Hmmm... I've got a pretty good update coming...
I made an interesting choice, one some may not agree with...
and I have another big choice to make... one that I consider worthy of waiting until I get the update done to get some input from you all.
But, sadly I won't have the update posted until some time tomorrow...
It won't be a long one, but I think it should be worth the wait and the decision at the end should be worth my not continuing playing until I get input. Hopefully.

1144 con't

The rebels in Karvuna continue to hang
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Sometimes I am truly amazed by the common folk... I suppose I am doing the world a favor by removing such obviously suicidal rabble from the realm. These fools cannot seriously believe I, a Prince by right, would begin negotiating with them after swearing not to? They are too stupid to understand they are better off with me and my protection than without. Perhaps I should invite some Muslim barbarians to raid the countryside, then these insolent peasants may finally begin to recognize the service I do them.

Unbelievable!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kilic has done it! After all I did for him... I took him in to my court when he was exiled- I honored his claim on Vladimir, I guided him to the true faith- and now he turns on me so. Once a heathen always a heathen, it seems.
My personal demesne no longer extends to the region so I will need to deal with my vassal's forces to handle this problem.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Elias, Count of Smolensk and Muskva, is devotedly loyal to me.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kallinikos, the young Bishop of Uglich and Pereyaslav Zalessky, is also devotedly loyal.
I can rely on both of them to provide their troops to me with little adverse affect.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nikolaos, my young step son and Count of Rostov, is loyal, but not to the extent as Elias and Kallinikos. I will leave his troops be and only consider using them should things go very wrong.
Kilic's army is just over 1600 strong
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
with the forces at my disposal in the area I should be able to put down his little rebellion easily enough.
...
Alternatively I could consider Rad's diplomatic approach to this situation...
While I must admit the man has been wrong before (about this situation in the first place...) and has even openly challenged my reputation, I must also concede that he is one of the best diplomats in the world. Rad is an excellent chancellor, to say the least... He has proposed a different solution to this problem- one that does not involve bloodshed. Rad is all too aware of my slightly tarnished reputation- he needs to deal with other dignitaries' opinions of me during all of his diplomatic dealings- and has a solution that can fix that problem, among others.
Vladimir is a wealthy province, I believe Kilic brings in around 7 gold monthly. That is about a third of my demesne income, or ~1/5 of my income with the current scutage. But, as Rad points out my throne does not get all 7 of that gold... we only take in a fraction of it, depending on scutage, which with the current feudal contract is limited to less than half. So under the assumption that I would hand the province back to a vassal after defeating Kilic, I would only be gaining no more than ~3gold a month.
Rad has suggested I 'sell' Vladimir to Kilic. I could recognize Kilic as the rightful Count of Vladimir (which, behind closed doors I will admit that he is) while demanding Kilic's entire treasury, currently around 370 gold. Doing so would net me ~120 months of the income I'd normally get from Vladimir in one lump sum as well as help improve my reputation by giving up my claim on the province.
Rad's solution is effectively a trade: I get an improved reputation, 370 gold and I save the cost of a war now in exchange for my giving up ~1600 potential soldiers and ~3 gold potential income a month...
Rad is also quick to point out that Vladimir is of a different cultural region than my other holdings, making my claim on a Prince title tied to the region far fetched...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will put my faith in Rad's judgement... I send the peace offer; recognizing Kilic as the rightful Count of Vladimir in exchange for 370 gold...

Radoslav Vojislavljevic has insulted me in a tourney!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He had the nerve to claim I was 'cowering to Muslim extortion in the east'. That... that... that swine! I demand immediate compensation!
But nothing comes of it.

A new Pope
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I thought the messenger was bringing news of Kilic's response to my peace offer. When I realized it was pointless news of a phony icon, I was very disappointed- I let it out on the messenger...

A response!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kilic has accepted my offer. I've lost Vladimir but gained wealth.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is still at war with my ally, the Duchy of Moravia, though... Maybe they will destroy him  ::)

It seems my choice may have paid off:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
my reputation is respectable. It appears my method of handling the situation was appreciated as an act of good character. Rad's diplomatic spin on the news probably helped as well.

Zoe, my daughter, is five
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She will study at the monastery- the only place that can help keep her womanly evil from manifesting.

I have cut the realm's scutage to zero
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Revenues are down to under 25 monthly, but now my vassals will be able to field larger armies. With a newly respectable reputation, positive wealth, and an absence of instability in the realm I may consider expansion once again. My claim on Karnten has been burning away at the back of my mind all these years and I am finally able to prepare to act on it... Revenge will be swift and brutal.

