Yeah... Even if they are gentle, I'm sure it's possible to piss one off...

I've heard stories of Beavers

The oddest story I've heard of Beavers is that they had the ability to chew through arms... but that claim just seems rediculous.

Just as a side note: given the lack of graphics in DF, it could be quite confusing when i run across, for example, a spiny squirrel. What with the fantasy aspect of the game, some people will think that the squirrel has deadly spines when its actually quite harmless, i think.

Yeah, that name is a little problematic.  However, the next version has a DESCRIPTION tag for creatures, where you can put a paragraph that can be viewed in-game.  People can use that to get a quick overview of any unfamiliar creatures, so it should be fine.

That DESCRIPTION tag should be important, especially to differentiate between subspecies if we have them.

I personally am not laying claim to any of these animals, I'm just listing animals that I think should be included.  It's a good place to start.  It probably doesn't make sense to start claiming animals this early on.

We need Poison Dart Frogs, but there are around 250 species, so everyone pick your favourites and we'll include them. Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS

Not sure if it's been corrected yet, but a Kakapo? An Australian animal? C'mon. And there hasn't been any River Dolphins in this part of the world for thousands of years.

Anyway, to help contribute, here's a big ass list of creatures I created for an Ice Age-ish mod for DF that I released once, and then never got around to updating again. A full list of creatures (all 164 of them) follows, then a link to the raws for them (that of course will have to be updated for the next version, but hey, it's a start) A few of them could be reused, and I've tried to name them as generically as possible (for instance, the Tasmanian Devil becomes the Marsupial Devil, things like that)

List of animals:

Albatross, Alligator, Ambush Leech, Anteater, Arch Wasp, Armadillo, Auroch, Bark Toad, Bearwolf, Bird-Eating Locust, Blind Cave Spider, Bloodseek Ape, Blue Crab, Bonecrush Snake, Burnskin Tadpole, Carnivorous Kangaroo, Carrion Hen, Cave Bear, Cave Dolphin, Cave Hyena, Cave Lion, Cave Wolf, Cavehaunt Spider (Megabeast) Crocodile, Crunch Grub, Diprotodon, Dire Mammothman (Demon), Duck, Echidna, Elephant Bird, Elephant Tortoise, Elk, Emperor Crocodile (Megabeast), Fell Ape (Demon), Fin-Backed Whale, Firebite Snake, Flamingo, Forest Sulking Bear, Fork-Horned Deer, Four Tusked Elephant, Giant Anteater, Giant Armadillo, Giant Echidna, Giant Elk, Giant Ground Sloth, Giant Hawk Moth, Giant Koala, Giant Long-Necked Rhino, Giant Monitor Lizard, Giant Short-Faced Kangaroo, Giant Spider Crab, Giant Squid, Giant Tadpole, Giant Tree Frog, Giant Turtle, Goat, Great Horned Sheep, Great Sun Auroch (Megabeast), Greater Cave Ape, Ground Parrot, Ground Sloth, Grounded Swan, Hare, Heartsteal Bat, Heron, Hoe Tusked Elephant, Hoofed Wolf, Horned Plains Horse, Horse-Ape, Hulking Forest Ape, Hulking Penguin, Hyena, Hyrax, Imperial Steppe Mammoth (Megabeast), Kangaroo, Koala, Lake Squid, Lesser Sabretooth Cat, Long-Necked Antelope, Long-Necked Camel, Long-Snouted Otter, Lurking Owl, Mammoth, Mammothkin Gnome, Marsupial Ape, Marsupial Devil, Marsupial Lion, Marsupial Striped Dog, Marsupial Tapir, Mastodon, Moa, Moleman, Muck Crab, Oceant, Ox Bird, Pack Shark, Pale King Shark, Pelican, Pig, Pig Millipede, Pig Slug, Platypus, Possum, Pygmy Dawn Horse, Pygmy Mammoth, Pygmy Penguin, Pygmy Pig, Rampage Centipede, Rampant Cloudbird (Megabeast), Regal Grasshopper, Regal Lobster, Resplendent Butterfly, Rhino Spider, River Dolphin, River Shark, Rock Wallaby, Sabretooth Cat, Sandskin Gnome, Sawtooth Dolphin, Screech Bat, Sea Widow, Sea Wolf Whale, Seagull, Shadowed Vulture, Shaggy Boar, Shore Bear, Short Faced Bear, Short-Trunked Camel, Shovel Tusker, Smouldering Coalbeast (Demon), Spike-Faced Rhino, Stalking Weaver, Striped Horse, Striped Sea Snake, Striped Swamp Cat, Swamp Wallaby, Swoop Bee, Tarskin Dolphin, Terror Bird, Three Toed Horse, Thunder Bird, Tiny Hoofed Camel, Toxodon, Tree Kangaroo, Tusked Water Deer, Tusked Whale, Undersaur, Underworm, Vulture Mosquito, Wading Snake, Walking Wolf Snake, Wandering Crab, Weasel, Whale, Wolf, Wolf Ant Larvae, Wolf Ant Royalty, Wolf Ant Soldier, Wolf Crocodile, Wombat, Woolly Rhino, Worldback Whale (Megabeast), Worm Snake, Yellow Crested Penguin

And here are the raws. Warning, Ecksbawks huge. And public domain, GPL, MIT, whatever, all that nonsense.
