What a great game of farseeing backstabbery and marriage!

The Dynasty Continues
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My dad is dead. Poisoned, they say.
He was a mighty man...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Not that I'd know... I only met him a couple of times. He sent me off at an early age, before I can remember, to be raised by a Belgrade noble. My mom died when I was three, but that hardly stopped my dad from finding a new wife...
Dad spent most of my childhood travelling the realm or warring.
When I got older my dad was sure to visit me only when I disappointed him. It was not my fault the marshal was a horrible teacher! But I am fine with all that. Dad's dead and I am a gruff diplomat. It is what it is.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've inherited a realm reaching from Italy to the Black Sea.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I spent the last year in Constantia and Karvuna- perhaps I will finally be able to visit Padua or Karnten. Apparently my dad spent a lot of time at a summer palace in Karnten.
The realm is profitable, but running at 65% efficiency. I've inherited my dad's court, supplementing the small one I kept in Karvuna.
My dead brother's wife's son is now my vassal
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The court says he served my dad faithfully in war and should prove to be an important ally.
I have twelve siblings... Only six live today.
Lazaros, my brother, is next in line to inherit.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is only 12.
Time to get to work...

I send Lazaros to Naissus as a fosterling
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Vysheslav is somewhat disloyal after my dad's death. I will try to strengthen our relations by sending him my brother.

I send Kaloyan, 11, as a fosterling to the Duchy of Bosnia
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Visarion Draskovic, the Duke of Bosnia, was my dad's friend
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hopefully I can strengthen our diplomatic ties.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It has been nearly two months, but I finally have realm related issues to deal with
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I order a training-grounds to be built in Constantia. I know the province could use better military positioning.

Theophano gave birth to a healthy baby girl!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I need to prove myself as the rightful leader of the Principality. I have a plan to do just that! The province north of Consantia is Galaz.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My clerks say Galaz is where my step mother came from, it was also once a part of the Principality of Karvuna. I am going to retake Galaz from the Muslim occupier, Baybars of Tilis
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This will increase my (poor) standing with the church, show me as an honorable man by freeing my stepmother's land, a capable military leader, and a good diplomat when I make peace with Baybar's liege, Danismend Dulo
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Taking Galaz will be my path to respect! In due time... in due time... First I will spend a couple of months saving money to fund the war.

Excellent
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I believe Irina was behind the plot. She is a capable spy master and my plan to free her home province probably inspired her to support me. Vysheslav is now extremely loyal to me.

1128
The year is starting off well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Karnten is prosperous and growing.
I am healthy and well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It is time to act. The treasury is full of gold and the realm is full of capable men.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I raise a regiment in Belgrade and head for Severin.

My marshal, Onorios, joins me in Severin with a regiment of his own
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We continue together to Turnu.

A library is completed in Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The next construction project can wait for my war to be over.

Damned peasants!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
How dare they revolt!

Onorios and I put down the rabble easily enough
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I also receive news that the bishop has died. I have no one to replace him.

The Duke of Movaria expressed his desire to form an alliance
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His lands are few but powerful,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is rather young too... I accept.

We arrive in Consantia
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I declare war on the Beydom of Galaz- my glorious future starts now
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Emirate of Volga Bulgaria declares war on me in his vassal's support.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They are far from my realm and should be little threat.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We begin marching north.

We engage the enemy in Galaz
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They are few and weak! Nothing can go wrong!

 :o
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Just as the fight was coming to an end I took a ... wound :-[
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am severely wounded, and my... ermmm, loins are a little less enthusiastic, if you get what I mean.

But victory is ours
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now to siege the province.

We take Galaz
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Baybars makes a feeble offer of peace. I decline.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and send a new offer of my own; give me 48 gold and install me as count.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Mission accomplished!
Now I offer a white peace to Volga Bulgaria
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and wait for a response. I disband our regiments to save money.

The training ground I sponsored in Constantia is complete
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I take a couple of days off of touring my new province, Galaz, to visit the new training grounds to the south.

 :(
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Emir of Volga Bulgaria has declined my peace proposal. I will wait a bit...
and resume provincial improvement constructions
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
starting with a Royal Post in Karvuna.

I will honor myself for my military exploits by declaring myself Prince of Karvuna
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now no one can claim I just play with my dad's titles- I've earned this title.