Zenophon, my son, is showing promise of becoming a great stateman
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I vow to pass a strong realm on to him...

My wife seems to appreciate my newfound love for her
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
she is devotedly loyal to me. Maybe thats why she inflicted an 800 gold debt on me before, she did not appreciate being in a marriage without love...?

The mine is completed in Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But while waiting for my vassals' garrisons to grow and my treasury to further fill, I will not build new provincial improvements.

I have made plans for war. But once again Rad has made alternative suggestions...
I want to punish Nikolaz in Karnten. But Rad has presented some... disturbing reports to me
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kuman, the Count of Padua and Verona, while devotedly loyal is also displaying signs of rebelliousness.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hartmann, the Count of Krain, is also displaying signs of rebelliousness. He is even somewhat disloyal, but Rad assures me it is a result of his new placement as Count and should improve. While his reasoning sounds fair I must remember what happened with Kilic... his loyalty faltered due to an event (my public reprimanding of his desire for elective law) and while it looked like it would return to normal, he took negative action quickly, before I had a chance to improve our relations.
I would need to rely on Hartmann and Kuman to wage my war against Nikolaz for me- but with their signs of rebelliousness that puts a dangerous spin on things. Despite their current loyalty, using their troops could change their disposition to me. I'd be in no place to further put them in their place should they choose to act out. The costs of waging war with Belgrade and nearby troops would be very high, something I'd like to avoid. And even then, should I gain Karnten back, the area would still be at risk of rebellion due to Kuman's and Hartmann's rebellious attitudes. It seems their distance from the rest of the realm has given them a flair of extreme and independent thought.
Rad suggests I let my grudge against Nikolaz go. He suggests I leave Kuman and Hartmann be, collect taxes from them but do nothing to push them into a corner, for they may lash out.
Rad essentially suggests I forget about the west and put my focus into domestic issues- or if I must have war that I focus on nearer enemies. He rightfully points out that I have no personal connection, interest or desire in west/mainland Europe... I am Greek, after all.
I must ponder his ideas...

Rad is wise, but you must also consider what benefits conquering them would bring ye, do remember you have made a vow to pass a strong realm to your son... Though a larger realm is not necessarily a stronger one. Also, two of your subjects are showing signs of rebellion aswell, mayhap it would be too dangerous to leave a potential enemy alone with two rebellious friends, aye?

Rad has proved his words are worth of attention though, mayhap it would be wise to listen to him again, and just choose to deal with the foreign matters later.

I'd say ignore northern Italy/southern Germany for now. our focus should really be on getting a king title and stopping the revolts, especially now we have a stable realm. Maybe head hunt a bit and see if any nearby king titles are up for grabs, otherwise see if we can war with Croatia to gain enough of Serbia to create that one.

Also, you didn't give much infos about what's going in the east. How's the Byzantium empire doing lately? It would be about time to start the rebuilding of the byzantium empire... or restart its destruction if it's doing fine now  :P

Serbia King title is 'easiest' target but also very hard to get. Rashka is actually really strong. They can field many thousand soldiers, pretty much requiring me to bring in troops from my Rus area vassals, which will be very very expensive.

Byzantium... I need to take a close look, I haven't checked that area the last several years.
I will try to remember to get screenies or at least info on all relevant areas.

Expensive for your Russian vassals though? I thought you don't pay for vassal raised troops. Also when I said head hunt I was proposing scanning around for any you could inherit. You're probably one of the "strongest" dukes in the game right now so if you swear fealty to an old man using elective law...

Well, I will need to have my own troops raised anyways (to avoid loyalty issues)

Slim pickin's. Byzantium is one of the only elective states in the world at the moment... I could try and work my way in there, I suppose... then change the inheritance law and deal with the aftermath, or just make sure my son is strongest...

(1144 con't)

The crazy Tornik Gavras, a schizophrenic bastard with no duties in my court is requesting permission to retire
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I gladly grant the request. Men like him can be dangerous to have around.

After seeking advice from my court on how to act int he west I've decided to hold off on any plans of war for the time being. I am not completely giving up on taking Kartnen back and punishing Nikolaz, I'm just putting the plan on hold...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
which opens my wallet to provincial improvements once again. I order the construction of a civilian harbor in Constantia.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and a glass-works in Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and a Templar House in Belgrade.

1145
The Principality of Samos remains strong
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Even though, I must admit looking at the map is truly awkward for several reasons: Firstly, I don't own the province of Samos... and, Secondly, the realm is split into three main geographical areas, each with their own cultures and customs... Oh well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I, at least, am well. Ever since I have spun off some vassals my life has gotten easier. Running a 6 province demesne is much less stressful than a 9+ demesne.

