I think the District 9 CGI aliens were much better done than the Na'vi. Na'vi look kinda plastic, prawns looked like actual living creatures. Avatar certainly wins in sheer quantity of CGI, but I don't think it's number one when it comes to quality.

i'm all for district 9 and hate avatar, it's animeish aestetics, etc. but it's far easier to cgi insectoid aliens than humanoid or mamaloid creatures

Bullshit, the District 9 CGI aliens are a masterpiece and have to be some of the most difficult CGI i've seen. Avatar gets amazingness for having environment CGI that is just breathtaking, but the Prawns from District 9 are masterworks on a similar level, if smaller in scale.

The ability to show human emotions on what was pretty much a prawn face and get the sympathy of the audience despite never speaking anything other than unintelligible clicks and whirrs is simply amazing. I've rewatched District 9 over and over, looking at the subtle movements they put into the Prawn faces to get them to look human without actually looking human.

Of course the best thing about the Prawns is they're actually plausible alien life, unlike the Na'vi, who could have been plausible, if their physical form wasn't a gigantic plot hole and they weren't specifically designed to be cute and lovable.

The real awesome in Avatar was the environments. The environments were just amazing. There's no two ways about it.

actually, i agree with that. what i meant is that, technologically, insectoid\robots etc. are less demanding.

also, i loved disctrict 9 and watched it preciselly 3.5 times, but the fact they are so prawn like makes them a little less plausible. still, i don't care all that much about that, the challenge was still there and was overcome.

I hate avatar. My issue with it is that it was cheap. It was cheap despite being the most monetary expensive film in the world: there was no risk involved in it, it was unoriginal at all levels: artistically, intellectually, etc. it was nothing more than a trailer to showcase the latest advancements in cgi technology.

I've seen District 9 twice now, once in theater and once at home and it's great both ways.

It had a 30 million dollar budget right?  That's 10 times less than Avatar.

Oh Cool!  Another senseless fight of tastes using the words love and hate...

Surely all objectivity is gathered together in this thread...

Of course, because people's opinions mean absolutely nothing and obviously the best way of examining art is through scientific method.

(if you're really only complaining about people colloquially using "love" and "hate", then that's too petty a characteristic for me to comment on, nor is it worth you posting about)

No... I'm just fed up of...

No... Boca Juniors sucks... River Plate is awesome... kinda discussions... (Those are Argentinian Football teams)

And people who (irrationaly support) love something because it's hype and people that hate it because it's hype...

It's getting old.

I liked it. I wasn't looking for David Niven-caliber science-fiction. I was looking to spend $12 to be entertained for a few hours. And I was.

ID Software have largely been doing this exact same thing for... how many years now? It still works.

I hated Avatar because the disc was too round.
I hate Avatar because the top of the letter A in Avatar was too sharp at the top.

I enjoyed the movie. I realize it's pretty derivative, but it entertained me and that's all I can ask for.

I also thought the effects were outstanding. The young female princess alien was hot. /shrug

D9 was great, too. A bit more original. I like 'em both.
