Ups:
Agile
Very Tough

Expert Miner
Competent Swimmer
Novice Judge of Intent
Novice Appraiser
Dabbling blah blah blah social skills.

Journal of Enyo, 4th Month Day 7.
It's time to honor promises made to those who risked their lives to come here, so we've finally dug out the spacious bedrooms requested of Xanthius and begun constructing the glass production workshops needed to get the soap industry underway.  Despite my misgivings that such an industry will never be practical, Ups and Dermonster have forged ahead with the "Tell Rellik to start making a soap industry" plan.

Journal of Enyo, 4th Month Day 10.
Enemy of the Dwarf people: Nomenshal the Skeletal Mammoth.

No amount of training could prepare me for the fear that charged into my life, it was another training day and I felt confident with my wrestling abilities.  But still without weapon, I felt naked against the onslaught of the beast that came in unnoticed.

Juarous and Ups were the first to see the Skeletal Mammoth as it silently roared, it's bones clanking together as it rushed past them both.  Juarous ran for the gate and Ups ran back into the rear where Xanthius and I were training.  The mammoth ignored Juarous, choosing to impale Ups chest with its tusk.  He was dead within an instant.

Monstrous and devoid of empathy or instinct.  It's only purpose remaining in this glacial hell is to kill, a piggy squeal was cut short by a log sized bone foot as it turned it's eyes upon us as we trained.  The bone armor that Dermonster strapped to my hands and legs and the heater shields carved from whole logs by Rellik easily saved my partners life.  It charged fast and low at Xanthious who turned a tusk aside with his shield as we ran for it.

Turning back, I saw that the thing from hell was faster and closing in.  Waving my arms I distracted it from Xanthious, [I was very enraged in game that my character wasn't running.]  My breath came ragged through my beard and my legs ran after Xanthius.  Desperate to catch up I saw we we're running outside the fortress to where Juarous was.  Juarous yelled at the top of his lungs "Raise the drawbridge!"  and Dermonster did just that as well as seal the inner wooden doors - leaving me trapped inside with the Mammoth.  My only companion being the lonely musk ox.

This is the last thing I ever saw alive.

As my death screams filled the air, there was a sense of tension in the air.  Hexed, sensing the urgency of leaving companions outside to possible other mammoths, dug a stairway outside the walls to let in Xanthius and Juarous.  But from the door that Dermonster and Rellik were keeping shut. . .

Dermonster was stunned by the sudden towercap shrapnel that assaulted him.  He stumbled forward towards the door; blindly he reached out trying to see, and bumping into the now bloodied beast.  He turned and ran.  It was immediately decided in this time of battle that Xanthius was to be the new Expedition Leader and should take charge.  But no orders could be given.  Dermonster ran down the hall to the East, straight towards the Ice bridge where there is no escape with Relliks pet Bull right in front.  Half way down Hexed started trying to dig a channel to prevent himself from being killed and at the end on the Ice bridge Juarous ran into a room and began to throw ice at the narrow entry point.

Hexed Immediately saw the futility of his plan and started running,  Hexed and Dermonster silently decided to try to make it into  Juarous' room before he closed it shut.

But for all 3 it was too late, not a single scratch was put on the mammoth.

Last was Goden the Bull who shivered alone and afraid at the end of an icy bridge.  With a raging Mammoth charge to end him.

As the mammoth wandered back to the West down the hall, Rellik and Xanthius were building a wall of their own.  With only a single gap the mammoth charged through it.  Xanthius dove into a pit and hid.  While Rellik managed to outrun the beast and now waits in a corner for it to pass on.  Or else Xanthius will never be able to climb out from where he dove to.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 4th Month Day 21.
The mammoths bones clanked along the icy walls for 3 days,  Rellik and Xanthus were seperated and in hiding.  Waiting for the beast to pass on, they grew hungry and thirsty, but dare not leave their spot.  They winced as a deep silent bellow reverberated like a shockwave underground, cracking ice and bringing one to his knees.  A squeal was heard and the other pig they brought was murdered.

The muskox hooves were heard overhead followed by a deep pounding of the ceiling above.  This meant only one thing to Rellik: The beast has taken to the surface world to hunt!  Racing from her place of hiding he went to seal the small stairway the late Hexen had made.  And secure themselves from further slaughter.

But first she had to go upstairs and have a little Tantrum.

She ran inside and out as if begging the mammoth to come back.  Screaming at the top of her lungs for the crimes the creature had commited against her kind.  Finally Rellik calmed down enough to go back inside and barricade the breach.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 5th Month Day 4.
Only one tame animal remains, huddled against the frigid waves: The lonely Muskox

Inside the fortress Rellik continues to get consoled by Xanthius.  Being hardly up to the task, the conversation degenerates down to Rellik screaming "Everyones dead!" and Xanthus saying "Yeah, so?"

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 5th Month Day 13.

5 casualties were mourned over by Rellik, hopefully preventing her suicide.  Xanthius called a meeting in which he explained how they could both benefit by selling all the deads property in exchange for needed lumber and food stocks.  Rellik threw a tantrum when she heard of this,  toppling the crafts shop.

