Couldn't Toady just ban the IP and prevent the banned person from making another account? At least that is what I've heard.

And this thread isn't probably gonna do anything about IWMs ban unless every forum member joins it.

 I think Toady said he would resort to IP bans once the person comes back and trolls under a different name. IWM has been mature about this and has not sought vengeance with the community, so he deserves it not.

Judging from this thread, many people were IWM's friends.
Also judging from this thread, many people did not like IWM.
I think it's clear that if someone breaks the rules but everyone enjoys having him/her on the forum, he should not be banned; however, as many people seem to have been annoyed by his actions, I support this ban. One part of a forum should not have to suffer for the enjoyment of another part.

Indeed, but the rules are meant for the good of the users, yes? If someone breaks the rules, but everyone wants him/her to stay, then the rules are not serving the users, and they should be changed, and the person not banned.
But that's not the case anyway, so yeah.

Depends on the rules, if he is posting racist remarks and no-one cares then the rules against racist remarks are not wrong, the people listening are.

I dont think he was that bad. Unless he was posting child pornography while I wasent looking. Im not that well updated on the fourms goings on.

Also does anyone else feel a bit uneasy about this topic? I know from experience admins arent very fond of people contesting their bans, or talking about their bans, or talking about them in general.

That post didn't come off right, he wasn't being racist (seriously anyway) that was a hypothetical situation of how the rules can be right even if no-one on the forum agrees. And I don't feel uneasy, I don't think Toady or Threetoe are likely to even warn people for discussing bans.

I wouldent be so sure, I mean they turned off the "Banned" on banned peoples names to reduce discussion of banning. That seems pretty clear to me.

Just posting here I fear I may have already dug my own grave.

I think(and could be wrong) that Toady only cares is people use the button that notifies him of issues with a post. That means that if nobody cares, who pushed the button? Someone who was bothered by it. Likely Toady waited for at least a few users to be offended.

Thus, a popular(with EVERYONE) but rule-bending forum member would have somewhat of a resistance to being banned.

Of course, I could be wrong about that, you would have to ask Toady and/or Threetoe and/or Kurtulmak(in the armok section) and/or Jonathan S. Fox(in the curses section) and they could actually tell you how much of what I assumed is actually true.

No. The rules are meant for the good of Toady and ThreeToe; people acting like this place is 4chan would turn off potential bug-reporters, suggestion-givers (which both serve to better the game, which attracts more donators), and the donators themselves (Toady's income).
