EPIC Quests
« on: December 23, 2009, 08:26:37 pm »

Ever read lord of the rings, because I remember reading an epic Adventure about a fellowship turned duo who destroyed a evil ring in middle earth. Now imagine something like that in adventure mode? That would be pretty epic. I mean have this huge quest made from a bunch of preset scenarios, and have the character journey on a quest to affect the very world you're playing in. Maybe randomize the item or person they have to destroy for Fun (I.E. You have to destroy the golden door of doom, before UristMCevildwarf In his impenetrable tower of doom gets an idea to open it, and flood the world with demons.) What do you guys think?

I think it's been discussed before.   The game is, for the most part, going to handle 'quests' procedurally rather than picking from a group of pre-set scenarios.

Already mentioned and practically confirmed, though its impossible to implement it now.

Why? Because the world itself right now doesn't have an actual historical structure that goes much farther then "in 1000, X killed Y in the place of example, etc". Epic quests will rise eventualy when the worldgen is more complex, when civilizations actualy exist in adventurer mode and properly interact with other civs, magic, etc.

And yes, all quests are supposed to be procedurally generated during worldgen and actual play in the future, pre-set quests will likely never exist in DF.

I suggested something like this three or four months before...I like the idea of adventures involving all the world, but I think that the world should'nt be saved just by you, sometimes the NPCs should save the world too.
The quests should not be made of premade scenarios. The main idea of DFis to have ramdom things happening, right?

Well that AND because the game doesn't simulate vast distances.

Imagine Lord of the Ring resolved on foot in a week.

Imagine if the ring made you a target and random encounters shot-up ten-fold

Id probably would stop playing the game on the spot... Or just throw away the ring.

Since that effectively means you will have multiple encounters every step on the world map.

Really? I'd want that ring. No more trudging around aimlessly in the world map waiting for some wolves to attack you so that you can get your Wrestling to Legendary.

Throw it at some poor sap.

It's their problem now.
