We might have to face more people being unbanned because of this. I personally haven't seen what he has written, but it was obvious it was annoying more than a few people, since I doubt Toady comes down here much other than moderation reasons.

If we unban IWM, someone who hasn't learned the first time around, then how many other people will have to be unbanned? Is it worth the risk of doing so? Ultimately, what do we gain from this?

It's a shame he was banned, but a permaban really should be a permanent ban.

Agreed, if a permanent ban can be circumvented than what threat is it to any potential trouble makers?

As far as I know, this forum's software just shuts off an accounts ability to post.  If IndonesiaWarMinister wanted to keep posting here (he was even still changing the signature in his banned account for a while) he could.  Probably even still named IndonesiaWarMinister if he dared, with that weird double-naming loophole.

The point is, there is no such thing as "unbanning" because IWM could rejoin the forum at any time.  That he hasn't is a good sign that he took the hint from getting banned (which is exactly the point) that his behavior was more than Toady specifically was willing to tolerate.  And rather than just change his act like he should have in the first place he has instead just stayed away.

Those of you who think "the rules" should slacked to reallow his exact same behavior should learn from his example.

If you hated him you wouldn't want him back would you? Simply having lots of friends on the forum is no reason to loosen the rules for anyone.