A civilian harbor is completed in Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
following a maritime theme, I will build a fishing wharf next.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Why I even bother helping the rebellious population, I don't know... I suppose I am growing soft with age.

The Galaz glass-works in completed
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Galaz-glass... catchy name.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A library will be of use in the province, next. Educated nobles are wise nobles. Wise nobles know not to press their power...

By golly- I am speechless
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems Kyranna really just wanted to be loved.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am starting to wish she would produce me another child...

The Count of Veglia has proposed his marshal, Mihail, marry Ladika of my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ladika is my neice
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I agree to the terms and send her off to her new husband.

The Turnu glass-works is completed
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I continue my education initiative with the construction of another library
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'll also have a talk with my marshal to see if he can set some guards around these libraries. I've been hearing rumors that peasants are trying to access them... Silly peasants do not understand that only nobles have the capacity to make use of texts.

Macbeatha requires a formal education
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will send him to train in the army. Lucky for him he will still see land as a second son, but court skills will be less important for him, since his older brother will be Prince after me.

Interesting...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Michael, my wife's crazed son has inherited a fortune and a claim
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Both of Michael's brothers hold land within my realm, Markianos is the second eldest, and Michael's current successor
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Perhaps Michael will do something stupid and get himself killed- allowing Markianos to take the claim and money... hopefully Michael doesn't waste it all first, though.

It is time for action. My realm is strong and prosperous. Karvuna is the only province in my demesne still in revolt, something I can work around, and the realm's stability is decent. I have vast wealth, thank you wife, and great prestige. The Duke of Rashka has been a thorn in my side since birth. His people constantly cross our borders to hunt and trade in my realm. My vassal, the Count of Naissus, is surely suffering from the transgresses by Rashka, too. it is my duty to protect my vassal and the innocent people of Rashka. If life is so horrible in Hum and Rashka that they feel the need to cross into my borders, I will help them. I mean, they are pretty much my people as is... now I just need to make it formal:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I grab the title Prince of Rashka...

Hangman, hang me some traitors!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Karvuna is the last province to still openly rebel against me. I will string them up until they learn the error of their ways.

A fishing wharf is done in Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I should just tear it down to deprive the ungrateful swine of the province of its benefits...
But I have more important issues to deal with in Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am initiating the construction of a road network. This is purely for military reasons. Right now Karvuna is a bottleneck location for marching troops. I need to improve road conditions to permit faster travel through the province.
Karvuna will be a slowdown only one last time: now
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I order the mobilization of my troops.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Just under 23,000 men are reported to be at my disposal.
I order them to Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Next year will be ... exciting.

1146
Most of my time is occupied working out the logistics of moving my regiments. The Galaz, Constantia, and Karvuna regiments are all still held up crossing the Danube. My Turnu and Severin regiments have made it to Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The completion of a glass-works in Severin snapped me out of my military commander hat and reminded me to look after the realm, as well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Things are well. The treasury is down over 300 gold since raising my regiments one month ago. Let us hope the eastern regiments arrive in Belgrade soon.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I personally am well. Honestly, 31 years of age feels no different than 30. But I can be sure it feels different than when I was 20. My right knee aches every now and then and my eyes are not as good... but overall I am well.

With my age I have considered various options to better myself in the eyes of God
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
but there are steps I will not take... I love my wife and am hoping that the improbable chance of having a child with her still may strike.

My eastern regiments are marching through Severin. Another month of losing more than 300 gold worries me, so I will act prematurely without my entire force
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I declare war on Rashka. I am the true Prince of Rashka. The people practically pay me taxes, so often they cross into my lands. Radoslav is a phony leader of the people.... it is time I take what is rightfully mine.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Radoslav has raised sixty-six hundred troops in Hum. My advance army of the combined Belgrade, Severin, and Turnu regiments numbers 15,000 strong.

This war has turned into a personal grudge
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is a war to the death. The phony Prince Radoslav must be deposed.

My advance army has arrived in Hum. We battle
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will be leading my troops personally.

My reinforcements have arrived!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Victory will be ours!

During lulls in battle and minor skirmishes I do not partake in, I still get a chance to rule from abroad. Sadly it seems the current state of war is deteriorating the productive state of the realm
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That is too bad... To try and remedy the situation is too costly- and I am already nearly 400 gold in debt...

Victory
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have sent a stern order through my regiments that looting will not be tolerated. We are here to liberate, not loot. My troops will focus on sieging and maintaining security.

Radoslav the Phony Prince has offered me 257 gold for peace
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
No.

