RantingRodent's Tileset for ASCII Loyalists [Updated to 2.0]
« on: December 19, 2009, 03:57:07 pm »

I meant to get this done much earlier than this, but better late than never. I have applied my changes to the stones and ores, and used more symbolic tiles for them so that they fit in better with the vanilla tiles. I also adapted my levers and used my water tiles. I used the Guybrush-modifed version of Herrbdog's tileset as my basis. I also used a couple of characters from Nostalgia's 8x8 set for the Layer minerals.

This tileset requires the removal of accented characters (included) and is best viewed with one of the Natural colour sets.

DFFD: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=1694

Here is an explanation of the various stone tiles.

I have made a couple of improvements that I intend to port back to the graphical version:

Fuel ores and Magma-safe ores no longer share a tile.
Since it is the only mineral in which Diamonds can be found, I've given Kimberlite its own tile.

This is the colour scheme I am currently using:

This looks interesting: to be able to see the layer's value by glance.

Can you show a screenshot please?

I like the design of gems + dots indicating their value, however I don't like Ii and such, if you could go with some symbols or type of grid it would be better. Also a gem with a solid line under it isn't looking good en masse, you'd better make a gem in center and four dots around it instead.

Does that actually matter?  The layer stones have almost no variation. If there's any that deserve to be identified seperately, let me know and I'll do something about it. I have a lot of tiles to work with.

I'll figure out something else for the layer stones though, if the diacritics aren't good enough.

Yeah, some of the layer stones should be different. Marble for an example is worth differentiating from the rest and the flux sedimentary layers should appear different as well. Kiberlite itself is not worth an separate icon and maybe the ores should be kept apart from non-ore valuable stones especially for modding purposes. In fact, modders would appreciate one or two icons for stone that isn't valuable or an ore itself, but does play a role in reactions and thus should be differentiated from the rest.

P.S. Good idea, I wonder why none else thought of this before. Keep it up.

My thought there is that when you're mining, you'll want to mine-out any Kimberlite deposits you run into immediately, in case there are diamonds inside.

I like this, especially the classification of gems based on worth and the tiles for non-standard rocks/ore. It helps make mining slightly more intuitive, and now I don't have to go to the wiki as often.

Though, I do share the same thoughts with Deon. The highest value gems/ore should have a row of 4 dots instead of a solid line. Also, I'm not a fan of using letters to describe layers.. spotting creatures that share the same letters (M and S) would require a little more effort.

Like I said, this is definitely a good step towards making DF more intuitive for those of us who are not well versed in rocks, gems, and all things earthen dwarven.

I'm having trouble fitting 4 dots in properly, almost done. The next version will include a seperate tile for Flux stones and icons instead of letters for the layers.

Question:
Should I just use the layer tiles from my main graphical mod? I avoided them because I felt that the really graphical look would be out of place with ASCII.

Almost ready to release a new version.  Here is a summary of the current tiles.

Once the mod is done I will release an easy-to-merge version of the tileset which contains only the new stone tiles. You should be able to easily paste it on top of your favourite tile set, as long as there are no conflicts.

One thing you might want to add is a tile for obsidian, since it can mean magma, it's more valuable, and it's [sharp].

Obsidian is magma-safe, right? Since there are only two magma-safe minerals in vanilla, you know if it's red, it's bauxite, and if it's dark grey, it's obsidian.

no.  not any more than any natural stone or constructed object, anyway.  obsidian mechanisms will melt.

Hadn't actually checked yet, thanks. I'm hesitant to add too many special cases right now - the idea is to reduce the number of categories you need to recognize.

That being said, there should be an icon for [SHARP] ores. Obsidian is actually of rather low value, so it was just using the default layer tile. No longer.
