@Goron: I believe that when talking about vassalizing states, andrea meant the peace-offer type of vassalization, not the annexation-and-title-granting type. I'm not 100% sure, but I've got a feeling that the second one gives a net negative effect on your reputation.

@chaoticag: it grows back over time, rather slowly. When you've got some claims, the "abandon claim for reputation gain" event can fire. Creating vassals also seems to grant some minor reputation boost.
Low reputation is a major factor in reducing your vassal's loyalty. I think other countries are more prone to attack you as well.

The start of my first calendar year as ruler
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is hard to believe that just one year ago I was studying in Belgrade about soldiering... I never expected to be Prince.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I moved to Vladimir. That way I could more closely govern my new lands as well as show myself as liege to my new vassals.
But shortly after arriving in Vladimir I discovered the area the be quite unfriendly to my presence... the lands are not like back home- there are pagans everywhere... It was then that I was reminded that Kilic al-Ibrahim came to my court with a claim on Vladimir
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While he never served in the war, he expressed desire and eagerness to. As such I decided to grant him the title of Vladimir
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and I moved back to Belgrade not even a day after arriving
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Home sweet home.

Provincial unrest is common after wars, my court says, so I should not be surprised by Constantia's revolt... but Severin has crossed the line and actually raised a band of soldiers against me
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've tapped Marshal Nikolaz to raise a regiment out of Turnu and destroy the rebels

It seems that the rebels in Severin have caught wind that Nikolaz is marching  towards them with over 650 men
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They are willing to negotiate demands... I've instructed Nikolaz to hang the traitors when he arrives. I will not tolerate rebels.

Disease threatens Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
If I had it my way, I'd let the fools fend for themselves- but my court has insisted I encourage the clergy to care for the sick. We do not want malaria spreading...

Nikolaz informs me the rebels have been destroyed
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Excellent.

Those ungrateful fiends are back at it!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I do not know why I listened to the court and showed them mercy when malaria threatened!

While my marshal puts down rebels in Severin, Turnu offers terms
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Never. I hang the traitors! If they want me to help them, they need to stop working against me!

Nikolaz took a hefty blow to the head
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Besides some dizziness he seems otherwise fine.

This man needs a helmet!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is weaker, but otherwise fine...

Despite two hits to the head Nikolaz successfully shut down the Severin rebels
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Perhaps next time they will think before acting out against their lord.

Ryazan's executioners have job security too
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
until I get out of debt there is little I can do to influence loyalty and/or religion in my provinces. And the more these fools rebel, the longer it will be before I can get out of debt. Do they not realize they are only hurting themselves?!?!

Elias sent me a kind message
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
it seems I made the right choice, changing to Feudal Contract.

The revolt spreads like wildfire
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have ordered the hiring of an additional shift of hangmen in Galaz

I have been blessed with a son
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He will be named Xenophon.

A messenger came with news about Karnten today,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was relieved to hear he was not bringing news of a new revolt...

We have hardly the time to discuss any issues in court other than who to hang and when
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've ordered the most recent rebels rounded up in Severin to be executed.

Horrible news from Rostov
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
These idiots are destroying their own lands!

I've authorized the sale of the Karnten tile-factory to settle some debts
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We are still financially crippled, but only for a few more months... then everything will be fine again.

The rabble are foolish enough to try again
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What do these fools think they are achieving? I am a Prince, I do not fear them! Nikolaz will dispatch them soon enough...

Ahah! It seems the fools are getting it
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
while their less intelligent neighbors are getting killed by Nikolaz, the remaining population of Severin have decided to smarten up. That's good news!

My brother Kaloyan is 16
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is still training under Nikolaz, and I must admit he has proven to be a better martial warrior than I so far...

yes, I meant the peace treaty kind. and yes, annexation-and-title-granting gives a net loss of reputation.
take your time to get a stable realm then slowly force pagan counties to become vassals. Without taking their land, of course.  You just capture it and then force them to  become your vassals. No loss of reputation, some more soldiers and maybe half a coin in scoutage.

edit: and you may not care about strength of vassals now, but when you will have 70 vassals like me you will be happy that none of them can even remotely match your strength. Realm duress and civil war are waiting for you at each death of a ruler, or even before, doesn't matter if you have full coffers and +3 stability. And then either you are strong enough to force order in your lands again ( or rich enough to bribe them all in happiness) or you get smashes and lose most vassals and many titles.