A church has been built in Severin
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
maybe it will help end the revolt there.

My clerks brought me some interesting international news today
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Deja vu

All of the pressure of ruling the realm by myself is bearing down on me
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am stressed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I look forward to my brothers aging to 16 years. Then maybe they will help alleviate the stress by taking some provinces off my hands.

Small pox has hit Karnten
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My wound has been bothering me, so it is not like I had plans to visit there anyways.

There is a new Pope
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can't believe my dad actually warred the Pope once...

1129
It is a new year
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The realm is silently at war and running at poor efficiency.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My wound hurts and does little to help me stay calm with all the duties involved in ruling a Principality.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I send another offer of peace to the Emirate of Volga Bulgaria

Dobroslava thinks prestige and skills should be rewarded
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She is a very capable chancellor, yes, but she holds little sway over me. My wife is a fine diplomat herself and with Nephon dead I hold not real relation to Dobroslava...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
But to be just, I must admit that everybody earns his/her due, no less, no more.
I pay my courtier fairly
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's fair and square.

The Emir of Volga Bulgaria declined my peace proposal, again
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Onorios suggests we march north, but I am hoping to end this cold war peacefully and cheaply.

There was no convincing the court- they are set on war
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I mobilize regiments across the main realm. Being wounded, I leave the army under Onorios's command.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They march for Galaz- with plans to continue north to engage the enemy and hopefully win battle(s) which will in turn make peace more convincing to the enemy.

7770 men gather in Galaz
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
then march on north, towards Smolensk
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
To victory!

Back in Belgrade I thankfully discover my wounds have not left me infertile
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Theophano is expecting another child.

This is why I did not want to propagate the war!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Why could my court not follow my lead?! Why did I let them convince me to send Onorios north?!!?

While my army marches to war I am left with domestic issues to take care of
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I accept Burgher demands that peasants in Consantia be forbidden to sell good within the city walls. That is the job of the Burghers.

The popular revolt in Severin has shows signs of compromise
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I give in to the demands, at a cost of 30 prestige. I cannot have unrest in the realm while trying to focus on war abroad...

Of the 7770 men that departed Galaz, 6476 have arrived at the enemy's doorstep
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Emirate of Volga Bulgaria has an initial force of 3309 garrisoned in Smolensk.

While receiving a report that Onorios has engaged the enemy in battle, a courtier has informed me that Karnten is in revolt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That is most unfortunate.

My army in the north is victorious
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Onorios will siege and try to take the province- then I can renegotiate peace.

Karnten is plagued with small pox and revolt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am forgiving and give in to their demands. I will not have domestic unrest!

Onorios reports Smolensk is under our control
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My army has seen no enemy opposition since the initial battle- and even that army has retreated north
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
As such, my court has convinced me to let Onorios' campaign continue to further establish an upper hand against the enemy. If we can take another province before negotiating peace we may be able to walk away from the negotiating table with gains, not just a white peace!
Regarding domestic issues: I am sending a proposal of marriage between my niece Kyra and Koneg de Gael, the marshal of my ally
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I want good relations with my ally while half of the realm's manpower is off fighting in the north.

War fatigue is affecting the realm
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's too bad. it would cost me nearly 600 gold to attempt to do anything about it. The realm suffers a stability drop to -1.

My ally has accepted the marriage of his marshal and my niece
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My army continues campaigning in the north.

Onorios reports Moskva is under our control
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Still no sign of further enemy resistance beyond passive provincial defense. Volga Bulgaria is involved in other wars, so perhaps all their armies are busy or destroyed?
I have given Onorios permission to continue his campaign... should the enemy make a show I will initiate peace proceedings

Dobroslava wants further rewards
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I rebuff such an outrageous demand! We are broke! She takes it well, though, and remains my chancellor. I think she knows I can just replace her with my only slightly less skilled wife.

1130
My new year celebration has been made better with news that Onorios has taken Pereyaslavl Zalesky
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He has suggested splitting his force to take more passively defended land faster
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I grant him permission.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The realm is secure but broke.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My wound still pesters me, and the constant worry of war and domestic revolt has kept me stressed...

Belgrade is suffering from a lack of capable field hands
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Every war has its price. The men will be back soon to help gather harvests. Once this war ends.

