[40d]Caravan Wagons moving slower and slower each year.
« on: December 14, 2009, 02:52:34 pm »

For the past four IG years both the human and dwarf caravans are plagued by one wagon which moves about 10% normal speed.  It doesn't seem to be consistent which wagon this will be, but it feels like a pathfinding issue:

FPS on map prior to arrival of ultra-slow wagon: 100ish.
FPS when ultra-slow wagon is only merchant unit not in depot and all bring-to-depot jobs are complete: 20-30, dipping to 5 and suffering from short-term lockups very frequently.  (Estimation of wagon speed is based on movement of worker dwarfs moving nearby.)
This wagon causes some other wagons to also be slow when they all spawn on top of it.  Eventually they will pathfind around it.

I saw this bug noted for 40c and 38-something, but not my version so I'm making a 40d thread for it.

EDIT: The FPS butchery didn't stop when the slow wagon left the map (though it improved the FPS from 8-30 to 30-75, the lockups still happen).

This has already been posted here, and it's the exact same bug as in previous versions. In addition to getting slow wagons, you may also get fast wagons which can traverse the entire map in a matter of seconds.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I checked the inventory of the slow wagon.  It was NOT the wagon with all the heavy items.  It had a whole slew of finished goods bins, but the wagons with all the anvils (over a dozen) moved at normal speed.

(Also that bug didn't appear in my search, or I would've posted to that thread.)

Also, the thread you linked didn't mention the FPS slaughtering or lock-ups.  The wagon is being slow on the way out, I'll watch it to confirm that FPS improves when it leaves (rather than its friends).

I've never seen a drop in FPS reported by the wagon glitch... unless it was mentioned on a much older thread, that one's new to me.

Just curious, how did you check the inventory of the slow wagon?

I've never tried it and there's a good chance it could make them freak out.
Do it.

The same way you check the inventory of any other unit - just place the cursor over the center tile of the wagon, right behind the driver.

Out of curiosity... is it possible the slow wagon was overloaded on the way in, and that it doesn't check for wagon overload on the way out? (I.e. fixing the speed on generation, rather than dynamically?)

My last two merchants had a slow wagon. both times it was the third wagon in line going to the depot and leaving from it. version: 0.28.181.40d16

Maybe all the bloods, ichors and vomits on all the items is dragging down the wagon when they need to be tracked? If so, sounds to me like very bad design.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.
