It depends on the setting. In the setting I just described, those with even the slightest bit of aptitude are trained as warrior-mage-assassins from a young age. Their job was originally to watch over humanity, but a civil war and an uprising later they now aim to cripple it, and make sure the pesky humans run themselves into the ground. It's WAY down the sliding scale of cynicism vs. idealism, so fights abound.

Kind of. More like a different caste - technically, they're humans, but after the war they became very elitist.

As for the war, the humans don't even know anything about it - it happened entirely by accident.
