Whats an effective way to increase your army's size? As a Duke owning around 6-7 provinces, 3 of them being given to my sons, my total army size is just about 2.800 men, anything I'm doing wrong?

there is something that is keeping your income low.
More money you get from a province, bigger the army you get from it.

if you have 6-7 provinces, then to get 2800 men they should have a lower than 1 income... maybe revolts and other negative effects... ?
maybe your king is a poor steward and you have no steward in the court?

I get less then 1 gold per province really. They're just basic provinces with few contructions, but seriously, at least 3 of them have the rich status.

My stewardship does suck though, so I wonder.

November 26, 1104
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I build a sawmill in Belgrade. Tax revenues are high, and a sawmill will only increase them (by 5%, to be exact).

The year closes peacefully while I recoup from the past war and allow my manpower to build up. At the moment I've got 5711 men available. That number grows every month.

1105
A new year!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems some catholic lord made the pope happy, bringing the crusade to an end. Whatever.
My reputation is still slightly tarnished and my sons are still without sons.

Ide went into labor and the midwife emerged to declare the child a girl.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We name her Theodote.

On the international front, it seems my deceased sister's son is the King of Hungary
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That makes me the King of Hungary's uncle. Our relation is poor regardless.

My daughter Theodora's husband's dad is in toruble
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seem King Bela Arpady was not happy when he tried to leave the kingdom. I guess the chances of my daughter being a Duchess are slim. Luckily the Count of Csanad (my daughter's husband) is not involved in the war- so she should be safe...

Maximos, my diocese Bishop has passed.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He lived to the ripe age of 64. Sadly I have no one to replace him.

Olvia, once a mighty foe, now a simple pawn entangled in a war with Pereyaslavl.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At the moment they are weak. I feel son may be the time to strike and enact some revenge for the death of my son. I hold the Penechegs responsible for Sabas' death. He suffered a mortal wound, ultimately resulting in an early demise during war with them.
In Spring. I will war them when spring comes. In the meantime I will save my tax revenues and continue building my manpower...

Excellent. Nephon's wife is with child
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I hope to have a grandson. The runt, Dorotheos is still childless.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He needs to get over his depression and start making babies. Perhaps the making babies part should come first, surely that will make him happier.

I receive some... troubling news from the north.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Pechenegs have captured Pereyaslavl. Now they can devote their full force to the defense of their vassal, the Chiefdom of Olvia...

I have the opportunity to invite a bishop to my court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We've been without a proper diocese bishop for many months. I accept him in my court and appoint him the realm's diocese bishop.

1106
A fresh new year.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My reputation has recovered and I am still earning a healthy 16 gold every month. The realm's manpower has grown to over 7300, and my treasury is bloated at 237.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am blessed with good health despite my age. I am still without grandson(s). Nephone's wife gave birth to another daughter,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and Dorotheos is still without child.
Olvia is recovering from war, and with the potential support of their liege, the cheifdom may be able to muster 6961 men. My manpower sits at 7339. I will see how things look come spring.

Progress in Belgrade!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My clerks report that the sawmill is complete. I could fund another project, but I decide to hold off until the decision to wage or abandon war with Olvia is certain.

Spring has arrived.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've gathered all of the intelligence I have available about Olvia and the Pechenegs.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They can muster around 7100 men. I can raise an army of 7500.
The chief of Olvia has a formidable combined martial skill of 19
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The High Chief of Pechenegs has an impressively amazing combined martial skill of 27
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My combined martial skill is 19.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After much deliberation with my court and marshal I decide to call of plans for war.
The sides are too close.

With the war plans abandoned I have reconsidered my provincial improvement spending.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We will build a glass-works in Belgrade.

My youngest, Theodote, will be raised by nannies.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

1107
Another year has gone, and another year has come.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Our realm has been at peace for what, 4 years now?
The realm is strong and our treasury is bursting with gold. I can muster a strong army of over 7800. I am well, my sons are healthy enough (Dorotheos's depression is a little ... depressing.) but I am still without a grandson.

