So I'm just getting into Adventure Mode
« on: December 23, 2009, 08:45:14 am »

I've played a bit of Fortress mode, for what little bit that helped.

First time through I strangled an elf kid but got speared... Totally worth it.

Second time, fell in a murky pond and couldn't get out... Gave in to starvation.

Third time, got lost in a dwarven capital.

Fourth time, finally found a quest giver inside a tavern. The problem? Some thick-headed hammerer blocks the door.I try everything(Yes, I talked to him anyway but of course got "come closer etc") but only manage to enter after sleeping for 8 hours, during which time he wandered off somewhere. So I finally get to the guy and will take any quest at all just to have something to do.... "Ah, well we're quite untroubled here". Apparently I've genned a world where all creatures happily coexist because not a one person have given me a quest in all the human towns I've found.

And people say fortress mode is infuriating starting out..

EDIT: Now I got attacked by a cougar while in travel mode to a new town and died. Now it's flashing "You are deceased.Press Escape to finish." of course BUT it won't let me exit, no way no how. *shuts down DF process with a sigh*

Press Escape -> Finish Game

Voila, your world is saved and you will be even mentioned (or at least your death) in Legends Mode.

I said "No way, No how" and I meant "No way, No how".Of course I tried Escape a few dozen times. It must've glitched somehow. :-\

Oh, that's now strange.

And about people blocking doors, 'T'ravel around the city, tile or two, and go back. Position of every citizen will be changed. And it's faster than sleeping.

Sounds like your just starting too get use to Adventure Mode. Let me see if I can help you here.

In the case of your second issue you should learn to use cntl + direction buttons (course I'm using a mac so buttons can slightly vary but it should be simalar) to tell you charater to perform a unique command. In this case to climb out of the lake.

Third problem could be solved with memorization, course Travel mode should work if your not too deep inside.

Forth problem is mainly due to the AI's behavior sometimes, but also when you get the message that they are untroubled, it likely means that either A. they really have nothing going on there or B. you haven't kill enough things and make your charater strong enough to gain thier trust yet. It'll take time before you'll get a mission to do semimegabeast exterminating.

Finally this sounds like the adventure mode death glitch, to me this sounds like you got the 40d16 version(this is the one I have), but then again, I don't know how far this glitch really goes back, but basiclly the game drasticlly slows down upon your charater's death.

Basiclly there are two ways to solve this....

1. When you know your fixing to die, make sure that when you get the message that your struck down or dead or something like that you hit escape then. That should save you from facing the agony of the glitch.

Otherwise,

2. When you see the message press escape to finish, I would press escape and then press down a few times, then wait for about 5 -15 minutes. Because eventually the game should begin to move again but slowly. Then it should take you to the menu and go down the # of times you pressed. Once you know it stops move it to "finish game" and then enter. Simple as that.

If somebody is blocking your path, just hit "s" to lie down and crawl underneath them. Be sure to hit "s" again afterwards to stand up, since lying down makes you much slower and prevents you from dodging attacks (you'll only be able to block or parry).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

When somebody is blocking your way, remember to hit 's' to drop prone; then you will be able to move into the same tiles as standing creatures.

pronemind. *is shot*

Thanks a ton for the help, I've gotten a good start now, though there is another thing I'd like to ask:

Is there a trick to finding specific people in "town"-areas? I finally got a quest after killing some wolves and it was to kill an elf leader. So I travel to the specified town/area, and yes, I know about the compass-like thing in the top left.I still can't find the damn treehugger.I look at absolutely everyone in the region plus neighbouring ones where the compass shows "---" and can't find anybody but children and guards anyway.I'm considering starting a carnage just to draw attention to myself and hope the target tries to stop me.A Stealth kill would be so much better though.

The elf in forest retreat? Uh, it's still easier than finding a dwarven mayor/king in dwarven cave.

Just roam at AND around the site, because they tend to roam outside forest retreat limits.

And yes, starting a massacre is also a good way to find a particular elf.

Elf leaders blink like legendaries and other civ leaders do, so that's one way to tell them apart.

There was a blinking elf there, but that was an ordinary guard(missing several limbs and zoning in and out of consciousness) and not my target.

This happens to me all the freaking time. Fortunately, you can make your own wars in adventure mode to liven things up. I would however still like to so some kind of "general hostility" setting for a world gen parameter.

This happens to me all the freaking time. Fortunately, you can make your own wars in adventure mode to liven things up. I would however still like to so some kind of "general hostility" setting for a world gen parameter.

These dev_next items are practically guaranteed to provide more conflict:

# III.D.2: Allowing conflict over succession, schisms and contested claims to entity positions in world gen (part of Core63)
# III.D.3: Allowing such conflict in regular play (part of Core63)

# Core63, SUCCESSION, ASSOCIATED CONFLICTS AND SCHISMS, (Future): First of all, succession for positions needs to occur in play, so that dead liaisons are replaced, as well as dead monarchs. Then the process needs to be made messier all around. Wars over succession, schisms over religious disagreements, etc., starting from world gen and coming into regular play. In dwarf mode, you might be involved on one side or the other, directly or indirectly, relying on more involved diplomacy and army code than we currently have, and adventure mode can also gain a lot from such conflicts.
