The Na'vi culture was big into their bond with nature, and they were basically able to bond with everything on the planet EXCEPT the bigass dragon bird thing, because it was big and ferocious and basically symbolized the might of the planet to them.
When someone bonds with the might of your entire planet, which is a living internet, and you revere it and you also revere the animals and this guy did something which is basically a miracle, you decide to drop your petty grievances(maybe an understatement heh) with him and decide the planet has chosen him to help you. And if you're a member of a different tribe than him well the only thing you really know is he has THE ULTIMATE PREDATOR, and he needs your help to SAVE THE PLANET so you'd better damn well join his army.

That's the way I see it at least.

ALSO I don't see what the Indians had to do with Cortez? He went to South American no India.
Oh wait you guys mean American Indians/Native Americans? Well get it right!

I think Cortes' biggest asset was his politicking ability. That and the fact that most of the tributary tribes to the aztecs hated them fiercedly. So he was able to muster an impressive native force. The other factors are secondary, methinks.

That's exactly my point. The humans should've put up a big show to impress the Navi. If they have holograph technology, there's no end to what can be done.

Instead they came and tried to "educate" them, letting them know exactly what humans are and offer them caffeinated drinks and digital wristwatches and we want to be friends and I CAN HAS UNOBTANIUM?

Yeah, they blew it.

I used a random nationality. Indians seemed foreign enough of a culture without offending anybody due to misunderstandings.

Seriously, they should've just hired Iron Maiden's stage crew to handle the first contact.

The problem there is the Human's had long since lost their chance.  The Na'vi already knew about the humans well enough and long enough that a bunch of them could speak English for fuck's sake.  It was pretty clear that they understood in a practical sense what the Sky People were and even how the Avatars worked, even if they weren't up on the science.

I'm reminded of the stories of American scouts befriending the aboriginals in the South Pacific during WWII.  The Islanders twigged pretty fast to stuff like guns and airplanes, a lot faster than the Aztecs supposedly did.  Sure they're amazing, but once you figure out that the stick can kill people and the huts fly they're not that hard to conceptualize.  What blew them away was clothing.  The Guineans especially had never seen things like pants and just assumed that was their skin, so they couldn't figure out how the foreigners took a crap.  And hey, anybody who doesn't have to crap must be a god.

I'm not sure where I was going with that story, but I thought it'd be entertaining.

There's a very good reason they couldn't convince the Navi they were gods: due to the neural interface with the planet, they knew as fact that THEIR goddess was literally real and cared for them.

The god gambit has never worked too well anyway. Just look up Magellan's fate.

For that matter, it didnt work well with the aztecs either. They might have found them unnerving, but most of them did not *seriously* think Cortes&company were gods.

Are you kidding? They had white skin and sailed around in giant boats.

And they wore pants.

Yeah, well, gods that are feared get more worshippers than gods that are loved. Imagine a 500 foot tall holographic Eddie appearing out of a tornado of flame, blasting a sick guitar solo at like 500dB, and then pointing his finger towards a couple of random Na'vi who promptly fall dead (use snipers). Hell, to drive the point closer to home, have him riding a 500 foot tall Pandoran predatory animal. And then he rains some fire from the sky (artillery with white phosphorus shells), laughs maniacally, proclaims himself a new god and as a coup de grace causes a holographic representation of one of the big trees to shrivel away and die.

Oh, and god gambit always fails because the natives discover that the gods bleed. Holograms don't bleed.

Once they figured out the hologram can't touch them either, I think they would have stopped caring.  They live in a biosphere composed entirely of glowing shit.  I doubt the Na'vi would find holograms very impressive.

Maybe the hologram can't touch them, but the artillery you set up sure can.

Yeah, the holograms are just there to provide an impressive and invulnerable face to your arsenal. And if they're still unimpressed, at least it'll provide a good distraction.
