What is this from?

Lord of the Rings.  It's either Moria or that orc tower Sam stormed into.

Lord of the Rings, movie 3. The orcs in the tower find Frodo's mithril chainmail, and the two camps of orcs turn on one another. One of the two orcs in charge was going to keep it, and the other wanted to bring it to Sauron. And as orcs are wont to do, they started a knife fight which then spiraled into the rest of the tower, ending up with almost all the orcs in the tower dead. Which actually makes it a very good analogue for a tantrum spiral.

Yeah, where all the orcs kill each other over food, so its kinda just like a tantrum spiral. Hehe.

Actually, it was a quarrel over the mithril chainmail in the movie, a more general "belongings" in the book. So it was a tantrum spiral started by an orc getting knifed over clothing. Which in this case I shall call socks.

In the book they started fighting over the prisoners, marry and pippin, but when Frodo and Sam showed up it was the last straw and they killed each other, so it's really like a tantrum spiral, long in the making yet no way to stop it.

The orcs who were fighting over Merry and Pippin were killed to the last man by the Rohirrim, though. Mordor orcs and Uruks both.

He was sniped from behind a stone when he went out to look in a pond...more like they downloaded the orc mod for the first time without releasing what it entailed.

Basically, DF is huge ripoff of LOTR:

In first book, we have adventurer discover fortress that fell to HFS and have em fight tentacle demon and spirit of fire. They on survive because they pull lever and collapse bridge.

In seccond book, we have classical "no booze, bad food, slept in rain lately" tantrum spiral on orcs which is made more fun by aproaching siege.

Then we have good old siege of helms deep which included elven trade caravan stuck inside fortress for duration of siege.

And siege of Sarumans fortress which is result of not meeting tree quota by treehuggers. Building destroyers messed up his workshops a lot and he ended up turtled behind locked door. There was tiny tantrum by Grima and he ended up hammering Mayor so hard he flew out of window and land unconscious on weapon trap, which he triggered and where he died.

There, in third book we have goblin tower fall to food/loot related tantrum spiral, which started when they discovered that their Giant Cave Spider, a spider silk farm, got killed and that adventurer that did it dropped nice *tiny chainmail* that everyone wanted. Lucky for adventurers, their butcher was on break, so they only had to wait till everyone tantrumed to death.

Tolkien was lously DF player, it is like he never started proper food industry, and his orc/goblin fortresses obviously lacked great dining halls. :-/

THERE WERE NO ELVES AT HELM'S DEEP!!!! WHAT PART OF LAST ALLIANCE OF MEN AND ELVES DO YOU NOT GET!!!! WHY THE HECK DOES HALDIR DIE, HE'S NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE THERE!!!!

/nerdrage]

Also, Saruman's not supposed to die at Orthanc, but in the Shire under similar circumstances (just getting stabbed in the back though).
