Nah, we aren't all that Americanised.  But we don't go around wearing big signs on our heads saying "BRITISH!".

That's what I'm talking about with Children of Men.  I get that British people don't act and sound like Americans, and I'm pretty sure I could tell one from the other.  The people making that movie (they were probably American movie execs themselves) apparently thought Americans were too stupid to realize they weren't just watching snooty people and had to really limey the movie up for the first 15 minutes to make it obvious.

That's kind of weird, considering it was a Ritz type movie (the Ritzes are the theaters in Philly that show foreign and indie movies) where the audience would be smart enough to know what Britain is

In reply to Footkerchief, I really, really enjoyed Children of Men, and would say that anyone who likes movies should definitely see it.

I agree, it gave me chills.

That reminds me of Vantage Point, which is supposed to take place in Spain, and is filmed wholly in Mexico. I'm unsure as to rate it as a bad movie or an extremedly long  advertisement for a videocamera

I watched 'Anchorman' (for the first time) last night. Skipped through the final 18 scenes, so on the bright side I managed to watch it in 15 minutes.

I think it might have been because everyone had been telling me for years how good it was, they forget to say that the humour was very obvious.

I went in expecting a minor degree of wit and was just hit in the face with a fish.

Also I knew all the jokes because they had (unbenkownst to me) been recycled to me over the last few years in various social situations by my (clearly unimaginative) friends.

I would suspect it could be quite funny, but I also suspect I should have watched it a few years ago, and also maybe after a few beers, with a few friends.

Will Ferrell is clearly a very funny guy, but I was just a bit ambivalent about it all. Steve Carell's character took the biscuit for me, "I ate a red candle" (or something) being the least funny line I saw (yeah we get it, he's a bit slow). Again, I have a lot of love for Steve Carell, but last night, in this film, I was underwhelmed.

Maybe it goes to show you should go and see (ultra) successful comedies such as this one early on, so you don't hit it 3 (or 5?) years later when lesser comedians have recyced the jokes to death?

Well, mechas can have a purpose if you don't make them too big and use them in rough or urban terrain because that's where they are at an advantage over other vehicles. They are thinner and shorter as tanks to it's easier to hide one behind a corner, they can maneuver through thick woods with lots of obstructions on the ground and they can climb, which is a definite advantage in cities and mountains. Tracked vehicles can't really deliver an AA gun to the top of a building unless it's a parking lot.

Oh God, Children of Men.  I went to see that with my father, because we liked the previews.  After about twenty minutes we wanted our money back, but watched the whole thing for the laughs of it.  The last few minutes were cool, but I just have a thing for war movies.  The rest of it was a quintessentially British (or at least British feeling) Room With A View And A Staircase And A Pond type movie, attempting to tell some weird Blade Runner shit and falling all over itself.

I don't remember if it was actually made by an English film company, but being in Texas, when it got to the point where the Pink Floyd blimp was floating by I exclaimed aloud "alright, we get it already, they're British."  The theater burst into laughter.

Wait, what? The flaw you found in the movie was that it was -too- british? That's racism!

I thought the movie was okay, and didn't really notice any extra unneeded "limey"ness. Of course, I'm Canadian, and take everything at face value, lest someone think I'm intolerant.

One thing i liked, and found interesting about the movie was the repeated christian symbolism. The baby born in a barn, and the terrorists using the name 'fishes' just like early underground christians. It's also interesting that the woman representing Mary was black, which I figure is controversial to some christians.

I read about something similar in the New Scientist.  Apparently the suits would be mainly for monitoring the health and fitness of soldiers, though (heart rates, stress levels, injuries and so on).

Robots do have a future in warfare (indeed, there are already drones and bomb disposal bots) but probably not in a fully humanoid form.

I watched Avatar yesterday, and to be honest, I was impressed. Perhaps I missed the hype or something, but it was the best film I've seen in quite a while.

Hmm I'm not really sure where ye saw that (when I think about it there may have been something like that in the popular science magazines) but I know theres like an exoskeleton thats in testing phase right now that definetly boosts the strength of the user. Examples of use would be quicker loading/unloading of convoys and if they can figure out how to mount armor then it could be used in combat. Unfortunatly I don't recall if I've the link for it.

It's probably a different project then.  The one I saw could be ready for military use in roughly 10 years (but isn't wildly exciting, in many ways).

I saw it this after-noon, It was a good movie, though not very original.

Unfortunately I saw it in 3d, first time I went to a 3d movie. my eyes watered the first 5 minutes, but were fine after that through the movie. However, as soon as I left the theatre, I was slammed by a horrific migraine by the time I reached my car. I can only blame the 3d as my only known migraine trigger is driving towards the sun.
