Miners Digging too deep
« on: December 21, 2009, 07:11:12 pm »

I've had it happen several times where I have my dwarfs start digging tunnels down z-levels, when suddenly they won't come back up! I've tried assigning them jobs and other things, but they won't move from their level! Does anybody know why this happens?

Do you use stairs or ramps? Ramps are really picky about under what conditions they work under.

how are you 'digging down'?  if you are using ramps then maybe you are removing the supporting wall that is needed to allow the dwarves to use the ramps to get back up?  That is the only situation I can think of that could cause what you are describing.  See the link above for ramp specifics.

Read the wiki page on Ramps.
You see, the ramps in this game mostly work like ramps in real life, the ramp cannot curve backwards the way you just drew it, you should either try stairs or learning how to correctly make ramps, which would be to make sure the dwarves can drop off on the opposite side of the ramp that they walk up(note that the opposite side of the ramp also needs to have a wall on the bottom floor... eh, just read the wiki. :) )

The last G in z-level-1 renders the ramp unusable.

Replace it with:

Or you could use up/down stairs. Those are cool.
You'd probably have to make your miner there construct some, but miners upstairs could dig up/down stairs from above.

Still, I guess it's good if you learn how ramps work. I think everyone else here covered you.

is that u an upstairs?
if so no.
If it is an upward ramp, then im not sure... dont think so as it doesnt have enough space to fit them all.

But even if it does work the animals that pull the wagon will go through the wall. ( for a second or two then be pushed up).

Mongo, you confuse me so. Your avatar is exactly the same as mine, so I look at your post and go, "Wait, I didn't say that!" until I realise that, yes, I didn't say that.

Never use ramps unless you are making a caravan pathway.  Ramps are buggy and seem to dissapear for odd reasons, and things other then merchants don't path through them properly.
