What, give him credit for paying people with talent to produce the only slightly redeeming aspect of his movies?

You clearly have no idea what a director does.

I'm pretty sure Footkerchief's referring to the CG. Which was pretty darn good.

I know, and if he's suggesting that the Director has nothing to do with the CG, then he clearly doesn't know what the Director does.

Oh, I don't mean to slight him.  There were moments in that movie where it was clear that the guiding hand of Michael Bay was the driving force behind the CG.  I'm thinking specifically of that Xbox robot.

Speaking of bad movies (because Transformers is a bad movie), I'm currently watching a 70-minute demolition of The Phantom Menace and it is awesome.

The Director is the person who decides what is actually going to happen. All the animators do is what the Director tells them to do.

Well, he obviously had no part of the design or animation process itself.

Also, his action scenes hurt my eyes.

Actually he would have had quite a major hand in the design process, ovbiously he didn't do the animation personally, but he did choreograph what the animators were supposed to do.

President Truman didn't personally invade Germany, did he? Nor did he personally drop nukes on Japan.

You don't get to blame the leader for the bad things, and then not give him credit for the good things.

What are you talking about? That's the entire point of politics.

But I obviously can't see Michael Bay saying, "Let's have Megatron be a sort of monstrous toothy thingy". That seems more like a Steven Spielberg thing to do. Then again, I haven't read much about Michael Bay.

Have you? Because you seem to be speaking with the VOICE OF AUTHORITY!!!

Michael Bay would have okayed every single design decision that was made. He might not have personally said "Hey, lets make Megatron a toothy thing", but when the design was presented to him, he liked it. If he didn't like it he would have said what he would have liked to be changed, and the artists would have gone back and changed it until he liked it.

You seem to be vastly underestimating just how much control the Director has over a movie, especially big name Directors like Michael Bay.

I think I am. Well, it's more because I was under the impression that being "hands-on" was more of an old-time director thing (which is why I brought up Steven Spielberg).

... big name Directors like Michael Bay.

As a 30 yr old male from the UK, this statement confused me (Michael who?) ... so I looked up :

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000881/

Interesting, that list is full of (no more than) semi-entertaining drivel

(I suppose 'The Rock' would be the highlight?)

He's probably made some studios a load of money though.

It varies from director to director, some are very hands on, some are not. Generally the more famous the director, the more hands on he is.

It should be apparant from the common themes underlying Michael Bay's work that he's pretty hands on. But Mr. Bay is actually pretty hands on even by those standards. Michael Bay really gets into the nitty gritty stuff, he's just one of those Directors that loves to get in there with his crew, and apparantly he's pretty fun to work with too. But then again, if you think about the kind of mind that would be behind Transformers, that would probably be a pretty fun mind to work with.

mendonca, how exactly would you define 'Big Name Directors'?

Look, if his idea of a joke is "giant wrecking ball testicles", then probably I wouldn't enjoy his company.

It was amusing on a childish level, you have to admit.

And i can honostly say that mendonca is the first person i've ever met who hasn't heard of Michael Bay.

The point Vester is making, is that it's all quite unserious.

Throw this man a couple million dollars to pump out lame pop culture with lots of exploding metal computer generated pieces and he calls it a movie.

Unfortunately, some people also call it a movie.

These are the people who wasted nine dollars to see the thing.

Yup.

And the visuals in Transformers 1 and 2 only look really good when they aren't moving. When an action or fight scene starts, it's really hard to tell what's happening. Which may be his stylistic choice, but it's still a pain to watch.
