Like dinosaurs, they'd be better off as a side project, likely.

I'm thinking roughly two side projects -- one for dinosaurs, one for Pleistocene animals.  And yeah, the Pleistocene creatures in particular would fit into DF very well.  I think Toady even mentioned ground sloths specifically as something he'd like to include.

Some animals we jus *need*, they shuld also have giant varities, borglemen and usable in the spoiler stuff:

* various nudibranch (seaslugs), and nudibranchmen
* Mantis shrimp (giant mantis shrimp should be *deadly*)
* tardigrades (water bears) (even the vermin kind might be "huge tardigrade")
* coconut crab
* star nosed mole
* naked mole rat
* bombardier beetle (material breath very hot liquid!)
* Onychophor (Velvet worm) (These are awesome! Also, they spit glue as a weapon! if toady made the name (just name, not behavior) of the GCS web attack customizabe it'd work perfectly)
* whip scorpion/vinegarroon
* sunfish
* nemertea (ribbon worms)
* crinoid (sea lilies)
* Amblypygi (whip spiders)
 
* Liopleurodon (ex) (these are freking hardcore)
* Glyptodont (lately ex) (DF will NOT be complete until it has these, think stegosaurus, but 10 times the awesome and probably lived alongside humans.)
* carnivorous kangaroo (ex) (cant remember the real name, lived in australia long ago, ferocious)

Lol, the cambrian explosion critters ought to be fun :) Although they are all sea critters and there are alot of arthropods.

Heh, I was about to suggest the Hyrax.  Cat-sized rodent-looking critters related to elephants?  Yes please!

* Bushpig
* Bearded Pig <--- VERY DWARFY! ACTUALLY HAS A BEARD!
* Red River Hog
* Domestic Pig (Can just call it a Pig)
* Giant Forest Hog <--- Since we may have giant versions of animals anyway, may just want to call these "Forest Hogs".
* Warthog

Warthogs already exist in DF.

Some Miscellaneous Ideas-

Reindeer (dwarfmasy)
Megaladon (giant extinct shark)
Anaconda (non venomous snake that wrestles well)
Chihuahua- dogs that make for lousy war companions, but cheap
Rottweiler- big strong dog used for combat (i imagine the current dogs are already of this breed, but maybe not)
Narwhal (they have a horn!!!)

How are we doing on spiders? Now that venoms are coming out, having a mess of spiders and giant spiders would be a good thing.

Hey!  Sounds like fun.  I have a question: I know that you guys want realistic animals at this point, not pure fantasy.  BUT, what if I want to code a giant version of a creature that is normally only vermin sized? 

Even though a giant crab or whatever is not realistic, having a code for crabs with fully defined limbs, tissue, etc etc. would be useful to the game IMHO because it could be used as copy pasta to generate giant monsters critters with crab-like attributes, and possibly crab-men, etc.  What do you think?

I think there is a tag that allows the game to use the creature for a "huge" creature variation.  That is totally acceptable and fun!

Here's what I am not sure about- for instance a toad is a vermin sized critter, so unlike a "full sized" creature, its object data describes where it spawns, how fast it swims, whether or not it can be hated, etc., but it does not describe its limbs or body shape as far as I can tell. 

So if I want to create a "crab" animal and map out its anatomy including shell, body parts, etc., would it have to be a assigned an actual size?  (I believe vermin don't have size, beyond the vermin tag which ensures they are tiny)  Would that make it impossible to also be a vermin-class creature or catchable fish?  Perhaps I would need to create the vermin version of crab, then a separate generic version of a crab with assigned size and body parts and so on?

I suppose I should try to understand the raws better, but I guess it's a good idea to get this straight before I agree to take this one.

I'm thinking I'd like to create detailed data for a few generic crustaceans: crab, lobster/crayfish, mantis shrimp, assuming these are not in the next release!

Miscellaneous lists of creatures aren't going to be very helpful until/unless we get to a fill-in-the-gaps stage.  Right now, the emphasis needs to be on breadth and coherence.

Anyway, here's some rodents!  The rats and mice aren't exhaustively represented -- their families are huge and kind of boring.  I doubt anyone will mind.

Next up: lagomorphs.  I should note here that the pika, which is listed in the OP as a rodent, is in fact a lagomorph.

Oops, I missed this.  Vermin don't have body definitions in the current version, but they do in the next version, at least optionally.  This is important, as it allows giant forms of that creature to show up as semi-megabeast type things.  There may also be vermin size definitions.  So do plan to include those.

Basically Vermine body definition is very useful incase anything happened with it.

So if there were a Cockroachwoman it would need to have Cockroach body data to work.

In the same line if a creature were to take the head of a mouse it would need its bodydata as well.

Rule of thumb is anything smaller then a small dog is Vermin

Just as a side note: given the lack of graphics in DF, it could be quite confusing when i run across, for example, a spiny squirrel. What with the fantasy aspect of the game, some people will think that the squirrel has deadly spines when its actually quite harmless, i think.

They are the worlds largest living Rodent

They are also apperantly gentle enough to be approached.
