Does magma drain out of the sides of the map?
« on: December 19, 2009, 03:53:06 pm »

I plan on making a river of magma, but that will be a problem if the magma will just end up draining off the side of the map.

If my recollection serves me correctly, magma does not flow off the edge of the map.

Confirmed; that's just water.

I think carving fortifications on the edge drains it.

No, I don't think carving fortifications at the edge does anything either. Magma just doesn't flow off the map, period.

It's the truth.  The wiki has this, and it's been confirmed.

Heh, so that's how I was able to fill an edge valley 5 z-levels full of magma. Man that lagged so hard.

Water drains off the edge of the map just fine.

Magma never drains off the edge of the map. Ever.

I wanted to have a fortress without a meeting zone, but my dorfs would keep on wandering to the edge of the map and being eaten by goblins.

So as a workaround I flooded the world with magma.   :D

Lava doesn't drain, ergo we must fill the map entirely with lava by milking a magma pipe...

You could eventually create a pillar of obsidian, and then carve your fortress from that obsidian tower dominating the landscape.

Fill the map with magma. Pour water on the magma to make obsidian, then repeat for each layer. You will need a brook and a magma pipe for this of course. Be sure to construct floors over the brook to protect it from the magma.

Also, it would be amazingly effective at keeping immigrant nobles away.   :D

Or you could just give them a balcony.
