From "Angroshs Kinder" Das schwarze Auge Zwergenhandbuch - (Angrosh Children, the dark eye, german pen&paper, dwarven handbook):
"Elves!? Their men dont wear beards, and their women bathe nacked to lure you into the water and drown you. Thank Angrosh they are as ugly as the day and all big and skinny."

I agree he deserves something special at least. All hail Toady for being amazingly dedicated :) But he might not actually want to take a break :P He'll take a hiatus when he feels he needs one - and he knows what he needs better than anyone.

Some people just thrive on working with a particular skill, and don't get worn down easily by it. For them, working on a project someone else might think of as difficult and grueling is very satisfying. Writing, painting, research, programming, making music... I think (though I could be wrong) Toady is like that. It seems like he'd have to be that sort of person to pull off a project like DF. If he didn't love making games he'd be doing something else by now.

In any case, I admire him for how far he's taken everything. Truly an inspiration.

Keep in mind that there'll probably be a week or two of urgent bugfixing after the release.  Also, he'll be reclaiming his month-end breaks (weekend days clumped at the end of the month).  My guess is that he'll finish fixing bugs right around the end of January, just in time for an 8-10 day break.

Maybe he'll catch up on the month-end project, as it got suspended when he decided to get this release out as soon as he could.

But then, life was also easier when I was running around here pretending to be a man, so I guess I should just "man up" and get back to work.

Yeah, he's taken a break before when he needed one. I recall some sort of fossil-digging excursion that made me quite jealous.

*Signs*

By all means take a break, seriously!

Anyone remember when Toady used to take those? I am starting to forget.

Probably whenever you needed him to pull a lever.

Also, signed.

Why would Toady need a petition to do something he can decide on his own? Not like there's anyone behind toady pointing a gun to his head while he codes anyway.

Hmm, wouldn't donations make more sense as a way to "encourage" Toady to take a break aka vacation? At least most people I know don't go on vacation unless they can afford to do it. Just sayin'. Still, I am all for hearing Toady (and other Indy Devs) are healthy, hearty, and happy.

While I agree that toady deserves a break since he worked so hard on this, but we really shouldn't (and can't) force one on him.

After the 3d release he took a one- or two-week vacation, I don't recall for sure. After that I don't remember if he took another, as he usually worked on his other project. He deserves a break for sure; if he wants to take it is his call, not ours.

He doesn't need a petition but I take this thread as more of a humorous thank you to Toady then a "Hey, your taking a break whether you like it or not"
