How does spleen = depression?

This is by the ancient four humors theory of medicine/psychology.  Basically, different bodily fluids got associated with different emotions, so that if you had too much of some emotion running around, it was because you had too much of the associated fluid in your body.  This led to a lot of stupid bloodletting and such, as you might imagine.

For the specific example,

spleen -> black bile -> melancholy,

but

gallbladder -> yellow bile -> rage.

I was reading a book which referred to "crossing yourself" and it took me ages to work out that was what it meant.  I was imagining a sortof kung fu type pose up until when I realised.

Also, shoulders/ naval is "eastern style", apparently.  At least according to one of my friends, anyway.
