Knowing full well how these forums are, I personally have to say that if you did something bad enough to be permabanned in the first place, you shouldn't be allowed to come back.
I had a week temp-ban once.
That was horrible.

I dunno, I got week-banned once and it wasn't for anything I would consider a problem on any other forum, I was just getting pretty passionate about some argument (it was a thing worth arguing over, not like xbox vs pc or something)

But yeah, it's pretty much Toady's prerogative if he thinks the community would be better off without such and such a person. It's also unimportant to me.

Also, I wonder if he's considered banning people only from the off-topic forums and not from the DF ones? I've never seen ANYONE get mad in the on topic forums and unless someone was trolling for the sake of trolling they'd probably not do whatever it was they got banned for in the DF-subject areas.

It happens more often than you'd think.  Four of the last seven threads that ThreeToe had to moderate were in DF territory.  People get snarky in Suggestions in particular, and sometimes DF-related threads go off topic.

This is my first post on these forums and i'd like to inform you that I am not a troll. I has a suggestion. Teehee. This (insert vague description here) sucks. No really, it's terrible. I won't give any constructive criticism even though I am not a troll. Nickelback writes better code. Did I mention I'm not a troll? Toady sucks and should do (vague suggestion that is impossible) otherwise a brazillian DF players like me will quit and I'm like so concerned about the game since I am not a troll.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen posts like this.

Likewise, I've been warned before but never temp banned.

I've never even been warned, though the whole "forums going crazy" thing happened at about the same time as the "I'm not playing DF because it only makes me think about how much more awesome the next version is going to be " thing.

I don't really like permanent bans because people do change. But I don't think that we should go light on people who repeatedly ignore the rules despite many warnings. I would use year bans, though. And if they didn't change after such a long time, then I'd permaban them without a second thought. Maybe even IP ban them there.

Also, I think Toady/Threetoe don't get hostile except in response to people being openly hostile towards their decisions. At least I've only seen them do it in response to some "Toady/Threetoe are tyrants because they ban people on their forum" thread.

And finally, IndonesiaWarMinister wasn't ever really anything more than annoying. About 20% of the time, when he wasn't trying to be all like "LOOK AT ME GUYS COMMUNISM DEATH TO AMERICA RANDOM BULLSHIT", he was pretty cool, but he did that way too much.

IWM had 3476 posts. I know that not even a fraction of those posts were offensive.

internet forums are dictatorships. The admin sais how it is done, and it is done.


and you guys know that toady's admins decision are not acts of random powermegalomania, going around banning whatever and whomever he dislikes.


places like VN were closed because of massive amounts of complaints and rule violations, and we DID get warnings beforehand.


people like IWM were banned after dozens of rule violations, and also multiple warnings.

he decided not to listen, so he takes the bullet.



think of this from a law point of view.

if toady simply goes back on his word just because of popular demand, then who exactly has any incentive sticking to the rules, if there are no consequences at all ?


law enforcement needs to be especialy one thing: consequent.

it doesn't matter how hard or how fair the punishment is, but it must be consequent. One spoken, it should not be taken back, ESPECIALY not because of popular demand.


I spent 3 years as a moderator of a 1.000.000+ members huge adult forum. you know, the kind of place were no one at all cares about the rules.


being the strict person I am, my ban-count was at about 3-4 people a day, and oh god I got a lot of hate-mail, and also a lot of those popular demand things. people just rallyed their forum friends, and for weeks over weeks I got bombarded with PM that were often more than 1000 words long, containing alllll kinds of arguements.

I did not unban those people. Simply because the rules are the rules.

The desperate fuckers eventually turned to other mods, asking them to undo my work, and lenient and inconsequent as they were, they gave in.
The admin noticed that, and banned said mods.

he already got more than one second chance. he can consider himself lucky that he received a temp ban before that, and even luckier that he received so many warnings prior to his permaban.


posting on a forum is not a right, it's a privilege.
one has to earn your right to be here, not even by being a good member, but simply be NOT being a bad member.
