It doesn't matter if he was funny, or whose friend he was. If he repeatedly broke forum rules and ignored warnings, then he had a ban coming to him, legitimately.

The forum doesn't need more thorns in its side (or in Toady's).

I never notice these explosions until they're already gone, signature related.

I think the forums are moderated/self-moderated quite well for the amount of moderators and forum-goers. I've seen messed up crap (non-4chan standards) posted around here and all they got were warnings rather than auto-ban, so the system is fairly lenient imho. Dittos on the "they can remake an account and come back if they really cared" sentiment.

spoilers: even though a lot of us post on 4chan, this isn't 4chan, nor the place to act like 4chan. 4chan exists for a reason.

I've been to 4chan once. I can't see the appeal.

4chan used to be that place, the younger weeaboo brother of Something Awful, where a bunch of internet nerds would joke around about being racists, retarded, and pedophiles.

Somewhere along the line, people posting missed the joke and actually became racist, retarded, and pedophiles. Also anonymous legion bullshit.

EDIT: It's kind of like this. You have your favourite bar- it's filled with the same guys day after day, you don't even know their names but you joke and chill with them drunkenly over shit getting fucked up. Then slowly over time, word gets out of how awesome the bar is and it's gets filled with a combination of guidos, chavs, assholes, rednecks, pedophiles, neo-nazis, communists, hell's angels, furries, wapanese, lonely chicks trying to show you their boobs, FBI agents, and jehovah's witnesses trying to convert everyone. That's what 4chan is like.

Yeah, that all took place over maybe 6 months back 4chan was first made.  There were never any good old days.

Back to something close to the point, I was going to mention that of banned people I myself miss Yanlin.  I'm sure he would have all sorts of pithy comments about this thread, whether or not he were banned himself.  So a happy birthday to him, wherever he is.

I feel that banning should not always be permanent, since people change, but actually removing a ban should be at most a rare exception, mostly in the case of a mistake(banned the wrong person, though I doubt that happens often, if at all) or on very rare occasions where Toady(and any others) really feel that the user has actually changed, though that would probably take too much time away from DF-dev...

Still, most people who are gone now really did deserve it, and probably wouldn't change themselves even if they were given a second chance.

I can't think of anyone who got banned but didn't deserve it.  Torak wasn't that bad, but apparently he got on the animu people pretty heavy, I dunno.

I dont think I know who IWM is but I dont like permenent bans and I think that we should unban everyone who was permenent banned.
