As for how the Na'Vi evolved, I'm betting those trees had a hand in it...

This was my thought too.

Especially considering the size of that sail (it was tiny).
Then shoot a high powered laser at it continuously for the needed duration to get to the proper velocity, as Tilla said was already explained in the wiki. That idea has been around in Scifi and sci-plausible for decades.

Hol-ee crap. Search for a graphic novel called Aquablue. It is Avatar in the oceans.

No, really. It is Avatar in water as opposed to jungle. Exactly.

Wow. Sure it's french, but it has everything short of a few specific scenes, and it appears the native blue life is more modern.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

There's so many of these things, that seem to be direct inspirations to scenes of Avatar. it would be too hard to list them all of course.

Also, why they didn't use X or Y or have thousands more troops, well, that's kinda explained that getting stuff to that planet was excruciatingly expensive (just one of those big Dragon aircraft thingies had to be brought in multiple trips and assembled on site). And the publicity stuff. And all that. Etc. Anyway they explain a lot of things, even if some explanations are stupid.

Note that there's a complete Avatar movie entry in TvTropes (with an entire SECTION dedicated to Colonel McPants. Who is awesome. Damn, I was rooting for the good guy because, you know, the bad guy was kinda an asshole... but he was such a badass I didn't want anything to happen to him. Maybe he'd be defeated and go roundhouse kick some martians or indians in frustration afterwards, or punch a hole in the Sun)

well they were mercs, at a mining camp, using modified transport planes, wat kinda sad how fast they went down, I mean what's up with like on or two of the bird things climbing on them and they just fall out of the sky, for god sakes their bi-prop planes with huge cargo holds, the way they went down I'm surprised someone on board sensing didn't destroy the fleet....

Colonel is definitely my favorite. He's just so ridiculous I can't help but love him. He's like the Chuck Norris of the Alpha Centauri system. Dude had his mech outfitted with a god damn hunting knife.

When he pulled out the mech-knife all I could think was, "You got a lotta guts - Let's see what they look like."

Carl Jung had a theory that all mythos are derived from a common human consciousness. Nearly all societies had mythos of pointy eared elves regardless of whether they had contact with each other. Nearly all societies have a story similar to Noahs Ark. There are many such parallels in mythos throughout time and various cultures. The gaining of power through resurrection is also a common theme (see Jesus).

This suggests that there is some latent psychological "memory" that causes these to persist.

Gene Rodenberry, the creator of Star Trek, was a member of a group who regularly spoke to "Seth". Seth was a being from another dimension who spoke through the body of a human occasionally. Seth spoke of many things about the future, and it was through the inspiration gained form these speaking that Gene Rodenberry decided to write Star Trek. ( http://sethspeaks.org/# )

It is said that he believed that we can create our own reality. He wanted to create the vision of a universe that was positive instead of the gloom and doom about nulcear holocaust that was floating around at the time.

SPock is evidence of this elven mytho popping up again. A wise, long-lived pointy ear'd dude. Add to that him being resurrected throgh the Genesis event and you start to throw in some Jesus mythos on top of that.

We are all just rerunning the same old stories over and over again with a contemporary spin each time. There are a set number of common themes in our mythos and these are the stories that resonate most strongly with us. Successful writers are tapping those mythological themes, maybe unconciously but maybe some on purpose.

We can talk about Star Wars too and Obi Wan, luke, etc.

How about Lord of the Rings? Again a lot of the same themes

Lets not forget Monomyth and other Joseph Campbell-type things - the Heroes Journey and all the related archetypes of that show up in literally any movie.

Well if the Hero didn't go on a journey it would be a really boring movie, wouldn't it? :P

I don't agree that we're all magically getting some sort of unconscious urge to write the same stories over and over again. I'd rather just hit that with occam's razor and say we're drawing inspiration from our ancestors. And the reason that civilizations have similar myths even though they had "no contact" is because them having no contact with each other is bullshit. We all came from the same place.

Or even simpler: deep down, we all like very simmilar things.

BTW: there is an essay, somewhat related to this, by Norman Spinrad: "The emperor of all things"