This morning we took Hum
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've taken Radoslav captive. I am demanding he admit I am the rightful Prince of Rashka and that he pay me 229 gold as reparations for making me raise an army to liberate his oppressed peoples
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The man has little choice but to accept
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I agree to leave him with his secondary Prince title and his rule of Hum. I must show lenience to maintain my reputation.

With peace returned to the realm I have traveled to my new vassals to meet them, they all seem very receptive to my rule
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Rad's diplomatic abilities have done wonders to convince even Radoslav's sons that I am the better Prince.

The Constantia civilian harbor is completed
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My debt prevents me from initiating any new construction there...

I received wonderful news from my Galaz administrators
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
they have finally caught up with and disbanded a vicious thieves guild.

In order to help expedite my financial recovery I am going to re-initiate scutage
From none
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
to max permitted by my laws
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
the scutage will generate an additional 20 gold monthly, bringing my monthly income to 55.

Rad can never be truly happy, can he?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is currently a victim of his own skill. I need him too much as chancellor to put him in any other position... this also keeps him from being rewarded with land for his service... too bad...

Debt collectors have claimed my Severin glassworks
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'll just have to rebuild it in a couple of months...

My daughter Eudoxia will be educated at the monastery
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The nuns should keep her from causing too much trouble.

A band of highway robbers was caught in Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was tempted to let them free again to freely terrorize rebellious population... but it was too risky that they'd spread to other parts of my realm.

The Galaz library is completed
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Still in debt, I cannot initiate a new construction.

Kuman, the Count of Padua is happy with my wise and fair rule

1147
The new year signals a return to a positive treasury balance and the completion of the library in Turnu
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is nice to see my realm stretching from the Black Sea to the Adriatic Sea on the map...
I am still young-ish, and have plenty of time to continue my realm's expansion
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A rather sad fact: I have only one sibling left alive:-/

The road network in Karvuna is finished
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
hopefully it will speed travel through the province.

The Templar House in Belgrade is completed
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I welcome the knights in my land.

The local barons could help to improve the miserable state of stability in the realm, but it will mean a loss of face for me
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The realm's stability is paramount! As the realm grows I cannot afford to have instability plaguing me. I do not want to see a resurgence of peasant revolts, again...

For some months now Rad has been instituting a plan to elevate my position in the world. I control a vast stretch of land relating to a single greater ethnic identity. Rad thinks that with proper funding, he could establish the notion of my realm being an independent Kingdom... with me as King of Serbia
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I grant him 250 gold to make it happen.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My people accept me as King. The world accepts me as a King. Glorious Day, Glorious Day.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At age 32 I, Lazaros Synadenos, have been crowned King of Serbia.

My son Dauid has excelled in the 'art' of decadence
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Oh dear...
Well, at least I can distract myself by signing an order to hang more Karvuna rebels
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Will they ever learn?

As King I am elevated to a position above regular Princes and Dukes. I also have the ability to grant greater charges to my Bishops
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I grant the title Archbishop of Rostov to Kallinikos, Bishop of Uglich
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully this will decrease the micromanagement of vassals in the area... Now I need only to deal with one man instead of two.

I am initiating construction of a school in Belgrade
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
now noble children will have better avenues to success in their local education

With the treasury firmly under control I am decreasing the scutage from max
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
to none
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My monthly revenue has dropped to 34, but my vassals will be happier and are able to field more troops.

I order the re-construction of a glassworks in Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully I will not lose this one to debt collectors again.

Karvuna just doesn't get it
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My marshal will handle them easy enough

Har! My son, Xenophon is 16. he is also infatuated with a girl in my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He can feel the love overtake him! The interesting part is that the girl, Joscella, is actually his cousin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is my sister's daughter
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The boy is turning into a man now, and Joscella is not fit to be my son's public lover...
This woman, on the other hand, is:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ada Loairn is the 18 year old daughter of the King of Scotland. Her skills are not amazing, but she is versatile and of royal blood. I send an offer of marriage to the King of Scotland
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Surely the King has heard of the mighty Kingdom of Serbia and would be delighted to have his daughter marry into my family...

My Diocese Bishop has died of age
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He was 57. I have no one to replace him
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Oh well.

Excellent!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The King of Scotland has agreed to have his daughter marry my son!
As a wedding gift for my boy, I will grant him his first titles
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We start with the Count of Constantia, a common starting title for the sons of my family
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Next, I grant him the title Prince of Karvuna, and follow with the titles of Galaz and Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My first son deserves nothing less than the entire Principality of Karvuna.

Times are good for my people
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
good enough for them to pay a little extra in taxes.

My daughter Vezhav has become a heathen bashing fanatic
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Good for her!
