I don't agree that we're all magically getting some sort of unconscious urge to write the same stories over and over again. I'd rather just hit that with occam's razor and say we're drawing inspiration from our ancestors. And the reason that civilizations have similar myths even though they had "no contact" is because them having no contact with each other is bullshit. We all came from the same place.

More accurately; there are only about 6 - 9 different core storylines (or 'threads').

There just aren't that many original ideas in the world.

Yeah, Jung's idea of the universal mind or whatever is too mystical, but it basically reflects the notions of human universals - common biology leads to common thought processes, which translates into societies developing many parallels, and people thinking in the same ways about lots of things, such as stories.

Ok, I just come home after watching Avatar (in 3d) and it's EPIC! Everything good said about it is true and everything bad said about it is false. And this is for someone who do 3d himself, read TV tropes, and tend to be very picky about scifi hardness.
I think people who consider the movie unoriginal don't really get the REAL plot in all its nuances, and it actually has pretty good science for a movie.

If you don't have anything to complain about then you don't get what we are REALLY whining about.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Nearly all societies had mythos of pointy eared elves regardless of whether they had contact with each other.

pointy eared elves are newer than short dwarves, in the earlier tales dwarves were not described as short, and elves gained their pointy ears with tolkien and the lotr

Quote from: wikipedia
A hallmark of fantasy elves is also their long and pointed ears (a convention begun with a note of Tolkien's that the ears of elves were "leaf-shaped")

Yeah, the Elves of old were pretty nasty critters known for eating children, amongst other things.

You mean the Fay/The fair folk? Yeah, They were only called that because a more accurate name would be met with deadly retaliation. You would be lucky to simply be killed, and that's just the "good" seelie fay.

Well, whatever Toady does to the base game is considered DF canon, as opposed to all the mods.

For example, cannibal elves are a fairly new addition that was a result of the world gen history portion of the army arc being finished and the ethics tag for elves eating the bodies of fallen enemies added into the raws. Also, demon carp. They used to be worse too.

The day after that release was hysterical on the forums.

What DOESN'T eat children in old faery tales? Including children?

Seconded mad engineer. Also, there is canonically room temperature superconductor in the ground, and some of those rock formations look quite a fit like field lines, so the mountains levitating completely naturally only requires a MINOR breach of the laws of physics. (assumig that   they are not made of solid unobtanium, because then the humans would just mine THOSE. In fact, if I didn't know that unobtanium has to be limited due to that it wouldnt be so valuable otherwise, I'd assume they ARE 90% of it and that there is some molten unobtanium seas spinning at the center of the planet generating massive electricity and magnetism levitating them.)
