Projectile Speed and Accuracy
« on: December 16, 2009, 03:31:00 pm »

I did a couple good searches for this, but got nothing useful, so I'm going to go ahead and post this. if it's in the devnotes or I missed a suggestion then go ahead and shoot me down.

It would be nice to have moddable projectile speed. I would personally like to slow down crossbow and bow bolts, but increase the rates of a few modded in weapons, even going so far as to have laser pistols that could fire ammo near-instantaneously.

While we're on the subject of projectile modification, would it be unreasonable to also include accuracy modification for your projectiles? I know vanilla is supposed to be firmly in the pre-renaissance, but modified versions are going to need alterable raws for their long ranged weapons.

Yay or nay?

umm.. that's why it's in suggestions. As in "a place for suggesting things you would like to see in game". I know it's hardcoded, or I would've changed it by now.

This has been suggested before, yes.

Where?
Many threads suggest the ability or the desire to modify crossbows.

Here are a few.....

Some of them discuss many suggestions throughout their thread...

But your thread is just as valid...  Just you may wish to read them to further refine your idea. some are very detailed.

I believe the one at http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=23789.0 most relates to your idea.

By speed, do you mean rate of fire, or the rate of movement of the projectile?

At first, it seems to mean the speed the projectile moves, then it references firing continuously, which suggests rate of fire. Nothing clear about it.

Well, I see how the second sentence of what I quoted my introduce some vagueness, but I thought the words "projectile speed" in the first sentence were pretty clear.

Both should be moddable. I like it though. DF's engine fits well with everything from stone age survival to swords and sorcery to steampunk and even into modern/sci-fi. The ability to control both the base rate of fire (and possibly the rate of fire gained from skill) and the projectiles speed would be awesome.

Also, controlling the base accuracy would be nice too, for things like sniping weapons vs raking weapons.

I like both, but I was asking because projectile speed is no as commonly addressed.

Yeah, I meant projectile speed. I said near-instantaneously rather than near-continuously in an attempt to clarify, but it seems I was not quite clear enough. I know projectile fire rates have been covered, but projectile speed rates haven't.

The reason I suggest this is because I would really like to equip my dwarves with slow firing weapons based on sniper rifles, with projectiles able to cross the distance as quickly as possible so that enemies don't get a chance to run off. Also because it would look way cool :D