Theophano gave birth to another baby girl
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
she will be named Beronike

My wound is aggravating and painful
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've fallen ill.

I spend most of my time in bed, in pain... But I still receive news of the realm and my army to the north
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Onorios has taken Rostov.

Uglich was captured by the Turnu regiment
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The way things are looking, I may soon be known as 'The Northern Conquerer'

Vladimir fell to Onorios as well
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He reports no enemy contact. The army is marching on. I have been deferring most of my duties to the court recently, due to my illness- but today the court warned me that Volga Bulgaria may have an army readied in their capital. Wincing at the pain in my groin, I assured them I would consider offering a peace before reaching Silyar. Perhaps after taking their second to last province, Ryazan- which Onorios is en route to at the moment.

Theophano tells me she sent our daughter Anastaso to be raised by a local noble
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She says Anastaso was too sneaky and she wants her to be more diplomatic, like her mother.

I have barely the strength to move any more. My body is weak and tired... when a zealous firebrand started preaching rebellion I had no tolerance of it
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am not known for my standing with the church as is- the last thing I need is some firebrand preacher trying to raise Severin against me.

Revolts are widespread, now
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That is most unfortunate... I swear, once I am feeling better I will shut them down.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

That was... short. Looks like all of Nikephoros' children are doomed to death. Also, if you end up with all that land from the north, I have no idea how they will be managed.

Holy shit, I just became the Byzantine Emperor due to a funny succession law (elective, I think). I also inherited all the wars my predecessor has been undertaking, and am about to run into debt. I also have 17 areas under my control, but I can only handle 8. While I'm at it, three of my vassals are unhappy at me changing laws so that my son inherits. I am soooo gonna fall into debt.

byzantium gives problems. I prefer being king of rus with 30000 prestige and 50 vassals :)
when my son will inherit, it will be a mess if they decide to start revolting... I just hope my steward will still be alive at that time. I can raise more than 100000 soldiers from my provinces alone.
king of rus and norway ( was allied to denmark. denmark asked me to help against norway. I decided I could go the full way and claim the title) and soon king of mann and the islands ( I am waiting for the son to inherit. an early prestige bonus is always welcome.
duke of many, liege of much more, claims on count of georgia ( as soon as alliance ends I'll jump on it) and , hopefully, soon liege of prince of vitebsk. Unluckily, I'll have to cut through the whole turkey to get to baghdad and mecca... why would he have lands tehre anyway?

I had a lucky game.

Goron, good luck iwth heirs because it seem it is not going well, at all.

That was... short.
No kidding huh?!
He only saw three years as Prince, and not even full years...

Looks like all of Nikephoros' children are doomed to death.
:-\ :( :'(
I fear you may be right.
I also find it amusing that I jokingly had Nikephoros mistake Maximos for Sabas in his old age- and then both died in the same way! Severe wound in battle followed by illness followed by early death.
Also, if you end up with all that land from the north, I have no idea how they will be managed.
Yeah... I have several options...
Either right as, or right before Maximos died, Lazaros came of age. I am very happy about that, because had he not, I may have role-played his court as dividing the land up amongst themselves. But, even with him of age I may still end up doing that, but under his own direction. He is going to need to realize that the realm is too large for the ruling style his dad and brother followed.
I may have him change the laws to Feudal Contract and give titles to his courtiers. Feudal Contract will help keep them happy, much more so than Royal Prerogative. I may even spin off a Prince title... maybe grant Vysheslav one, or possibly Onorios... while it would fracture the realm, I could consider it like cutting out some fat.
It is no wonder Maximos became stressed, he had way more provinces under his control than he could ever imagine to efficiently handle.

Thats Byzantium for you...good luck with the law change:-) you may have been better off just trying to get as many titles in your dynasty's heirs' hands and leaving the laws as they were. That way, when you die you have a chance your kid will again be elected Emperor and even if not you still have security of holdings within the empire as vassals.

I had a lucky game.
Say that when your leader dies... I have a feeling your luck may come crashing down when your vassals find themselves under a new ruler- then again maybe not.

and, what year is it?
I have one word: Mongols

Goron, good luck iwth heirs because it seem it is not going well, at all.
yeah, 13 kids survive birth, 6 (i think) live now... of the boys, 6 survive birth, 2 live now...
and not one boy has succeeded in making a son

It seems Nikephoros' virility and fertility was a one hit wonder in the dynasty DNA.

