Mormon Dwarves
« on: December 18, 2009, 06:06:18 pm »

This was one of my migrant families some time after the first year (Now in my 4th). With the rise in births, I noticed one particular family kept having kids.

They just added the 6th to their family.

On a side note, the Mayor turned into an adult only the previous year, shortly before he was elected.

Have any of you had this strange anomaly occur?

Which anomaly? Dwarves having big families is nothing new.

Once a couple is married, they will have a baby a year, forever, unless either someone dies, or the mother miscarries.

It's actually quite common for fortress-grown dwarves to become mayor. Because they have so few jobs to do, they spend a much higher proportion of their time socialising, so they get epic stats from social skill levels, and a lot of friends. The latter is thought to help a dwarf's chances at mayorhood.

EDIT: Sometimes they can have more than one baby a year, in the form of twins or triplets, but this is quite rare.

See, I did not know this. I just noticed how 6 of the 13 children in my fortress were from the same family, and how each of the other families only have one or two.

Further clarification: by 'someone' I mean one of the parents. If it's the father, presumably one more baby will be born, but I don't know. Also, I might have implied with my last post that a miscarriage will put an end to all of that dwarf's potential children. AFAIK, this is not the case.

Theoretically, you can get two singles every odd set of years. I think that it is 1.25 Dwarves a year.

Sonerohi: Are you sure it's a 9-month gestation period? Dwarves are, after all, a seperate species.

Hmm... Someone should find the average time it takes for a baby to arrive after a marriage. Then maybe we would have a better idea of this.

I don't think that it's unreasonable to assume that the mother becomes pregnant as soon as she is married, given the nature of spores.

My dwarves almost never have babies! I think having no food/booze/sleep/happiness shortages is making them sterile. Having a tantrum is central to proper dwarven procreation.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

You might have the adult/child ratio capped. Check you init file for the child cap.

Or, if that proves uneliable, the average time period between children.

good luck tracking the miscarages, last I checked, the game only anounces births. sure it shows up in their thoughts page but, AFAIK, the only way to find out if the mother's even pregnant is when the kid is born.

Not Mormon, because I'm pretty sure if you check any of their profiles it will say "Needs alcohol to get through the working day."

The minimum, rather.
