Site Selection Successful: Eshongedor Elisgast Othud.
« on: December 23, 2009, 12:23:07 pm »

Oh dear...  This should be Fun(tm).

The name translates to: Goodevil, the Thin Cleft of Morality.

Fortress Objective #1: Test out several new fortification configurations, including training the user in the proper implementation of mechanical constructs.

Fortress Objective #2: Test out live capture/taming/breeding/training methods on exciting fauna.

Site:

First of all? BEST. NAME. EVER.  Guilty Goo for the win.

Second: Joyous wilds + Terrifying marshland = Fun.  A river runs through both biomes... I don't know what Joyous does to fish, but I'm looking forward to some undead carp.

This fortress exists on the precipice between Good and Evil in a very literal fashion.  Flux on site, plenty of mudstone for iron, marble and granite + gabbro for ores, gems, and anything else a dwarf could want.  Sand for glass if I ever get around to it.  Probably no magma though.  S'okay, I can live without magma.

Let's kick this pig.

There won't be any fish in that river, since it's actually a Brook. Also, I hope you've either got a powerful computer or a low population cap, since a 9x9 region can be quite taxing, especially if you've got lots of Z-levels (which is quite likely, given the mountains).

Also, worldgen info?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Awww, damn, good eye.  Oh well, still lots of fun to be had.

There aren't that many z-levels, actually. Highest cliff is 4, along the brook.  It's surprisingly flat terrain.

I've got pop limited to 70, and my machine is pretty robust plus I've set the process to HIGH priority, I may take it to HIGHEST since I've got a dual-core.  I built this machine to be a next-gen gaming rig and now I'm playing DF on it.  ;D

If it chokes I saved the world folder and can try again with a smaller embark zone.

World gen is default, btw.  Unless you're looking for the seed itself.

Ten minutes into second attempt (9x9 was too much, 7x7 is much better) and my units screen is full of dead olmmen, snakemen, frogmen, lizardmen, and a giant olm.  Underground river, maybe?  HFS probably.

They fell into the bottomless pit that the UG river drains into.

(9x9 was too much, 7x7 is much better)

I usually go 8x8. It runs pretty well, drops to maybe 60fps when my pop limit hits (140 dwarves). My system's an i7 920, 6gb ram, normal priority. Since it doesn't multithread, if your clockspeed and RAM are near mine you should hit the same FPS at 8x8 with 140 dwarves - so at 70 you should still be cranking at 100fps. Assuming similar clockspeed. With a slower CPU at 70 you should probably dip not much lower than 60fps, save for during sieges -- from my experience.

Either that or a pond, but it's definitely in there.

Funny quip, I tapped a uriver in the recent map I'm in on the level above the river in the little cavern it has. My miner proceeded to decide that was a good place to nap while the mason was running down to wall it up before the giant olms decided to climb out. Well, an Olmann comes climbing out, bites a chunk out of the sleeping miner, who woke up really grumpy and shoved his pick in the Olmann's head -- olmann died, dwarf uninjured.

I seriously expected the Dwarf to get rocked.

(There is a story behind this. . .)

This is an Alder Omelette. All craftsdwarfship is of highest quality. It is encircled with bands of cheese. It menaces with spikes of bacon, ham, and peppers. On the object is an image of dwarves in egg white. The dwarves are eating.

Never underestimate the CPU hunger of Dwarf Fortress.

Worldgen info requests generally include the seeds (layout, names, and history), so yes, that's what I want.

Sure thing, soon as someone tells me how to attach a .zip to this thread. :)

AFAIK, there isn't actually an attachment option for the forum. The Dwarf Fortress File Depot is generally used when something DF related needs to be hosted.

I meant the worldgen info, not the save file

And we also want to know if you are using the plain vanilla, or have added some mods

Awesome, one more question since this is my first time doing this... how do I pull a seed from a game I've already started?

Vanilla 40d, the only mods were my adding some [trainable] flags to some animals that should, IMO, be trainable (bears and the like).

Seed will have to wait until I return from the holidays, I'll post it on 1/5 or so.