On the bright side if you have all that land, you could probably easily take Rashka. Split the northern land among your vassals to reduce the demense penalty moblise everyone and trash Rashka, become King of Serbia and if your northern lands break off, who cares?

*wink wink*
Yep...

That King title is really valuable right now...
The only problem is the title Prince of Rashka is like 750 prestige, and each of the count titles are well over 200, if not 300 each. So no matter what, to get the 66% holding needed to create the title, I'm going to need a lot of prestige.
And, theres little hope of just creating a king titles out of my new holdings to the north- Rus is like a 5 million province big kingdom... 66% of 5 million is big.

Ignore the prince titles, if you just take his land and his sisters land then he'll dissapear and you can create this titles at a later date should you feel the need.

Gron, it seem problems started before the old ruler dies. the few norway counties I have as vassals tried to spark a civil war... which means that I'll see some revolts at home, in Russia. shouldn't be a big problem, since a province of my realm usually gives 10000 to 20000 soldiers, and I'll still have plenty of loyal vassals ( which I can also bribe with gifts, since my income is above 200)

but... mongols? they will hurt. mongols will hurt a lot.
Time to use the prestige to claim all king and prince titles in europe! that way wherever I'll be, I'll have room for expansion.

Also, take rashka as soon as possible! you need that title.
and to get rus you need 35-40 provinces of the list... that is a lot. I don't suggest it.

The Dynasty Continues!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This morning I received news that my brother died.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I know he was very ill after suffering a wound during battle. I was just preparing for my coming of age party when Theophano came to me. She was hysterical. Maximos died and she had no clue what would come of her- she feared that the realm would be torn apart or collapse or be taken by enemies. I know she was sitting in at court in Maximos' place the last couple of weeks- perhaps some of the courtiers have been openly discussing contingencies should my brother pass.
No matter. I am Prince now
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We held an emergency court session shortly after my brother's death. The court named me Prince and immediately briefed me on the realm.
It would seem Vysheslav Rurikovich is rather disloyal right now
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The court assures me that while it is a matter of concern, it is not a matter of great concern. The man is reliable and capable and owes almost everything he has to my family. They say the transition of power may have created concern on his end.
The court was also sure to brief me on Onorios' war
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My marshal has 4218 men sieging Ryazan. He has encountered no active enemy resistance since an initial battle when they arrived in Smolensk just under one full year ago. Despite the relatively easy campaign, attrition has dropped his force from 7770 to 4218. The court is fully behind the war and eagerly suggest I authorize Onorios to march on to the enemy capital after taking Ryazan. Once we return to peace we will focus on recovering our treasury, currently sitting at 511 owed.

I must look to my own needs in addition to those of the realm. I need a wife.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bean-Alban Mac Gilla Patriac, a Gaelic Catholic daughter of the marshal of Osraige, catches my fancy. She is not of a wealthy or powerful family, but being the first Synadenos to choose my own bride, I couldn't care less. I send my proposal to the Count of Osraige.

The Duke of Moravia wants an alliance
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I accept. While he is not extremely powerful, he is better than nothing.

Onorios sends word he has taken Ryazan
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In his message he also requested I grant permission for him to march on Bilyar, the Volga Bulgaria capital
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I send him instructions to do so. We will end this war decisively.

My marriage proposal has been accepted!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I decline the meager duty of 0.69gold, gaining 6 prestige.

A claim holder of the enemy desires to join my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will grant him permission
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is an older man, and Turkish Muslim at that. His claim is for Vladimir, a province I control now.

Despite my ruling for almost three months now I have only just been given leave from my education
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now I can focus the entirety of my energy and time to ruling the realm.

Most court sessions involve some ruling involving taxation rights or merchant rights or noble rights
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
today I have ruled that the clergy should be given the right to collect extra taxes, no, excuse me, they call them 'tithes', on free peasants in Severin.

We have received word that Osnorios is almost to the Emirate of Volga Bulgaria's capital
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
His scouts report that nearly 5000 enemy garrison the province. I would not take on the enemy, but Osnorios is adamant about finishing what he has started. He is confident. He says the regiment lacks proper command. I am not so certain. Osnorios seems to forget he only has 3493 men in his army right now... Should he fail in battle I will immediately open peace negotiations with the enemy.