I do not support Muslims, Pagans, Jews, or any other heathen (*). As such I will not have them rule in my realm, leaving me only with the option to annex them and cleanse their province. And you are correct, you gain more badboy annexing than you lose granting a title.

Quick question: How do I improve my reputation, and what does it affect?
I recently wrote a private message about reputation, but for some reason the forum doesn't save my sent PMs, only received... I'll try and rehash it quickly:
Reputation is one of the most important factors in the game. It is a general representation of your badboy points. If you have played other paradox titles, you will be familiar with badboy (whether you know the specific term or not). Badboy is a behind the scenes value that affects most everything you do or don't do.
Some of the most forward effects you will feel with regards to badboy involve vassal loyalty, courtier events, diplomatic interactions, eagerness for others to assassinate you, and eagerness for others to war you.

Badboy declines slowly over time, but can also go down other ways, such as by granting titles, giving up claims (events), or dying- to name a few.

(*) I am referring TO THE GAME with that statement

(oops, should have added this as modify to my last post)

But I will never have 70 vassals like you. I may have 70 vassals, but not by the same methods. My vassals will like me. Or at least thats the plan. I am not trying to expand in a way that will result in realm duress or rebelliousness. As I mention, it was never my goal to take these northern provinces... I only wanted to capture a few as a method of forcing a peace with the enemy. It was only when they gave no resistance that I decided I'd go on a tangent and conquer lands.
Now I am stuck with unwanted vassals in a split realm. I'm stuck with years of bed events (some that I admittedly propagate myself)...

A loyal vassal today can turn in the most rebellious one later. what matters is not the title itself, but the person and people die and change. be careful.

also, with 70 vassals ( increasing, as soon as I fix some internal problems) soon or later somebody is going to be your rival, which is a problem. then few ther get traits which cause loss of loyalty and so on. it is not hard to keep it stable, but being strong gives safety.

This is true.

also, with 70 vassals ( increasing, as soon as I fix some internal problems) soon or later somebody is going to be your rival, which is a problem. then few ther get traits which cause loss of loyalty and so on. it is not hard to keep it stable, but being strong gives safety.
And again this is true.
I am just trying to mitigate my risks, and for me the number one way of doing that is controlled expansion. I will always try to reset my reputation to positive before I drop it more/again. I will also try to only expand as far as my ability to control allows me. So far I have failed miserably that this. Of course, the fact that I no longer have 6 sons to take titles also affected this but... oh well...
I just wish they had all lived- dynasty vassals are so much more reliable than not.

What are your 'best' titles, btw? You seem to have a very nice empire going for you.

The start of my second full calendar year as ruler
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am only 17 years of age, but a Prince times 4!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Life is good... albeit poor.

A zealous firebrand preaches rebellion in Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The people just recently gave up their revolt, to let this man continue will mean revolt again for sure. I cannot have that. I order him to be strung up!

My brother's wife has joined my brother
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will send notice to her son, my vassal, myself.

More traitors to be hung in Rostov!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A Prince cannot show weakness!

Insurgents have destroyed royal property!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They must think that without the court of justice I cannot punish them! how they are wrong! All we need are lengths of rope or a sharp axe!

The ongoing revolt in Turnu takes people away from their fields and stores, and the economy suffers as a result
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Well maybe if these fools weren't out rebelling they wouldn't have these troubles! I punish the outlaws!

I have assigned Kaloyan as my marshal. I will give Nikolaz a title for his brief service as marshal
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Eventually I may grant Kaloyan a title too, but I fear he may be jealous that the Principality will pass to my son- so for now I'll keep him without much power- at least until I can judge his intent.

Despite my hard work, revolt has once again spread to Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
maybe I need to close the borders to keep the rebellious riffraff in one place...

I am receiving uncertain reports from abroad
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The reports take a while to become clear, but it seems Nikolaz has betrayed me
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
For what reason, I do not know... it seems the messenger with that message screwed up and forgot.
This is how Nikolaz thanks me?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
By stabbing me in the back and going independent? Gar... I just wish I knew the exact reason why...

My court has convinced me to sell another provincial asset to speed up our economic recovery
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They seem convinced that the sooner we have money the sooner the peasants will be happy. I think thats hogwash. The peasants are rebelling because they are ungrateful swine... but... to keep my court from turning against me I agreed to sell a glassworks. But I was sure to sell the one in Galaz so those rebellious pigs will run out of jobs!