Out on the Ice the lonely Muskox is slowly stalked by Zombie Mammoths, a Muskox overheats from it's shaggy fur if it runs for too long.  It must pace itself it it wants to live.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 5th Month Day 19.
Xanthius moved his bed to the spacious living space he demanded before he had even arrived.  But there is still lots of work to be done.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 5th Month Day 27.
The grief consoling continues, due to Relliks inability to move on, Xanthius has decided it'd be safer to give these sessions while he wears his armor.

The Oxens hoofs were not meant to tread over Ice for long periods of time.  Preferring the softer feel of the tundra, the ice cuts into the lonely Muskox as he continues his slow retreat from the mammoth.

Journal of Xanthius, 28th of Malachite

There is, even in the supposedly infinite darkness of tragedy, always a candle of hope.

That candle is Rellik and I.

Together, we endured, narrowly avoiding the fates that befell our fellow dwarves.

We shall survive. We shall endure. We shall prosper. We stared Death itself in the face, and survived. What can stop us now?

My father always told me: No enemy, not even Time itself, is invulnerable. Living things can be slain. Inanimate objects can be destroyed. Some have conquered Time itself, and are immortal. But, in the end, how can you defeat Death?

Simple. Once you conquer all your foes, what can Death do to you? Nothing, that's what. We shall survive. We shall prosper.

My presence makes Death itself feel intimidated, and rightfully so. It knows I do not fear It. And neither should we.

Fear is what breaks us apart, shatters our soul, and ultimately destroys us in the end.

But Fear is an enemy, and enemies can be slain.

I am Xanthius Saziram, "Bridgedyawns", and I make this oath on this 28th of Malachite. We shall survive. We shall endure. We shall prosper.

-------

Wow, just say that whole thing with this playing. It is epic.

Ghost of Dermonster:

It is always sad to see someone die before your eyes.

This time was different, as I was the one who died in front of me.

They say your life flashes before your eyes before you die, giving you one last surge of strength, that you may be remembered as one who did NOT go gently into that good night.

I remember my father. My mother. My little brother. My aunts and Uncles, My grandparents and my nephews. I remember when we would fish at Lake Sorrowgear, laughing when Connor freaked out at the sight of a lungfish. I remember Dwarfmas, and all the cheer it would bring, hugs from relatives, gifts from friends and family.

I remember when I first learned of soap. I remember how nice it smelled. I also remember the ridicule, and the burning hatred of the substance. I remember how I vowed to prove them wrong, that I would make a tower, no, a Giant Monument to pierce the heavens in soapy glory, in a glacier no less.

The good times, the bad times. It always seems like its over in an instant.

I watched over Rellik and Xanthius. Rellik was tearing himself apart and Xanthius is still trying his best to make it through alive. I shall watch over them for now. Maybe after all is said and done, and I pass to the great Cask in the sky, I shall make a dungeon of soap in a desert. To pierce the earth and one again see my family.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 6th Month Day 10.
It's been nearly a month and a half and the grief consoling continues.  Despite being Xanthius' only friend he begins to quickly lose patience with the hand holding.  Neither Rellik's mood nor Xanthius' skill at grief consoling has improved within this same time frame.  In fact, his attempts may have been so bad that. . .

'Rellik' Ensurvad, Mason is stricken by Melancholy.
How cruelly the candle is snuffed out.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 6th Month Day 16.
Xanthius has built a 6th coffin and has neatly returned his mittens to his room.  His cheer has not receded in the slightest.  He even designated a bedroom for Rellik who stares distantly at her Ice walls.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 6th Month Day 23.
Now free of consoling, Xanthius takes the time to make himself some furniture for his room!  Like a cabinet, a chest and oo lets not forget the statues!

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 6th Month Day 26.
Stoic Xanthius is not immune to his own emotions it seems.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 7th Month Day 4.
Autumn.
To keep his hands occupied, Xanthius organizes everything just so.  Despite the last horrific tragedy he reluctantly lowers the drawbridge in preparation of the Dwarven traders.  For if this trade does not take place, he will surely starve the following year.

As he wanders to bed to sleep after a long period of work he passes by Rellik leaving his room.  Concerned, he greets her, but she doesn't respond and wanders the frigid halls.  The fortress felt cold that night.

P.S. The Lonely Muskox is currently doing fine to the north.

Journal of the ghost of Enyo, 7th Month Day 13.
The front door is open and welcoming to the Ice Blue Tongsdale.  A collection of things for sale are already prepared upstairs next to the depo, so Xanthius keeps busy by smoothing the Ice in his room.  Trying his hand at the late Ups' job, he even updates the books, recording the stocks of the fortress.

However, just as he starts, the caravan arrives.  The last mile is always the hardest.

Journal of Xanthius, 13th of Limestone

Well...I'll admit it. I'm in some serious trouble right now.

I'll put it as simply and quickly as I can.

Rellik's stricken by Melancholy. The candle...has been snuffed out.

Am I really that bad at this?

Can I really run a fortress on my own?

The caravan is here. Everything is already ready for trading.

I'm not a trader. But I must learn quickly, it seems.

With everyone dead (or good as dead, in Rellik's case), I'm going to have to take over.

I shall survive. I shall endure. I shall prosper.

-------

Well, now what? What are my stats?