Today Osnorios engaged in the first battles with the Bilyar regiment...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've got a bad feeling about this... should he lose we risk losing all of our gains so far. It would take too long to get a reinforcement army up there to stop the enemy from recapturing provinces...

Elias, a courtier leading a regiment under Osnorios, has been hurt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It will leave a mark, but the message says he has suffered no negative physical trait

A day of wonderful news!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
First it seems the enemy in Bilyar is on the verge of retreat! Next, Bean-Alban tells me she is with child!

Osnorios has defeated the enemy
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I must admit I had my doubts... Now all he need do is siege the province

Near complete and utter victory over Volga Bulgaria has been achieved!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Bilyar is under our control, leaving the enemy with no directly controlled provinces.
I have Osnorios dispatch peace demands
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'm taking it all
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Behold!

After much thought I have decided what course to take the ruler-ship of my new provinces
For starters, I make Onorios the Bishop of Uglich and Pereyaslavl Zalessky
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Onorios served me and my brother well in this war, so he deserves recognition and gain.
Next, I grant Elias the titles Count of Smolensk and Count of Moskva
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He fought for me, and even suffered a potentially disfiguring blow in battle.
I must also recognize that my dad's vision of the Principality being a family run business is impossible. My brothers are dead, except for Kaloyan. We cannot rule the realm by ourselves... Royal Prerogative is not the best choice for the realm... I examine the options
Spoiler: Regal Prerogative (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Feudal Contract (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Traditional Custom (click to show/hide)
and change the Principalities laws to Feudal Contract. This will help keep my new vassals happy.
I appoint a new Marshal
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He is not the best in the world, but he is the best in my realm... He'll just have to do.

Constantia is in revolt
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is most unfortunate... The realm's debt, lack of stability, laws (which also regulate minimum taxes) are all bearing down on the small folk. Once the treasury recovers from the costs of war I will be able to build more provincial improvements to help make the people happy in troubled areas...

-140... I wish I had that with my full army raised. Unluckily it is more like -400-500. Maybe more, I don't think I have ever needed it all recently. And that is with a normal income of nearly 300 ( scutage included).

Now I owuld suggest to make some heirs quickly and then go around in the north conquering some more pagan land to increase the size of your realm. Try to make vassals when possible, since it gives no reputation hits and there will be less problems about religious revolts.
Now, you are going to enter into the big game, and you will have a growing number of vassals.  I suggest working on a kingdom title as soon as possible because that will allow you to directly control more provinces. You should always be much more powerful than what your vassals can take. If you can't take any of your vassals down without much of a fight, then you are in danger.

that was not my full army, actually...
The initial 7770 men raised was only a little over 1/3 my manpower. I rarely mobilize my entire army for financial and security reasons. When the war started I was not sure if I'd be seeing an army coming at me while I sent mine at them, so I left a good bit at home to act as active defense if necessary. Also, we all know how other states like to declare war on you when you are engaged in war already, so I wanted to keep extra men back home to defend against other potential threats. It was never my intention to take over those provinces, I just wanted galaz... but when Volga Bulgaria wouldn't make peace I was forced to send an expeditionary force to engage the enemy and win some battles to make them think twice about continuing the war...

I've actually played about 7 years more than that update- but without giving away what actually happened, Ill say what my plans/thoughts were...
I have no desire to conquer more pagan/muslim lands. I'm already broke as is and it will take me some time to get out of debt... add in the fact that my reputation is tarnished and the realm is at -1 stability and we have a long road of waiting ahead of us. Oh, and I'm way beyond my demesne control limit already too... so to add in more land is counter productive- it will only make things worse.
Making vassals is good idea, yes, but my court is bare. Also, granting titles actually gives a bonus to your reputation so trust me when I say I wish I had courtiers to vassalize.
I plan on getting myself stabilized and well regarded in the noble community before I act out again... this way I don't need to worry about my vassal's strengths. I keep them happy so I care not how strong they are. I'm in no danger by having strong vassals- in fact I prefer when my vassals are strong because they are less likely to get messed up by other states and then I spend less time worsening my reputation. I am pretty sure Onorios can raise more men in his two provinces than I can in my entire Belgrade cluster combined!