Armed resistance in Rostov
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kaloyan will put them down soon enough.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will be sure to rub this in my courts faces- we are not in debt but the rabble still revolt!

Hmm... I will also be sure to hide this report from my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Maybe getting out of debt did help?

It seems my split realm is harder to manage than we all thought
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Thieves, smugglers, and highwaymen have all emerged in Rostov.

The burghers in Karvuna are causing trouble, now
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am starting to wish my dad was around... he would know how to solve these problems...

During my usual walk through the Belgrade countryside I encounter a young shepherdess
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I show her more than just my chivalrous splendor!

Hah! a positive treasury does not end unrest!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...oh... wait, what? The court wants me to spend the treasury on provincial improvements to help make the people happy? ... hrmph..

The chancellor that replaced Dobroslava has in turn passed on
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The next best candidate is poorly skilled when compared to now dead Anastasia and absolutely horrible when compared to my brother's Dobroslava. And to make things even more confusing, the next replacement chancellor is also named Dobroslava
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is old... should she die soon I'll be left with an oaf for a chancellor, probably.

I've wondered for a while now, what effect does stability have? I've only ever noticed it as the little number in the top left, I've never seen it have an obvious in game effect.

it seems things are going fairly well... in 4-5 years you will be fine.

my best titles are king of rus, norway and Mann and the isles. prince of... too many. mine and vassal together, I have around 30 but can't remember them all.
Not many, but I am planning to increase the number soon. while I wait, turkey and egypt may supply my needs of expansion. After what you said about mongols, I won't rest easily until I can raise at least 500000 men. and a lot of meat shields also known as vassals.
then , when stability grows, I'll get title of king of khazaria. I need georgia's vassals for that.
Overall, a nice empire and surprisingly stable. Only problem is the area of mann and the isle, I only have a province there while one of my vassals has 3. so I have to keep him loyal with gold :( I need to war more against scotland, but it is expensive to move my units there.

edit: stability affects stability in your realm. there are ( I suppose) less revolts, events are generally more positive and things like that. I don't really know, but -3 stability makes things messy sometime.

My brother is fully educated
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is a knowledgeable tactician
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and only rather loyal to me...
The realm is expansive but inefficient
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Income is down and my reputation is still tarnished
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But I am still young and healthy...

Rebels at my doorstep!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The revolt has spilled over from Severin. I've ordered more hanging ropes prepared in Belgrade.

I order retribution hangings in Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
thats what they get for spreading rebellion to my home province!

Following my court's advice I am building a church in Rostov
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and Ryazan
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My court says this will be the best way of ending the pagan menace in the area.

It seems my reputation and lack of a properly skilled chancellor have caught up with me
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Duchy of Carinthia has declared war. The duke has a claim on Padua which he is likely trying to fulfill. Don't these fools have historians to remind them what happened when they warred my dad in 1114?
I am deferring command of the war to my brother. He suggests we sit tight, see what forces they bring at us. Given our financial situation I've heard mumbled suggestions of giving Padua up from members of my court... Kaloyan believes he can defeat the enemy on the field, but also warns me that the cost will be great should we send troops in from Belgrade. So for now we will wait and try to recover some tax revenues before raising any regiments.

The Severin clergy request aid in a time of trouble
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
These are the same clergy that failed to convince the Severin people to not rise against me when malaria was threatening the area... I deny the alms.
A noble named Ludwig arrives at my court, he says he holds a claim on a title of my enemy
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I grant him a position in the court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He has a claim on Istria.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is also an excellent soldier...

The enemy arrived in Padua. I authorized Kaloyan to mobilize the garrisoned forces and engage the enemy
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
the result was a very quick battle. It seems the enemy retreated at first sight of my army.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kaloyan will now march on Verona. I also received a report that the title of Istria was granted to a vassal... Clever move- now I cannot force the enemy to recognize Ludwig's claim in peace negotiations.

But to my luck, a new claim holder arrives at my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I accept Burchard in my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He holds a claim on Krain, the Carinthian capital.

After capturing Verona Kaloyan was forced to return to Padua to fend off an enemy seige
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Moments before Kaloyan arrived in Padua, the siege was reinforced. Kaloyan is outnumbered 4491 to 3794... I will resist raising new regiment(s) for now... it would take too long for them to get there to help out in this battle anyways... I could order Kaloyan to retreat, and then maybe reinforcements could get there before he gets engaged again, but I'll likely lose Padua and maybe even Verona, all while suffering attrition and possible combat loses to Kayolan's regiment should he be pursued.
If he loses, I will disband his regiment and save up more money before raising more... maybe even follow my court's advice and give up Padua.

