[40d] Abnormal Program Termination (RESOLVED)
« on: December 25, 2009, 09:43:37 pm »

I'm not sure where this should go, but after a while of gameplay I get Abnormal Program Termination errors that exit the game and makes me loose hours of progress.  :'(

Is there any fix to this or is it compatibility problems with my computer?

Anything noteworthy in your errorlog.txt or gamelog.txt?

"The Human Ranger's left eye has been torn out!" is the last message recieved before the game crashed I believe.

I don't see any obvious causes of a crash.  Is it crashing reliably on one particular save, or does it just crash after a while in any save?  Are you using any mods?

If it's one particular save with no mods, please upload your save folder to the DF File Depot.  If it's one particular save WITH mods, please upload your entire DF folder instead.

If it happens with any save, you may have a corrupt copy of 40d.  Re-download 40d and unzip it to a separate location, making sure not to overwrite any previous DF installations.

I've only modded the game to allow Bronze Collosuses to be played in Adventure Mode. I'm redownloading and reinstalling dwarf fortress now.

EDIT: Apparently it WAS my Dwarf Fortress being corrupt. That or me tinkering with Bronze Collosus raw files. Well, thanks for helping me fix all this. If the problem continues be sure to expect more pleading for people to help me here. :-\

EDIT EDIT: Damnit. The error just happened, again. It's nothing to do with my copy of Dwarf Fortress, I've edited absolutely NOTHING and the error still happens. If anyone can help me fix this, it'd be appreciated!

Also, what operating system are you using, and where is DF installed?  Does the error message say ANYTHING other than "Abnormal Program Termination"?

I'm using Windows XP, and yes, it specifies what's causing the error: C:\Dwarf Fortress\dwarfort.exe. That should also answer your other question.

My best guess is that you have out-of-date drivers, probably video drivers.  Try updating those.

That's what I thought when I tried to play a game a while back, but I've tried looking for more recent video drivers but there don't seem to be any.

Well, you can try upgrading to 40d16 and see if that helps.

Yes, that works, thank you! For realz this time!

While I was hoping to play a more stable version of Dwarf Fortress, d16'll have to do I suppose.

Well, if switching to d16 helped, the instabilities causing your crash were probably in your video drivers or something, not in DF itself.  Anyway, if it's still working, you can retitle this thread to say "fixed" or whatever so that Toady won't have to read it.