My ally, the Duchy of Toscana has been attacked.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will go to war in her support. The Bishopric of Firenze is weak and small. I do not plan on even bothering to raise my armies.

The glassworks is completed in Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I will wait to build my next provincial improvement. I have great things in mind.

Now that my treasury has surpassed 500 gold coins, I will devote them to the construction of a small castle in Belgrade.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It will take 29 months to build but shall be a glorious achievement as well as a sound defensive investment.
Oh, and on a side note, that war with Firenze ended swiftly several months back. My ally destroyed them.

And speaking of my ally...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Duchess of Toscana is the new papal controller. This is the first time since Geza's control that I've cared who it was. I think I can rest soundly knowing no religious wars will be declare don me by the catholics.

1108
I feel like it was the turn of the century just yesterday...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is hard to believe 8 years have already passed in the 1100's.
I am still without a grandson. I may soon offer a gold reward for the first of my sons to spawn a male heir...

Ahh! I've been attacked!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
No, not the realm, but me personally! I managed to make it through the ordeal without wound or injury, but I have startling evidence to suggest that my wife was somehow involved in the plot!
This is the last back stab (literally, in this case) I will let her perform. I remove her as my spy master and replace her with an unfortunately poor substitute. But, I'll take a weaker spy master than a rival wife as a spy master any day.

Eirene is 5.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She will study at the court.

That whore!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This is how she gets back at me for removing her as spy master huh?
Whats so special about this Silvester guy. huh?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'll exile him, that'll teach her.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

We have an odd relationship...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A new pope.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

(I have 1109-1111 played already... I probably won't write them up until tomorrow cuz I must get ready for a new years party... but, as a little taster I will write two words: "War" and "Boy". )

Add treacherous, backstabbing, and traitorous and you describe Ide well...
I considered sending an assassin after her, but, the fact she has provided me like 3 kids even while 'losing' claims, sending assassins, and cheating on me, I figure I will tolerate her:-)

I like to think that Nikephoros is just forcing himself on her in retaliation for her actions.... Cuz I just can't believe we'd be stupid enough to put our guard down anywhere near her...
I will try and get the next update written up soon today.

1108 closes up quietly without event.

1109
I welcome the new year.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A healthy treasury, good standing among my peers, a respectable reputation, levies numbering above 8200, and personal health all make the arrival of 1109 smooth.

Do we all remember our old liege, Romanos Karandenos?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He's dead.
His son, Eutyches, took the Principality in '06 at the ripe age of 12.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With my treacherous wife no longer my spy master, I feel comfortable dealing with claims again.
I have decided, against some councilors advice, to finish off the Karandenos dynasty.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I claim the title Count of Naissus.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Synadenos dynasty will eliminate all traces of our former vassalation under the Karandenos family.
I have 8269 men at my disposal throughout my realm. The boy Prince Eutyches has a meager 1681 men available.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I declare war.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I raise regiments in the provinces under my direct control- leaving my son's troops alone. My 6780 men will be plenty enough to finish this job. We muster in Vidin for a pre-battle feast at my son's court
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I'd like to think I've waited so long to do this in respect of Romanos. He was my childhood playmate and friend after all... He was fostered in my dad's court and then in mine for two years before he took his father's title.

But his boy shares no personal ties to me. And I gladly march to engage him
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A little warring will be good to keep my professional soldiers sharp and practiced. It will also hopefully build experience in my raw levies.

While leading my army to Naissus I receive some international news
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I seems Byzantium is marching through Severin, en route to Poland. Byzantium and Poland are at war. The conflict does not affect me much at all, but is interesting regardless.

Just days before arriving at Eutyches' stronghold I receive personal news form the home front.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ide gave birth to another daughter. She will be named Milica.

Battle.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Victory.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It was a slaughter. I lost barely over 200 men. The enemy marshal lost over 1500... I almost feel guilty.