Extra worries I do not need right now
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
while I am glad she is with child, I find the timing to be poor... I've got plenty enough on my plate as is...

By golly, he did it
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
772 men lost and only 609 killed, but victorious. My brother is a knowledgeable tactician indeed...
I've also discovered that my sister Theodote and her husband are in my realm... I guess Dalmatia was not good enough for them (or maybe fell in war)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Rad is a great diplomat. Just what I needed! And while I am reorganizing my court...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I have appointed Ludwig as marshal. Originally I held off because I expected him to be taking the title of Istria as a result of this war- but with that out of the question for the time being, I will utilize his skills as marshal. Sorry brother, I know you won an awesome battle for me and all but thats how it goes...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My skills are back to acceptable! And, with my new chancellor, I will propose peace
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I propose that Burchard, my new court member, be installed as Count of Krain.

On the eve of another victory at my brother's hands
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
the Duke of Carinthia declines my peace...

The current state of war is deteriorating the productive state of my realm
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's too bad. Maybe if my peasants weren't wasting time rebelling but were working instead things would be different.

Oh dear... I just got some bad news
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My brother Kaloyan has been severely wounded in battle.

But even wounded he leads his regiment to victory against a larger force
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will need to repay him for his service somehow.

Constantia's fishery suffered a particularly bad year
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Let them suffer! What did they expect? Me to rescue them at my expense while they are revolting against me? Bah!

My empty coffers are causing severe deterioration in the state of law and order in my realm
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Things are getting bad... very bad... I will try to maintain the current level. Else the realm may completely collapse on me...

My brother has taken Aquileia
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
his small force has single handedly achieved what I expected only possible with an entire army.

I send my sister's kid to the monastery
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I don't have time to be worrying about her.

My own son, on the other hand, is more important to me
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I send him to be raised by a local noble.

Just because I was willing to help maintain the stability of the realm doesn't mean I am willing to compromise with traitors
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I hang more treasonous Rostov peasants

No kidding, waging wars across seas can be very expensive!

^This
my game right now is a perfect example of what you get when you mix negative stability with a bad reputation. Of course, keep in mind my Zero tolerance for rebels keeps the provinces in revolt- should I start giving in to demands revolts would be more come and go and less permanent. If I had +3 stability I'm sure I wouldn't be having nearly as many revolts even with my heavy handed response of hanging them all... But with my current situation I figure I might as well farm prestige from hanging the traitors rather than give in and lose prestige only to have to revolt pop up again after a month.

Also, stability can be very useful when you are in debt... remember when I traded in a stability point for like 600 gold? Yum.

The new year begins with good news from abroad
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Kaloyan captured Carinthia's last directly controlled province, Krain.
Besides a problem with stability, a small debt, and civil unrest, things are well

I am still young and ready to take on the world!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But first it is time to punish Carinthia.
Against the advice of my court, I grab the titles of Verona and Aquileia. This is the second time Carinthia has warred my family- only my crippling them can stop them from doing it again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I offer a peace installing me as Count of Verona, Count of Aquileia, Burchard as Count of Krain, and forcing the recognition of me as rightful Count of Padua.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Excellent. Next I grant the titles of Verona and Padua to my brother Kaloyan. He took a severe wound fighting as my marshal and deserves reward. I also grant Aquileia to Burchard in addition to his ownership of Krain.

I grudgingly give in to the Karvuna rebels' demands.

Ryazan converts to Orthodox
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and the church is not even completed yet! I guess all the missionaries traveling there in anticipation of the church's completion did a great job of converting the masses

Things are looking better in the far north
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
the Rostov thieves guild has disbanded

A zealous firebrand preaches rebellion in Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I just negotiated an end to the rebellion there, and end that embarrassed me as a lord! I will not have zealots enticing the populace to revolt! Bring me the head of the holy man!
Despite my efforts to contain the zealot's message to a coffin, a revolt erupts in Karvuna. I'm furious.

And yet somehow I let me court convince me to give in to the Severin rebels's demands

I do not know why I even bother to do anything for the peasants... Perhaps I should stop protecting them from the Muslims and pagans and enemies of state?
