One of my rangers just shot a dragon to death.
« on: December 13, 2009, 10:35:35 pm »

With only two hoary marmots to his name, and most of a sheaf of steel bolts.

Problem is, my dorfs aren't touching it-even marked as Dump, deforbidden, and everything. And yes, I do have a dump area.

With an air of disappointment, I gave him the title of Dragon Slayer-for I had hoped to capture the dragon for my own use.

So! Why won't my dorfs touch the dragon corpse with its hideously valuable hide, bones, meat, and such?

Is it too far away? Because I drafted a Peasant to make sure he'd get close enough and made a dump five spaces from him, and he didn't do anything.

Halp!

Make sure dwarves are set to haul outdoor refuse, o -> r -> o. That's the usual culprit.

The wiki is notoriously inaccurate on subjects at the cutting edge, frequently reflecting passing memes, folklore, or the word on the street instead of true dwarven science.

They are. They've been hauling off Goblin corpses well enough.

You've got a refuse pile that accepts dragons?

I'm really hoping mega beasts will be formidable foes next release.

One of my forts was invaded by a dragon, who then promptly passed out from pain.

An immigrant fisherdwarf who just arrived on the map slowly strangled the dragon to death over the course of two seasons.

Did you check the dragon's injuries at the time? It probably had one of its legs cut off during worldgen, which doesn't seem to bother them until they actually enter the map. Hell, in the current SA LetsPlay "Syrupleaf", the fort got attacked by a Hydra who had one of its necks torn out during worldgen (and seemingly survived), causing it to bleed to death shortly after arriving at the map edge.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

In my first fortress I had a dragon show up and... just sort of loiter around the edge of the map. Once I sent my soldiers after him, one of my swordsdwarfs lopped his leg off with such force that it ended up in a tree twenty tiles away, then proceeded to murder it outright. Without a single scratch. True, he was ultra-mighty, superdwarvenly tough, and encased in steel, but damn, I was impressed with the fact that he singlehandedly and savagely massacred a dragon with no injuries.

I've killed dragons in adventure mode with an accomplished axe user, with no other skills leveled. I think dragons are overrated, in the current version.

Stupid how you can gouge things eyes out ( i do that to EVERY SINGLE ENEMY I MEET) and they collapse from pain, even after like years...

Mine had grey wounds to one claw and its foreleg.

Wimpy dragon, unless I misremember what gray is (I think it's a bruise.)

Grey wounds are missing body parts, particularly if the body parts are all connected to each other.
