true. imagine a forum like a house

you paid a lot of money for it, and it costs a lot of maintenance

because you like to invite many guys over to discuss dwarffortress, you open your doors and let anyone in BUT you tell them some simple rules they should abide to when in your house.

but sadly, some dudes don#t care and start breaking that rule

you have the full right to throw that guy out of your forum if you don#t want him there

Rules? Laws?

He didn't murder anyone, you CAN'T murder somone over a forum. Nor can you steal or rape. It's WORDS, being permanently cut of from your freinds and a place that you love is WAY, WAY out of proportion even for the very worst thing that is is physically POSSIBLE to do through forum posts. There are bad things that shuld have punishments, but NOTHING deserves a complete blockage.
The forum is made out of bytes, there are no resources to steal or means to permanently cripple someone, it's a post sacristy economy, all the reasons that justifies law in the real world are invalid on the net.

Like other people have been saying: Yes, yes there are reasons.

For one, this is not a publicly-run place; it is privately owned and operated, and the people who own and operate it can decide what they want done with it and who can use those resources. They have that right.

And as far as justification goes, this is a forum. It's a social environment. A privately-owned social environment where the owner/operators will want to foster a certain type of atmosphere and culture, especially when it's built around something specific (in this case, an independent game developer's website). To state an extreme, if a bunch of neonazis started using it as their local hang-out and posting threads in General Discussion about various unsavory things and acting very very mean to everyone, it would drive people away, create a hostile environment, and be significantly detrimental to the purpose of the forum.

So yes, there are justifications for having rules here. It's a private community; "free speech" applies as much here as it does in my own house, which I also would have the right to kick you or anyone else out of if you annoyed me.

I did enjoy IWM's presence, but I don't think he should be unbanned just because of it. If so, all the other "permabanned" people should be unbanned as well. If you're gonna give one guy a fresh start, at least give others a fresh start as well.

Perhaps a few months after the new DF version is out, let them enjoy DF again and talk about it, instead of picking fights with other people down here.

Honestly, I don't know of any bans here (well, ones of regular members) that I didn't see coming from a mile away, and I think that's for a reason.

I have no idea what IWM said that was his last straw, since the post was edited out, though. I'd certainly LIKE to know, but oh well.

It wasn't like a HUGE HORRIBLE POST OF BANNING.

Toady stated that he's been constantly warned and not listening.

I'm pretty sure it was something against gays, possibly burning them.  Typical IWM stuff, which is exactly why he got banned.  Like Akroma says, punishment only works if you don't go back on it when the person starts crying (Or, in this case, when others start crying.)  He was asking for it, he got it.  Even when he wasn't breaking the rules he was easily the most irritating person on the forum at the time.  Good riddance.

Fishers wanted to be banned.  He and Torak were the only banned people I liked.  Everyone else was asking for it.

The real problem was that IWM just didn't fit in very well. I think he knew this.

Quote
popular demand did nothing

it was constant harrassement that drove a single mod to act against the rules and unban someone

it was not popular demand, it were only some few very very loud and annoying voices

such as yours and tacks for example

the point did not get across, it was forced across, and everyone involved, from the mod to the harassers got banned

I assure you, popular demand did nothing, nor was there even popular demand
What stopped the mod from just banning those guys if they were harassing him?

He wouldent have done it if he dident want to, its as simple as that. Its just silly to say that a moderator had no control over the situation.

You used the banning of the mod to prove how popular demand did nothing. You cant change your story like that by suddenly making the mod a victim of some sort of harassment.

I get the feeling Cowofdoom doesn't have any great desire to see IWM unbanned, and is just doing his "Let's argue with everyone" thing again.

I'm not going to reply to cow, he's just trolling, but this seems too over the top to be a troll. Just because a person likes the forum very much, it does not mean they can repeatedly post goatse on it. While it's a slight exaggeration, the point is that there are some things that need a permaban.

Hahaha, you're going to be so disappointed when you're 60 years old and brain uploading still hasn't been invented.
