to tasks that actually matter.  I think that definitely deserves to be classified as a bug, incidentally: Dorfs refusing to do work even when there's a smorgasboard of work available to them because they want to complain about how they have no work makes no sense.

what kind of personality traits does that dwarf have?  it may be intended (mis)behavior, and not a bug at all.

Little late to check that now, but the fact remains that the reason he refused to get a bedroom was because he was trying to attend a meeting constantly with someone who refused to attend any meetings since the "conduct meeting" priority ranking seems to be dead last on the list of things any Dorf will do.  Since I resolved that, he got himself a proper room, and is no longer using the kitchen floor as his pillow.

job preferences are based on personality, among other things.  if your manager or leader isnt very social, he'll probably avoid holding meetings.  if the dwarf in question likes to bitch (and some do) he'll try to complain more often.  its not that meeting priorities are bugged, its that they're based on the individual dwarfs social preferences.

In that case, I have insanely bad luck when it comes to Dorfs who get chosen for positions of power.  I have yet to see a mayor get elected who wasn't a total introvert who avoids meetings.

All my mayors put "Attend Meeting" on the same priority as "No Job"