Only a day after our victory, I learn that a famine has struck Turnu
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The land is already rich- at worst the famine would decrease the provincial yield to prosperous... but I try to alleviate is anyways. The cost is minor and it will look good in the eyes of the church.

We've been sieging Naissus' capital for hardly over ten days and Eutyches is already begging for peace.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He offers me 259 gold. I decline. I'll have that gold one way or another. His father and grandfather embarrassed my dad and I one time too many for me to be lenient now.

The siege is over.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
We've taken Naissus and captured Eutyches and his court.
I demand he concede the title Count of Naissus to me as well as 287 gold (his entire treasury)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He has no choice but to accept:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
With Eutyches out of the way, I make myself the Prince of Vidin.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My actions have grown our realm, but tarnished my reputation, again.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am also ruling at 90% efficiency. The war was not very costly and the peace treaty was generously rewarding. Even after spending 100 gold to create the title Prince of Vidin, I have plenty of wealth left for provincial improvements.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I initiate the construction of a tile factory in Vidin.

Mere days after arriving back in Belgrade I get Ide with child
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At this point I've lost count of the number of daughters she has borne me.

Belgrade has been blessed by a new ore vein
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Times are good.

The year closes with a positive note
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I learn that the smugglers ring that was present in Naissus prior to my capture of the province has been broken up. This is evidence that the province is better off under my rule.

1110
I've ruled Belgrade for nearly 35 years now...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I can feel that time bearing down on me...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I am no longer a young man... I'm actually quite old. My dad lived to be 64. Should I match him I have only 13 years left in me... and by the time he passed he was quite slow and weak... I hope to remain strong and healthy... I hope.

During an argument with my wife-she declared me too old and decrepit to be a proper man for her- I announced I was still able to keep up with the youths and somehow got talked in to a hunting trip with a neighboring count no older than 20 years
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
While I did make a new friend of the count, I must admit I am not 20 anymore and hunting is much easier to leave to the huntsmen (or younger lords) than myself... But I'll never admit as much to my wife.

Wonderful news!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Most wonderful news indeed! I have spawned another son!
Why wait for grandchildren when I can just keep having Ide pop the little brats out? Nephon seems to have given up after two daughters and Dorotheos is turning out to be a failure at life! While Nephon will still take my titles when I pass, I have a feeling little Maximos might be the next to inherit after him...

The small castle is completed in Belgrade
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It is a magnificent structure- both impressive in appearance and in defensive capabilities.
With plenty of wealth in the treasury, I continue the local improvement initiative and build a Royal Post
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It will cut down on the negative modifiers for having so many provinces in my demesne.

A sad day in Belgrade
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
My marshal Janko Kruzic de Clissa has passed. He was only 53. He was beatified.

Theodote is 5
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I send her to be trained at the court.

The tile-factory is completed in Naissus
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I send orders for the construction of a sawmill.

1110 comes to a close without event.

Could be one of those marriages where they do everything they are "supposed to" in public and around each other but behind the scenes do everything they can to hurt one another.
Thats a really good explanation!

On a complete (kind of) off topic side note I have a suggested reading list:
At the moment I am reading the Arthurian trilogy by Bernard Cornwell (known most for his Sharpe books). They are good. I just finished the second book, Enemy of God, today. I plan to buy the third tomorrow. The trilogy starts with The Winter King.
It is about Arthurian Britain- but written as historical fiction, a genre I really enjoy.

Another book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, starting with A Game of Thrones by George RR Martin is suggested by me. It reminds me of CK's dynasties in a slightly more fantastical world. I have read all the books and eagerly await the next one. I actually read the entire WoT series
(up to but not including A Memory of Light) as a distraction while waiting for the next Ice and Fire book... but that was... years ago. I still eagerly await the book:-) A Dance with Dragons better be good:-)

If anyone else has any historical fiction (medieval/similar) books that you think are good, let me know. Once I finish up Cornwell's Arthur trilogy I'll probably try out his Saxon Trilogy then I'll need something else...
