All this stuff sounds cool all right.

I was thinking of making an attempt at modding in the alien critters from Barlowe's Expedition book, if I have time considering that I'll have my days full from college classes starting January 25th. However, since this is based on real animals, yea its moot as far as this project goes.

its moot as far as this project goes.
Fun fact: Moot is defined as "open to argument or debate"

Mammoth sounds reasonable to me. They're significantly different from elephants, and would make a useful hunting target for those settling in icy areas, as well as good challenge to those daft dwarves who insist on settling in haunted glaciers.

Greiger's is actually correct...  sadly enough.  The emotional circumstance processor is still turned on, with a randomly rolled up personality, but they can't express themselves or take control...  they can only cry.

Finding a lot of this info is rather difficult. I am trying to add onto the "Large birds" list that you apperantly wanted but for the most part I cannot remember what those Ostritch-like birds are called. (I DID find a Giant Ostritch!)

Anyhow before I continue Ill open up my Guiness Book and find the animal section an research that.

Question: Are all Era allowed for animals? You already have "Extinct" animals.
Also are animals that are extinct but alive in the medieval ages not considered extinct? Such as the Passanger Pidgeon (I think that was its name)

Hey!  Sounds like fun.  I have a question: I know that you guys want realistic animals at this point, not pure fantasy.  BUT, what if I want to code a giant version of a creature that is normally only vermin sized?

Even though a giant crab or whatever is not realistic, having a code for crabs with fully defined limbs, tissue, etc etc. would be useful to the game IMHO because it could be used as copy pasta to generate giant monsters critters with crab-like attributes, and possibly crab-men, etc.  What do you think?

Otherwise... not sure what I want to work on.  I'll think of something...

I think there is a tag that allows the game to use the creature for a "huge" creature variation.  That is totally acceptable and fun!

I can't find my Guiness book so I guess Ill have to do my research manually.

Though I guess searching "The World's Most Poisonous Bird" can't be too tough.

Maybe I should include a Special Giant Spider (sort of) that has specific Bloodcells whos job is to suicide against germs.

The thing is that I was talking about ALIEN creatures while the Ark Project is about Earth creatures, both living and extinct, which is what I meant as far as moot. But hey, if Rainseeker wants to include alien critters in the Ark project, okay.

Heh, I was about to suggest the Hyrax.  Cat-sized rodent-looking critters related to elephants?  Yes please!

And since I'm a Jew, here's a list of our most maligned animals... swine.

Swine
* Pygmy Hog
* Bushpig
* Bearded Pig <--- VERY DWARFY! ACTUALLY HAS A BEARD!
* Red River Hog
* Domestic Pig (Can just call it a Pig)
* Giant Forest Hog <--- Since we may have giant versions of animals anyway, may just want to call these "Forest Hogs".
* Warthog

And to make up for that, something more Kosher.

Sheep
* Argali
* Domestic Sheep (Can just call it a Sheep)
* Mouflon
* Urial
* Bighorn Sheep
* Dall Sheep
* Snow Sheep

There's another category you might want to put in there, for bears.
Ursidae (the bear's family)
I had a quick look and found some cool stuff.
Cave Bears - "The cave bear had a very broad, domed skull with a steep forehead. Its stout body had long thighs, massive shins and in-turning feet, making it similar in skeletal structure to the brown bear." Extinct

Arctodus Bear - The Arctodus Bear was one of the largest terrestrial carnivores of it's day.They would have stood about 1.6 m (5.3 ft) at the shoulder (on all fours), 3.4 m (11 ft) upright and may have weighed about 550 kg (1200 lb). Extinct.

You've also got your Giant Panda (the adorable ones we all know and love) and the Dwarf Panda (extinct) which was about half the size as a normal one.

Brown bears, Grizzly bear, Kodiak bear, Black bear, Sun bear (which are the smallest of all currently living bears) and a few more that have rather place-specific names.

I compiled a list of venomous snakes.  Then, after noticing the list was FREAKING HUGE, I cut it down to these that I think will be useful for DF, but still pretty diverse.

Elapids (Cobras)
   Najas
      * Snouted Cobra
      * Spitting Cobra
      * Forest Cobra
   * Water Cobra
   * Coral Snake
   * Tree Cobra
   * Burrowing Cobra (aka Many-Banded Snake, which sounds like an awesome name)
   * King Cobra
   * False Water Cobra
   Mambas
      * Green Mamba (less aggressive)
      * Black Mamba (very aggressive)
   * Copperhead
   * Krait

Vipers
   Pit Vipers
      * Moccasin
      * Jumping Pitviper
      * Palm Pitviper
      * Forest Pitviper
      * Lancehead
      * Hundred-Pace Pitviper (aka Snorkle Viper)
      * Bushmaster
      * Rattlesnake
      * Temple Viper
   * Night Adder
   True Vipers
      * Bush Viper
      * Puff Adder
      * Horned Viper
      * Desert Viper
      * Asp
      * Rock Viper
      * Meadow Viper

Colubrids (Rear-Fanged)
   * Boomslang
   * Tree Snake
   * Vine Snake / Whip Snake
   * Cat Snake
   * Mangrove Snake

We need some more sea creatures!  I guess I'll sign up to try to make some jellyfish.  Unless I am mistaken, the only jellyfish currently in the game is the Sea Nettle Jellyfish.

I chose the following jellyfish for their memorable names/effects/visual recognizability.

Cnidarians - Shallow/beach
  * Man Of War
  * Box Jellyfish
  * Lion's Mane Jellyfish
  * Crown Jellyfish (technically a classification, but a small one)

I salute you, Fieari.  I almost attempted the snakes, but god there are so many.  You inspired me to take on some non-venomous ones:

Pythons

Boas

Also a couple extra venomous snakes I thought worthy of inclusion:

What about ancient mammals? They generally seem to be very "fun"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entelodont
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_sloth
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terror_birds
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indricotherium

etc

Like dinosaurs, they'd be better off as a side project, likely.
