Does dwarf companion change gender?
« on: December 24, 2009, 01:18:15 pm »

Can I use dwarf companion to, say, change one of the three cave crocs in my river to a male?
And on a completely unrelated note, what is the best way to capture cave crocodiles?

Not sure about gender - as for capturing UG river stuff, I usually collapse some natural walls beside the waterfall and let it drain out (hell, let's be honest, I do that anyways) and then dig underneath the riverbed using up stairs. Plant some cage traps in the under-tunnel, and then channel out underneath a waiting croc. They'll fall into your tunnel and be stunned for a sec while your miner runs away, and then follow it into the cages. Repeat as necessary. Works for all other riverlings too.

Yes and no.

It will change the displayed gender, but not the actual creature's gender. For example, a dwarf changed from male to female will still pursue the love of female dwarves.

Is that true for creatures?
And if not, can anything I do give my female cave crocs some love?

Changing gender works for animals.  It doesn't work for Dwarves.  I am guessing that is because Dwarves have other data lists associated with them, concerning social relationships and marital status.

But for animals, it works, just fine.  You can even turn a dog into a croc and make baby crocs.  I have not tried this with crocs, but I have bred a converted dog with a tamed wolf, and a converted horse with a tamed elephant.

Just to make absolutely sure -- since DC changes displayed gender and nothing else, does this mean marriage and pregnancy are also unaffected? I had an idea requiring two male dwarves in a relationship, and it'll be a mite awkward if one of them keeps popping out babies. This isn't an insurmountable problem, though, since military dwarves never marry. (I think, anyway.)

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Not only can military dwarves be married, they pump out babies like mad.

They can't be married while they're in the military, however.

That explains why my Champion pair that wrestles with each other all the time or my two founder pairs (one had a Champion, the other has an Elite Marksdwarf) never got married. Well, dang, I was hoping the surviving founder pair would marry.

As for gender switches on dwarves and the fact the change is superficial, it'd be fun to mess with the mind of other viewers with, especially if it's a succession fort that allows changes like that. "btw, I made a few changes." "oh, okay, I-- hey wait a second..."

More on the gender changing thing:
I tried making my four cats male (before it had been half male half female), and a few months later the male one gave birth to kittens. It's been a few years now with no kittens, so I imagine that companion doesn't purge the womb before it makes any "changes"
It most likely behaves differently in dwarves, as they only have babies when married.

So basically, Dwarf Companion can act as the equivalent of the TF gun from El Goonish Shive?  That's kinda cool.  I shall mess with the heads of one of my Dwarves by swapping his/her gender now and see how his friends react as well.
