« on: December 17, 2009, 04:21:39 am »

i would like to know on what size maps people play. The reason behind their decision and the must have features they have on them.

I use a 6x6 maps with a magma pipe, river, flux and is flat. (I build city forts)

Just started a 16x16 map to see what I could cook up.

Has every feature EXCEPT Lake and Ocean and Aquifer and other town...

Is it not super slow playing on a 16x16 map?

-EDIT-

And whats so masochistic about 6x6 maps?

I'm getting 100+ FPS constant, I get weird spikes here and there, but it doesn't bug me.

Low FPS. Of course, I like to play maps with lots of z-levels... my current (6x6) map has 138 z-levels.

You just kinda find em... Normally you need to have "extreme cliffs" on the embark area. Maybe for 2 tiles would make that more so.

Just gotta get used to looking for em, I haven't seen anything extreme like that with a tiny mountain that you can cover with a 16x16 map like mine, I only have 50 on mine. You'll be connected to a mountain range most likely.

I play on various locations from 3x3 to 6x6. Usually 5x5 though as it seems to provide the best size/fps ratio.

Seems to be the way with things on this forum; if an invention doesn't involve death by magma then you know someone's going to go out of their way to make sure it does involve death by magma... then it gets acknowledged as being a great invention.

I'm about to start on a 1x3 for the sake of my FPS.

I start on maps as small as the available features will allow me. Usually no smaller than 3x4.

My forts tend to expand vertically and utilize the areas in the sky, so x/y dimensions are less important than z-levels.

Usually between 2x2 to 4x4, to save my FPS.

Features, always depends on what I intend to do.  A challenge fort might be low timber and no magma.  I avoid flowing water if I want a large fort.

Old machine, so I have to optimise whatever it is I am targeting.

6x6, because it's default.  Though, I've grown used to it, so larger maps seem barren, and smaller maps feel restrictive.

I must have running water and a magma pipe.  Running water for power and magma because DF without magma is ... not.  I like making glass for projects, but if a map doesn't have sand, I Tweak it in in a reasonable way, so it's only a loose requirement.  I'm really starting to like my flat map for Swordbaldness, but I still enjoy height variations for the character.  Anything else is just icing.
